brown and white news writer muriel and phillip bcrman added several sculptures to the collection they have donated to lehigh at a dedication scpl 14 the new sculptures include construction for outdoors n0.4 the temple variations of mita mishuna steel and stone steel form and two columns most of the bcrman collection sculptures can be seen in the sculpture garden between the sccley g mudd building whitaker laboratory and the fairchild-martindale library while others are located in saucon valley the new sculptures range from abstract shapes to distorted human figures constructed in steel wool and cloth berman founder of hess department store said we felt that the university with its expansive grounds could use some sculptures they are an appropriate part of the university's education and cultural function the bermans have donated 30 sculptures since 1980 in addition to monetary contributions japanese art pieces and more than 400 drawings about three and a half years ago the couple donated funds to establish a program for jewish studies in the college of arts and sciences this program is expanding and the department will hire more faculty members in the near future norman girardot chairman of the religion studies depart ment said the program has been very successful it is very clear that there definitely is a representation in that area area the bermans said they have traveled extensively to find the appropriate sculptures to donate to lehigh mr berman said the familiarity of art is thoughtful and meaningful most of their donated sculptures are contemporary in style since it is the art form of the present and future there is no point in replicati ng an ancient piece it does not make a fresh statement he said girardot commented that art lehigh president peter likins officially opened the mountaintop campus with a traditional ribbon-cutting ceremony on saturday casey likins the mayors of bethlehem and hellertown rep don rittcr and other local business community government and university representatives participated in the opening in his remarks likins said the state has helped to forge a partnership between private academic institutions and the business sector."this partnership is an enterprise compris ed of academic pursuits and business excellence he added casey calling lehigh a world class institution for research said pennsylvania is a national leader with its renowned public and private universities with lehigh among them they have a leading role to play in our efforts to create jobs and expand economic opportunity in the commonwealth this new lehigh campus is a good example of that leadership lehigh acquired the mountaintop campus in december 1986 from bethlehem steel corp for 18.75 million the 742 acre addition nearly doubled the total property owned by lehigh to 1,600 acres the complex includes five research buildings which presently house the atlss center a bioprocesses lab the college of education the chemical engineering department the lacocca institute and the ben franklin technical center the pennsylvania government provided 10 million in b&w photo by jill rjcken president uklns for this performance are 50 25 and a limited number of 10 scats reserved for student according to director of community relations jim harper lcontyne's brother said she was motivated to perform at lehigh mainly because she is very interested chapel centennial bash readied by susan barone brown and white news writer the 100 th anniversary of packer memorial chapel will be celebrated during founders day weekend oct 9 10 and 11 the celebration will feature a performance by an emmy-award winning soprano vocalist a lecture and rehearsal by a pulitzer prize winning compos er church lectures by guest speakers and musical performances by students alumni and guests the chapel was donated by mary packer cummings daughter of lehigh founder asa packer in memory of his death the first founders day celebration in commemoration of the founding of lehigh was held oct 13 1887 upon completion of church construction according to lehigh chaplain hugh flesh er the church has served the community not only through religious services but also through various lectures and concerts i would like the chapel to be a place for everyone to enjoy flesher said the celebration will begin friday at 4:15 p.m in lamberton hall with a discussion of verdi's requiem by 1987 pulitzer prize winner in music john harbison who is the resident composer of the los angeles philharmonic and professor of music at the massachusetts institute of technology beginning at 5:15 p.m the same evening a public rehearsal of the requiem will be conduc ted i n the chapel by professor emeritus robert cutler and choir director steven samctz this reading session continuing between 8 p.m and 10 p.m will include current choir mem bers as well as choir alumni music chairman paul salerni said the participants will be sight reading the music and the conductors will be instructing them throughout the practice we opened this event to the public so non-musicians can see the workbehind putting a piece of music together
