committee dis cussed creation of an on-campus non-alcoh olic pub during a meeting thursday the pub an old idea which has resurfaced due to social policy changes would provide students with an alternative to the hill committee chairperson david cohen 88 said the pub would be run as a student organization and would succeed if it received support from the interfraternity panhellenic residence hall and student activity councils and other groups he proposed funding the project with money left over at the end of the academic year from activity budgets cohen said the proposed pub would be similar to the red door muhlenburg col lege's student pub which is managed by students and members of several campus groups cohen said the committee plans trips to the red door a pub at lafayette college and chi chi's to learn how to operate such a facility we are looking for a place to go to have fun food listen to music and hang out cohen said the pub must be well-planned and comfort able m order to be successful he added possible temporary locations for the pub include the university center's johnson room cafeteria and neville lounge certain renova tions would be made to the johnson room such as installation of disc jockey equipment and a dance floor said cohen if johnson is used it will be softened so it doesn't look like a dining hall cohen said the pub could also be located m lamberton hall after the new arts center is built the planned pub would feature waiter-waitress service and the menu would include primarily fast food operated through lehigh food services the pub would be open from 8 p.m to 2 a.m on thursday and saturday nights in addition to music other entertainment would include comedians performing early and late shows cohen said other programs under consideration to pro vide alternative activities during dry rush include renovating athletic facilities and installing racquetball courts a fitness course which would include 18 exercise stops may also be included students merchants team up for fall festival by pam lott brown and white news writer lehigh students and the south side merchants associa tion sma are teaming up to make a south side ethnic festival a reality this fall this is the third year the interfraternity council ifc the panhellenic council and the sma are attempting to get approval from the bethlehem area school district to use the fields of broughal middle school if we satisfy some questions we will getthe approval said thomas mohr sma president and owner of third street emporium we think it will be a reality this year proposed weekend dates have been narrowed down to sept 16-18 or sept 23-25 the event would start friday night and end sunday afternoon the objectives of the weekend festival are to bring together the south side community and to have an ethnic festival mohr said throughout the year on the south side mohr said there is a church bazaar here and an ethnic festival there he said he would like to throw them together into a big pot and have some fun with it there is so much to offer over here and all we want to do is to share it with the world we want the students to come we want an entire mingling of the community mohr explained we want the students to feel comfortable with the community he added the sma is lining up a ride company so the group can determine what the amusement company needs are and what it's going to take to pull this off mohr said the school district's approval hinges on the needs of the ride company he explained if we can get the school grounds it's going to happen said mohr and then we would like this to be an ongoing thing the group is meeting thursday and mohr said he hopes to have some of the amusement company questions answered this is as final as we can get before the students go on spring break he added it has been hard for the students because twice it has ifc to vote on bed race event's future unknown interfraternity council members will decide at tonight's ifc meeting on an alternative location for this year's bed race or they may decide not to hold the traditional greek week event at all according to ifc president jeff eichman 89 after several lengthy meetings where ifc members panhellenic council members administrators from the dean of students office and greek week chairpersons discussed their liability if an accident occurs during the event a decision was made to either hold the bed race off the hill or not to hold it associate dean of students michael boyd said they agreed having it on the hill was not an option we have yet to come up with a solution to make it safe on the hill boyd said the fraternities and sororities must bear the responsibility since people who are m charge and people who want to have the event should accept their share of the responsibility this year's decision not to hold the bed race on the hill is not a sudden decision according to boyd every year administrators from the dean of students office have tried to make the event safer last year they proposed to alter the course to a straight stretch of the hill but instead compromis ed with ifc members to merely shorten it from its original length but even if the course is held on the murray h goodman campus lehigh will be held responsible boyd said it depends on how important the race itself really is panelists to discuss sdi by steve pierce brown and white features writer adam levine president of lehigh univers ity student pugwash will moderate a panel discussion on the strategic defense initiative sdi tomorrow at 7 p.m m the university center neville lounge a diverse group of panelists will participate m the debate including joseph goldstein vice president for research at lehigh john hare philosophy department chairman r.w kraft materials science and engineering professor and brian hart a defense analyst for the national center for public policy research m washington d.c panelists will have ten minutes each to present their views on the sdi issue the floor will then be open for rebuttal and questioning the event is structured so everyone may express their viewpoints and the debate will last until every argument pro or con is exhausted levine explained pugwash is an apolitical organization which sponsors debates on pressing current issues levine said members do not take sides but instead present all aspects of an issue allow ing students to formulate their own views people need to make their own decisions levine said we cannot make decisions for someone else we can only make our own decisions
