met monday iitt^ht to d;s isss problems of the students rolo in forum projects the nieptinc was sparselv attended h onlv 20 of the student forum members the meeting suffered from the problem it was trving to correct as the members present were essentially the ones who have doing much of the work all along it was the feeling of those who did attend that there is a lack of interest on the part of some student forum members and a general unwillingness on the part of manv to speak out at the meet i m r s three main problems were mentioned at the meeting as being essential to over come first before anything else can bo accomplished it is necessary to get most of the present forum members more involved in forum activities this is directed mainly at the junior and sophomore members who will be forced to assume the student leadership next vear the second problem is how to relate the forum activities to the rest of the student body it was noted that the present forum members must talk to other university students in order to get them interested in the forum work this applies especially to upperclassmen who are cognizant of what is happening at the university and could i m mediately help to work out the problems the final problem enumerated wns how to get freshmen involved in the forum structure it was felt that many freshmen are probably willing to work but just are unaware of what is going on at the university therefore it is necessary to m.ike a concerted effort to inform the froshmen about what is happening and get them interested in working to improve the s tudent position the main of all of these efforts is to hopefully create a situation wherebv the students who will be here next year will be able to get together and give a generally unified student view the students are beginning to sil bark and do nothing and next year when many of the baw photo by cost an za lack of attendance at a student caucus monday demonstrated the lack of interest that has plagued student government all year it is hoped that the students will be able to get together to present a unified student view u.s may go fascist by vote says coffin by john lazenby the united states is pursuing a deliberate strategy of protective failure and may be the first nation in history to go fascist by democratic vote said reverend william sloane coffin jr in an address at muhlenberg college tuesday advocating an inter national peace-keeping police force and an international income tax coffin said man needs the courage to change irresponsible institutions — corporations colleges or churches — that are mangling lives coffin chaplain at yale university and tried with dr benjamin spock for allegedly aiding draft resistors spoke on state of the nation promised land or back to egrypt he drew parallels between the situation of the united states today and the biblical story of the israelites flight from egypt moving backwards he said that america is on the threshold of the promised land but instead of moving forward we hold back we have already elected a captain quite prepared to take us back to egypt to spiritual slavery and repression though the present looks like the antechamber to hell it can be the antechamber to heaven said coffin spirit-mangling institutions private and public are the giants in the land because they set the values individuals live by they are the reasons americans fear the future domestically college education is mostly scholarship and little education he said much of this scholarship is monumental trivia . shedding light on things not worth i lluminating legality of statutes questioned by pat hendrick editor's note this is the second of four articles dealing with amend ments to p.l 1546 passed this year in the pennsylvania legislature , their constitutionality , effects and how they may pertain to student life at the university the real question in dealing with the statutes passed in the state legislature outlining restrictions and removal of state financial aid to students is not one of resisting the laws but of testing their constitutionality in the courts according to dean of student life william l quay one must consider " the ideas of equal protection under the law as guaranteed by the 14th amend ment quay continued that he would like to see legai action taken to get these statntes before the supreme court to test their constitutionality the constitution ality he said is the real question 1 ' 14th amendment as these statutes stand they could be construed as a denial of the due process guarantees of the fifth amendment as applied to the states in the 14th amend ment the students affected by these statutes would in effect be labeled as second class citizens quay continued that " the colleges should be able to discipline their own students he objected to the state's requiring schools to supply information on their students saying civil offenses should be handled by the civil courts 1 ' this method now proposed by the state said quay is rather a backhanded way of handling the thing opposition to statutes quay said he supported the american assn of university professors caaup opposition to the statutes he also said he was in favor of haverford college's suit against the amendments in the united states district court for the eastern district of pennsylvania but that he did not espouse open opposition to the laws as long as the statutes are in existence 7 ' said quay the university should abide by them opposition he continued should be voiced through legal oction in the courts who pays open defiance to the statutes quay said would involve too great a cost " we the university won't pay the price the students pay he price i'm nn * nayirtf the price personally this is the really knotty part of the problem if an individual school were to defy the statutes that institution and all students attending the college would lose or be denied all pennsylvania higher education assistance agency pheaa money quay said he would be unwilling to risk this supplying information he said the statutes should be changed so that no information on the personal actions of students on campus should be given the state unless it's with the student's permission such information he said should only be supplied on subpoena from the courts but not as a matter of course as specified in the amendments to p.l ir>4g quay said the university would probably cooperate with the state on the statutes b&w photo by camana on the threshold of the promised land"--the reverend 4 see financial page 4 see danger page 4 financial aid applications for financial aid for 1971-72 are now available in the office of admission and financial aid alumni memorial building they should be picked up before the christmas vacation to insure sufficient time for completing and processing by the college scholar ship service by the march 15 deadline this notice applies to all under graduates currently receiving university assistance and wishing to be considered for continued assistance and all others wishing to be considered by the committee in its june 1971 meeting questions should be directed to mr stanford of the admissions office
