mechanical engineering and civil engineering henry coppee lehigh's first president was a soldier and a professor of english john mcdowell leavitt his successor was a lawyer min ister and educator robert a lamberton the third president was a lawyer thomas m drown fourth was a medical doctor and profes sor of chemistry henry sturgis drinker fifth was a mining en gineer and lawyer dr charles r richards sixth was a mechanical engineer and educator and dr c c williams seventh was a civil engineer and educator lehigh's first president dr cop pee for whom coppee hall is named spent ten years in the army before entering academic life he was called to the presidency of lehigh from the university of pennsylvania where he was pro fessor of history and english liter ature dr john m leavitt lehigh's second president resigned in 1880 after five years of leadership to become president of st john's col lege annapolis md one of the present-day leaders in back-to the-classics type of education dr robert a lamberton pres ident from 1880 until 1893 was lehigh's first non-teaching pres ident devoting his entire time to administrative work he was le high's first president to die while in office come from m i t dr thomas m drown lehigh president from 1895 until 1904 came to lehigh after being head of the department of analytical chemistry at massachusetts insti tute of technology drinker house was named in his honor dr charles r richards le high's sixth and first smooth shaven president came to lehigh in 1922 from the deanship of the college of engineering at the uni versity of illinois named to com memorate him is richards house built during the presidency of dr c c williams as its no 7 president lehigh nrmed the dean of the school of engineering at the university of lowa dr williams who came to lehigh in 1935 with a background of teaching engineering adminis trative work and writing lehigh 3 s seven presidents have spent eventful lives moore franz chosen new if officers council to study grades and housing situation john h moore m.e.-044 and paul j franz bus.-044 were elected secretary and treasurer re spectively of the interfraternity council at the council's meeting monday night in drown hall these men replace david gear hart and robert l smith the present officers who are graduat ing in february the offices of president and vice-president will be held by w robert moore i.e 044 and william f bloecher e m.-044 these men are the pres ent officers and will hold their posts until the end of the spring semester smith reported that the if ball of jan 15 resulted in a loss of 240 the financial report of the dance will be found elsewhere in this issue in view of this loss it was tentatively decided that in the future orchestras will not be name bands the date of the next if ball will probably be march 11 the night of the eastern intercollegiate wrestling finals a tentative picture of the hous ing situation revealed that many of the houses face a loss of men and an attempt will be made to distribute the remaining students fairly so that a few houses will not be forced to accept undue fi nancial losses exam schedules are out get them at registrar's examination schedules ordinar ily published at this time of the semester in the brown and white were only released this morning so that they could not be reprinted in this issue the lists are available at the registrar's and will be reprinted in the next issue of the brown and white rader and romig will play at regimental ball feb 12 last call for queen of the ball contest warsage sales boom as 300 mark is reached two twelve-piece orchestras — those of bud rader and harry romig both well known in the lehigh valley for their excellent dance music — will provide the music for the first formal event to be given by the astp's at lehigh — the regimental ball to be held feb 12 in grace hall and using both the drill and basketball floors it was announced by leonard e arnoff of co c chairman of the event entries to date in the regimental queen of the ball contest sales of warsages town banquet features quiz forty men attended the town banquet held last saturday night in the university room of the ho tel bethlehem at which frank bowers quizmaster conducted a program following the dinner mr bowers an employee of bethlehem steel company was formerly associated with the mu tual broadcasting company some times as a technician and some times in the came capacity as that in which he served at the banquet quizmaster calling on the men seated around the table he would engage them in conversation by asking their name where they were from and perhaps their hob bies basing his questions on these conversations he awarded one to four times for answers to the ques tions he asked the hawthorne house newly organized chartered town section was welcomed to the organization and its president william poland eng.-j46 was introduced dr beardslee spoke to the group reminding them of the ser ious business of war and the part young men must play in it ralph a evans e.p.-j44 president of the council spoke a few words concerning the future of the group and theodore kleppinger chem f44 spoke concerning the election machinery which has been set up for the coming election of town council president since the term of the present president expires at the end of this semester and reservations for housing out of-town dates in fraternity houses on the campus testify to the inev itable success of the ball on the evening of the ball the new post commander replacing col james n caperton will be introduced bud rader's band having played at the first social astp function on nov 27 needs no introduciion to g i.'s here and already has been recognized as one of the best in the area it is a band which has been recognized as one of the best not only within the city of beth lehem but also in allentown where it is playing regular engage ments harry romig's the second band also is well-known to all who have attended lehigh dances in the past for he has played here on many occasions and is one of the foremost bands of the area both bands will bring their vo calists who will provide the lyri cal accompaniment for the orches tral sweet danceable music ro mig has always been known for his versatility and excellent dance arangements the rader band will occupy the main dance ballroom — the drill-floor ballroom while ro mig's band will reign on the bas ketball floor in grace hall last call for entrees in the queen of the ball contest was is sued this week by louis nicho laus chairman of the contest the deadline for entries has been set for feb 5 in order to give the judges sufficient time to consider the many entries nicholaus stres sed that every man attending the
