director residential services shift has been added to the regular day and evening shifts also the student residence security staff now has two teams patroling from 9 p.m to 1 a.m on weekdays and until 2 a.m on the weekends the offices of residential services and residential life are pleased with the success of the system the stu see business page 4 by erica crespi brown and white asst news editor a new electronic security system was installed over the summer in the centennial ii dormitories david jos eph director of residential services said the installment is part of a legal settlement with the family of a student who was killed at lehigh in 1986 joseph said the pilot system requires each student to use an electronically coded access card which the resident must slide through a computer controlled reader if the code read from the card is matched in the computer's memory the electrom agnet which holds the door closed is released and entry is granted the student has less than 10 seconds to enter the building joseph said the cards are needed for the external entrances which have been reduced from two to only one per house each card is exclusive to one entrance door regular keys and locks are used for the internal doors and each room in the building once insert ing the card another feature to this system is its ability to eliminate door propping joseph said if the door is left open for more than 20 seconds an alarm is sounded throughout the building sig naling students that a door has been propped this alarm puts the respon b & w photo by marshal vjllarosh lehigh freshmen hurry to classes while they still can enjoy them asbestos removed from u.c alpha sigma phi frat house falasca said the empty house provided a good oppor tunity for the university to relocate alpha sig without disrupting their living style too much falasca said the alpha sig brothers were given the option to move back into their house after lehigh layfayette weekend but they decided to stay in alpha chi rho's former house for the semester he said the asbestos removal should be completed by the end of octo ber and then the process of restoration can begin with new ceiling and floor tiles the asbestos removal must be done by a licensed profes sional contractor k&k insula tion is doing the removal at alpha sig asbestos was used as a fir eproofing and insulating mat erial in products such as ceil ing tile floor tile insulation bricks and cement falasca said asbestos is present in see asbestos page 6 there was damage to asbestos products in the living areas of the fraternity house the members of the house are temporarily living in the form er house of alpha chi rho fraternity which was disband ed during the summer alpha chi rho which had been on campus since 1917 was closed by its national organization the fraternity was having problems filling the house with members and was experiencing escalating costs which had to be paid by the alumni the chapter will be allowed to recolonize in the fall of 1992 jim spence national execu tive director of the fraternity said the chapter wasn't meeting our expectations pro gramming-wise or grade wise by robyn suriano brown and white news editor asbestos was removed from the basement of the univers ity center during the summer and is currently being remov ed from alpha sigma phi frat ernity richard freeman director of environmental health and planning explained the asbestos was removed from the u.c because lehigh need ed to do work in the basement freeman said the asbestos did not pose a hazard before it was removed because if wasn't exposed to air director of physical plan ning gary falasca said we knew there was material pres ent in the ceilings in the base ment he said the university had conducted a survey of the buildings on campus to determine where there was asbestos falasca explained the pur pose of the survey was to alert the university to buildings which require inspection for asbestos exposure every year the university inspects all buildings where asbestos has been installed and checks for problems asbestos only poses a hazard if it is exposed to air where it is releasing fibers falasca said freeman said if the asbest os present in the building is in good condition and not releas ing fibers it is better not to remove it freeman said removal is usually motivated by construction freeman explained the uni versity decided to remove the asbestos from alpha sig after an inspection showed that inside news sigma chi's lehigh chapter has been dissolved following an investigation into a complaint that a woman hired to do a striptease there last spring was raped page 9 arts & leisure a group of lehigh students enjoyed their summer field trip to the rocky mountains where they roughed it and studied the geology of that region page 18 sports taylor gym was closed for an interior facelift in august and athletic officials hope students will suggest ways it can better serve them page 23
