lehigh along with other major colleges will participate this week in the fourth annual national collegiate alcohol awareness week the main purpose of the event is to make students aware of problems associated with alcohol assisant dean of students janet walbert is leading the programs at lehigh among her many contributions to the school is her development of an educational program on substance abuse walbert said she feels students need to recognize the problems directly connected with alcohol also they must understand that alcohol may be a part of our society but only if it is used correctly lehigh needs to do things throughout the year not just one week as a result students can expect programs at key times during the year such as lehigh-lafayette weekend walbert said there are also a number of programs going on now she added kevin siddons is filling the new position of drug and alcohol counselor in addition there are a number of choices and decisions electives available for freshman during which walbert and siddons will give a lecture on alcohol awareness during the week there will be at least three general events a poster contest going on now a program tonight at 8 p.m in uc room 308 dealing with how alcohol affects athletics and a number of informational giveaways to enlighten students walbert is also pushing peer group awareness for these problems she is trying to funnel programs into fraternities and sororities the base of lehigh's social system she said students get more out of a program that is specific to their pcergroup living group etc she said her programs are not pushing for a dry rush or no pubnites but are looking for responsible drinking if there were not so many problems fights drunken driving incidents and cases of alcohol addiction the administration really wouldn't be so upset she said these problems however are still evident and the university is therefore responsible for legal matters addiction problems and alcohol related injuries she added deaths a year kilbourne said that more than 30 percent of fourth graders admitted to peer pressure to drink and there are more than 3.3 million teens in the united states who are alcoholics such companies like miller and budweiser target heavily toward college students since the college market translates into big business kilbourne said during that age we tend to form habits those companies aim to create big americans have a different attitude than europeans here the idea of intoxication is sophisticated this attitude is unhealthy " jean kilbourne drinkers and loyal
