an agreement concerning divest ment was not reached between mem bers of the progressive student alli ance psa and three members of the board of trustees who met wednesday to discuss lehigh's role in combatting apartheid although the meeting was viewed by some who attended as beneficial both sides agreed that more interaction must take place members of the board who attended the meeting were edward uhl chairm an of the board of trustees kirk pendleton chairman of the invest ment subcommittee of the finance committee and william hittinger the incoming chairman of the investment subcommittee after the meeting pendleton com mented on the outcome of the discus sion none of us disagreed on the objective of our meeting to discuss the wrongness of apartheid our focus however was to attempt to learn what is the best mechanism for ending apartheid he said though divestiture was discussed extensively pendleton.said the board pointed out other ways of dealing with apartheid in addition to economic and military power he said uhl men tioned the power of education since this is what lehigh does best it is important to concentrate on education primarily the scholarship issue pendleton said by sending south african students back to south africa with a lehigh education they can further help with the collapse of apartheid steve ragland 91 co-chairman of it's obvious that i their minds were made i up that lehigh does not i have a part in divestment that they're not opting for that i option russell nel 1 91 south african student the psa said the board takes too narrow a position we look at the situation with a broader view and see divestment as the best way to cripple the problem hittinger said he felt the meeting was a positive step for the two groups we are trying to solve the problem of how best to deal with apartheid though we spoke a great deal about divestment we wanted to look at other means that will allow lehigh to all eviate or delete the problem of apar theid the scholarship program being a prime example he said according to uhl the psa and the board of trustees agreed that lehigh needs to broaden the subject to include the total issue of apartheid the board and the psa decided that lehigh should organize a group to study the situation in more detail the only formal agreement made was for lehigh to expand its focus beyond divestment which the psa itself has already done anders said anders said the board of trustees believes lehigh should be to expand this issue of apartheid to include not only the scholarships not only divest see trustees page 3 several hundred lehigh stu dents were amazed as two u.s marine corps heliocopters landed yesterday afternoon in front of maginnes hall the copters were flown to the university to help recruit poten tial marine pilots the marines recruit in this way because when a student sees these heliocopters for real and are able to talk to pilots it all be comes more believable said capt joe soto b&w photos by caroline west greeks heed anti-hazing regulations by hope golohaber brown and white a&l writer the greek system has become increas ingly social over the past 50 years however according to lisa hanson greek affairs coordinator and assist ant dean of students there is a definite trend for national fraternities and sororities urging their local chap ters to return to the ideals of their founders hazing is not consistent with these ideals lehigh defines hazing as any action taken or situation created whether on or off campus to produce mental or physical discomfort embarrassment harrassment or rid icule despite societal and university dis approval of hazing there have been violations in past years jeff benner 90 chairman of the interfraternity judiciary committee cited an incident of physical hazing that came to the university's attention last year one of lehigh's fraternities had a scavenger hunt which are only permit ted if certain university procedures are followed according to benner the fraternity gave points for the strang est object and the scavenger hunt got out of hand benner said one of the pledges thought he would win points in this category by stealing something from lafayette college another case of physical hazing was brought to the university's attention see greeks page 11 the brown and white lehigh university friday october 27 1989 group says apartheid study needed vol 97 no 13 bytoddspinello brown and white news writer
