tuesday september 19 1989 army air force cadets run to remember pows is to keep the issue alive said air force cadet corps commander christine gram lich 90 frankenfield stressed that as americans we should feel a kinship towards the pows the ceremony included a roll call of the 118 missing pen nsylvanians in south east asia during which the crowd lit candles in rememberance the cadets also circulated a petition which will be sent to the government of hanoi demanding prisoners of war be returned gramlich said that although hanoi probably wouldn't comply at least that government would know the americans should not for get prisoners of war in times of prosperity emphasized army lt col thomas frankenfield to an opening ceremony crowd of 200 people friday the fourth annual air force rotc vigil run for prisoners of war and soldiers classified as missing in action began and ended at the uni versity center flagpole fri day and saturday the event was held to raise awareness about the plight of american prisoners of war all over the world the purpose pows had not been forgotten a second petition request ing the united states postal service issue a postage stamp with the pow-mia symbol was passed around as well the run began immediately after the opening ceremony the pow flag was carried by teams of three to four air force and army cadets the cadets ran from the uc flag pole across the fourth street bridge around the police sta tion and back again handing the flag to the next team many veterans and civil ians joined in the run keep ing the flag moving for 24 hours the flag even made a half-time appearance at saturday's football game at murray h goodman stadium closing ceremonies were held on saturday in packer chapel which included a speech by edwin pearce a world students to march on dc bytoddspinello brown and white news writer eight busloads of students will leave lehigh's campus the morning of oct 7 to join in a march in washington d.c for homeless people the event's organizers predict this will be the largest march ever on the nation's capital lehigh's involvement in the march highlights the events that the benefit for the homeless organiza tion has planned for the academic year according to mitch schneider who heads one of the biggest homeless shelters in the country over one mil lion people are expected to partic ipate in the march kelly buller a junior who created lehigh's benefit group last year looks foward to stu dent participation buller explained the national budget for affordable housing has dropped from 32 billion to 8 billion people in support of affordable hous ing must band together in order to compete with the business pressures that the government must deal with celebrities who are expected at the march include cher sugar ray len ord lou ferigno and others an inter national soccer tournament will take place and the aids quilt will be displayed at the march one final time sign-up tables for the march will be in the university center for the next three weeks for 20 a seat students can either sign themselves up or sponsor a local homeless person to attend buses leave at 6 a.m and return at midnight at the south side alive festival the group also plans to have an ice cream stand sponsored by carvel all the ice cream will be bought at cost with see homeless page 6 habitat helps build houses by morcine scott brown and white news writer habitat for humanity is a lehigh university organization concerned with the homeless problem that faces our nation and more directly with the estimated 8,500 homeless people in the city of bethlehem according to chaplain hugh l flesher organiza tion supervisor the group's primary purpose is to rehabilitate inner-city housing and turn it back over to the community the newly refurbished houses give many people the opportunity to have permanent homes they could not otherwise afford the renovated homes are relatively cheap and can be financed with low interest
