senior mechanical engineering stu dents will present the design projects which they have been working on for almost one year this week fifteen of the projects were present ed yesterday and the remaining ten will be demonstrated on friday in sinclair auditorium room 110 for two credits the students worked throughout the semester in small groups to design certain projects sug gested by representatives from industries last spring junior mechanical engineering students individually proposed and examined the feasibil ity of solutions to a wide variety of engineering projects said professor robert sarubbi assistant chair the brown and white lehigh university tuesday december 5 1989 vol 97 no 22 lehigh loses opportunity for 15 million by nick chini brown and white desk editor lehigh university was to receive 15 million for the development of moun taintop campus through the defense spending bill for 1990 according to michael bolten vice president of development and university relations the provisions in the defense bill which allocated this money to lehigh and another institution in pen nsylvania the university of scranton were eliminated rep steve bartlett of texas acted to remove lehigh's portion of the 61.2 million the pentagon was required to grant the universities for research and construction the grant had been secured for lehigh by rep john murtha of johnstown the grants were eliminated because of controversy surrounding the way in which the universities were added to the bill after it had already been approved by congress these see money page 8 b&w photo by kristen anderson the lehigh university choir under the direction of steven sametz and the lehigh university chamber singers performed christmas vespers sunday in packer memorial chapel see story page 1 1 . stood up very well against the earthquake lv said steel buildings usually hold up very well in earthquakes while concrete or masonite buildings often collapse he also explained modern buildings are better designed to with stand earthquakes this is partially a result of the fact that national build ing codes are constantly upgraded as more and more is learned lv added that concrete or masonite see lu page 2 professor studies building safety area buildings survived the quake while others collapsed lv recently completed two trips to northern california to survey the dam age he is a board member of the applied technology council which is responsible for developing designs and specifications for buildings to withstand earthquakes the applied technology council is a part of the national center for earthquake engineering research which is centered at the state univers ity of new york in buffalo we are gradually winning the war against earthquakes lv said he explained the modern buildings which were properly engineered by joshua feldman brown and white news writer while tens of thousands of people work to rebuild the san francisco and oakland bay area after the earthquake on oct 11 there are others such as lehigh civil engineering pro fessor le-wu lv who studies build ings to determine why certain bay students present engineering projects neo-natal bed demonstrated by adam fenton it strikes in an instant no one knows how or when it is going to happen but it kills more than 8,000 babies a year in the united states it is sudden infant death syndrome sids or crib death two of the mechanical engineering student design presentations focused on the development of the vibro-acoustic bed for sids the bed project was divided into two parts the first group worked on the acoustic or sound component of the bed and the second group worked on the vibration component seesids pages of a chair on which the consumer could easily place slipcovers the idea is that you can have your furni ture match your drapes easily said schreder another group designed a counter see projects page 7 recliner chair which is a mail-order recliner chair that can be assembled easily mike schreder 90 said we designed the frame mechanism and fasteners so you can put the whole thing together with a screwdriver the group will also present a design person of the mechanical engineer ing department groups of the same class now seniors were organized in the fall 1989 for in-depth analysis and design of the best of the proposed project solutions the projects were submit ted by representatives from industry and in some cases by the students themselves he said projects include products used in the medical military and manufactur ing businesses there are a wide variety of projects some highly techni cal and some like we see every day some presentations will actually have prototypes a prototype is not exactly the finished product but an example of what the finished product might be sarubbi said one group designed a knock-down by janette knittel brown and white a&l writer
