see sagan page 5 astronomer carl sagan will deliver the 1990 commencement address on june 2 announced lehigh president peter likins and senior class presi dent rich verma sagan who is the david duncan professor of astronomy and space sciences and director of laboratory and planetary studies at cornell uni versity will receive an honorary doc tor of science degree from lehigh during the ceremonies in stabler athletic and convocation center we're very happy with this year's speaker said verma he is well respected in academic circles and also popular with students according to verma sagan was chosen as one of the top 20 academic entertainment and sports personalit ies preferred by the class of 1990 to speak at the ceremony as indicated through a survey given to seniors last year although television personality david letterman topped the list ver ma said he was not able to attend sagan who was also high on the list was contacted in late december and was more than happy to accept the associate editor alpha chi omega and delta zeta sororities will move onto the hill this summer in a three-year temporary housing agreement with the univers ity alpha chi and dz will occupy the buildings previously housing sigma chi and alpha chi rho fraternities respectively both alpha chi and dz were colon ized at lehigh in the fall of 1988 and are are currently housed in hartman and gipson colleges in saucon village sigma chi and crow which were disbanded this year will be guarante see sororities page 4 campus the sorority was considering mov ing into hillside house which is no longer affiliated with the university according to kauper dz got upset because they didn't want to be the only house out here in saucon village and the school got upset because they wanted us to be out here she said according to hyde the administra tion heard via the grapevine that there was some discontent over saucon village we saw it as an campus hyde said alpha chi vice president of pledge education christa mcclintock 91 said originally when sigma chi and crow were kicked off our chap ter advisor asked if we could live in the vacant houses and the university turned us down fiat and said that would never happen our housing situation was a real problem within our house alpha chi house manager alex kauper said it created a lot of controversy with people who wanted to live off campus we were worried about rush so we started looking for housing closer to ed the option to recolonize at lehigh in three years and providing that recolonization is successful the two fraternities will be allowed to reoc cupy their former chapter houses according to dean of students sheila hyde both sororities and the university are very excited about the move this plan provides an attractive temporary housing option for our two newest sororities it also ensures that both houses will be occupied and generating revenue during the next three years in order to minimize the deficit when the fraternities return to russian gold medalist joins wrestling staff will help to strengthen our apprecia tion for his country's customs and language saidlehigh university pre sident peter likins this will be a wonderful cultural experience for both sergei and our community donald barry co-director of the center for international studies and professor in lehigh's new russian studies major said sergei will be a great benefit towards our general cam pus interest in russian studies he added he has had direct experience that our students would be interested in learning about although soviet athletes have between 1981 and 1987 before retiring following summer olympics in seoul the only year he did not win the world's top freestyle wrestling award was in 1984 when the soviet union boycotted the olympics
