granted leave to take jobs in war indus try it was announced last week all are employed by the consoli dated vultee aircraft corporation allentown pa two of the men are leaving the arts college they are dr wil liam a mcdonald assistant pro fessor of latin and dr robert f mcnerney assistant professor of romance languages the engineering college is los ing mr paul hessemer instructor in civil engineering he will be employed by the vultee corpora tion as a technical illustrator although these men will be on leave they plan to maintain their residence in bethlehem placement bureau keeps close contact with firms busch thrills mixed crowd twelve hundred culture-hungry lehigh students and bethlehem townspeople packed broughal high school auditorium to the doors last night to hear a brilliant perfor mance of 18th century chamber music by renowned violinist adolf busch and his little symphony not only busch but also his en tire organization of 27 players gave a fine exhibition of musician ship that completely enchanted the large and appreciative audi ence the concert's opening number corelli's concerto grosso seem ed to find the greatest favor prob ably because it gave each section of the ensemble the greatest op portunity to display its talents the familiar em kleine nacht musik by mozart which rang down the curtain was a close sec ond in popular appeal in the three compositions in which he was soloist concerto grosso and bach's e major vio lin concerto and the fourth bran denburg concerto by the same composer busch displayed a tech nique and virtuosity that has made him a leading light in euro pean and american concert halls for the past 25 years the organization demonstrated an understanding of the delicate european music that can only come from a combination of vast experience and a true artistic spirit and the gales of applause that greeted their efforts proved that bethlehem and lehigh are both receptive to and deserving of future cultural benefits tau beta pi taps six engineers larkin speaks on post-war lehigh tau beta pi national honorary engineering society and the en gineers phi beta kappa chose six men at a smoker held last thursday evening in drown hall those men elected were richard 8011 cheme-june 44 frank rob erts ee-june 44 richard hor lacher ce-june 44 fritz yon bergen cheme-oct 44 ira born ep-june 44 and herbert lauter bach cheme-june 44 professor f v larkin mechan ical engineering head was main speaker he delivered an inspir ing talk on post-war lehigh william bloecher em-oct 44 president of the society presided at the meeting tapping yesterday tapping ceremonies were held yesterday noon at the monument in front of williams hall formal invitation will take place the sec ond week in may at a joint ban quet with pi tau sigma honorary mechanical engineering society tau beta pi was founded at le high in 1885 to honor technical students just as phi beta kappa honored men in non-technical studies the lehigh chapter se lects qualified engineering seniors and juniors in the upper ranks of their classes however no juniors were accepted for the organization this semester send gifts to girl friends but un able to obtain them when mr morgan cannot be present to meet arriving interviewers miss stuber handles all the details secretary stuber is also on hand to welcome visiting alumni and seniors who make the placement bureau a campus meeting place miss stu ber also handles all the epitome funds in addition to all the many other services she renders gratis to the university while she holds down her regular secretarial posi tion an example of the friendly at mosphere to be found in the placement bureau is the remark of a visiting business representa tive who said that his visit to the lehigh placement bureau was one of the most pleasant he had ever experienced in any such employ ment service cedar crest chem prof talks on dyes last wednesday evening april 19 dr harold beards professor of chemistry at cedar crest college gave a highly interesting lecture at moravian college on the chem ical and physical processes of dye ing present at the meeting were the chemical and physical societies of lehigh and the science clubs of moravian and muhlenberg col leges after the talk was con cluded refreshments were served debate team meets gettysburg women in its second debate of the sea son last thursday evening le high's team met the women's team of gettysburg college on the ques tion resolved that the united states cooperate in maintaining and establishing a world police force upon the defeat of the axis as in past debates the formal ar guments were followed by a pe riod of informal questions and dis cussion the discussion period fol lowing the recent debates has been instituted to allow the audi ence to present its ideas and re ceive a better understanding of the problem discussed the gettysburg team represent ed by miss ethel sheraw and miss elaine rabe argued the negative side of the question and the le high team was represented by john tuberty arts feb 46 and jack baum ee-feb 46 support ed the affirmative next friday afternoon may 5 at one o'clock the lehigh debate team will play host to its neigh bors the moravian college in a debate to be held in the speech room on the third floor of christ mast-saucon hall the schedule of debate will be shortened so that both the formal arguments and informal discussion will be com pleted in a one-hour period chess club discusses intercollegiate meets at the first recent meeting of the chess club last friday night plans for the future season were discussed because only five men alfred j dinon ee-feb'46 ed win t pieski chem-june 45 robert m treser che june 45 david keese me-j'44 and ralph a evans ep-june 44 were pres ent elections were not held but confidence was expressed that if enough interest is shown intercol legite meet will be arranged with nearby schools geology professors attend academy of science meet professors bradford willard and lawrence whitcomb of the de partment of geology attended the annual meeting of the pennsyl vania academy of science at york on april 7th and bth professor willard read a paper entitled im mature ordovician eur ypterids from pennsyl vania at the annual election professor willard was elected president elect valentines for 82 students friday evening dean wray h congdon sent out 82 valentine greetings to his more unfortunate students these missiles of cheer consisting of friendly warnings to those who are failing are sent to the undergraduates each mid semester despite present draft conditions the students seem to be working harder since the percentage of valentines sent this semester is just half of what it was last term the present 374 students received 82 warnings while last semester 194 valentines were distributed among 457 students in the race among the several curriculas in the university to win the dubious honor of receiving the most valentines the mechanical engneering department with 20 nosed out the chemical and elec trical engineering departments who claim 19 valentines apiece the remaining warnings were dis tributed as follows arts 5 en gineering physics 4 business 3 mining engineering 3 chemistry 3 civil engineering 2 industrial engineering 3 and civil engi neering 1 the most outstanding news from the placement bureau is that there are plenty of jobs but no one to place in them according to mr e r morgan director of placements with the recent draft ruling ordering immediate induction of all physically fit men between 18 and 26 lehigh's placement service has plenty of positions with industries all over the country but no eligible men to fill the many choice jobs in the summer of 1932 lehigh organized the placement service now located in the basement of the alumni building and since that time the services it has ren dered to lehigh alumni seniors and even undergraduates have been of incalculable value a large majority of seniors get their first real job through interviews ar ranged by the placement bureau while alumni seeking new posi tions often make arrangements with the placement service for in terviews even undergraduates seeking part-time employment while in college find useful jobs through the bureau maintains contracts the most important service the placement bureau can render in these days is the maintenance of contacts with prospective employ ers of lehigh men in post-war times nowadays the daily tasks of file-keeping and other routine office duties occupy the time of director morgan and secretary stuber mr e r morgan came to le high as director of placements in the summer of 1935 and in addi tion to this position he has in structed in the mechanical engi neering department since the ar rival of the astp unit in octo contacts alumni in addition to her office duties miss stuber does much to main tain contact with lehigh alumni she has the most accurate alumni files in the university and is now keeping a file of all lehigh men killed in the present conflict to gether with their pictures the many little things she has done for seniors and alumni have endeared her to these men last christmas she purchased and sent over 100 worth of cosmetics and compacts for alumni overseas desiring to town council will hold dinner-dance the town council announced today that a dinner-dance will be held saturday may 6 1944 in the sun inn tickets will go on sale the latter part of this week ac cording to dick 8011 che june 44 and robert treser che june 45 co-chairman of the affair the exact time and price of the record dance will be announced n the near future this is the first dance held by the town organization since last summer but its social activities have been kept alive by a series of suppers held before — the recent house party dances and several stag banquets events such as the above promise to be a major factor in the social life of town men in the future
