brown and white special edition bethlehem pa saturday novehber 22 19*9 j«-wl rivalry began in 1884 lafayette holds edge by kenny rilander tomorrow afternoon ln new haven conn harvard will attempt to overthrow the ells of yale m the 86th meeting of these two schools america's second most-played football rivalry approximately 150 miles away m taylor stadium the packers will meet the leopards of lafayette for the 105 th gridiron classic between these two schools america's most played rivalry the seeds of rivalry were sown on oct 25 1884 when the leopards beat tbe packer eleven 50-0 ln easton in the early years and during world war ii the teams often mat twice m ons season and m 1891 thsy clashed on three occasions the only year m which the teams have not met on toe gridiron was 1896 when there was a conflict over a lafayette player's eligibility causing ths only rift ln the series lehigh was justified ln their decision not to play according to casper whitney noted sports authority of the day over the past 85 years there have been many memorable experiences ln the gridiron battles m 1884 richard harding davis a husky lehigh halfback who later became a sportswriter war correspondent novelist and playwright led ths packer eleven is the first battle between the two teams he not only was a major player in ths battle but also reported ths action for ths student press by mentally recording play-by-play not from a position back of the ropes but behind the rush line where i had an uninterrupted view of the field according to davis only three undergraduates had played the game before the first lehigh eleven challenged all comers and m the first match with lafayette the first university game ever played by lehigh according to davis the other men had learned what little they knew of the game ln three weeks of practice with the class elevens then we prevailed upon the college to pay 52 for eleven brown and white jerseys and we thought that what we did not know about the game was not worth learning with this idea ln mind we went down to easton and played the first of those me mor able games davis wrote 50-0 loss lehigh lost 50-0 but they did not come beck without a feeling of accomplishment a lehigh man wrote we old not win . but we gave lafayette the worst licking she ever bad m her existence and many many a sore head went back to easton that night in ths second contest a few weeks later the packers finally made it onto tte scoreboard with davis registering the touchdown but lehigh felled to control tbe overpowering leopard offense aad lost s4-4 a touchdown m those days was only worth four points it was not until oct 29 1587 that the packers finally gained their first victory it was a cold fall day m bethlehem when the fans saw two touchdowns by corbin and a safety against lafayette bring lehigh its first win 10-4 the lafayette paper blamed the loss on poor calls by the officials our team never minds defeat when it is done ln a fair game the lafayette paper said but where we have to play a team with a blindly partial referee and an umpire who ls simply a burlesque it is dis couraging longest play the longest official play m the series occured on nov 5 1898 when james ross of lehigh returned a pont 100 yards for a score playing fields were 110 yards long at the time the packers won the game 22-0 for their fourteenth win of the rivalry on nov 20 1909 lafayette surprised lehigh with the circus double forward pass of the two to a touchdown variety and beat the packers 21-0 the trick play cams late ln the game and was accomplished by having william dannehower the quarterback pass the ball to aaron crane the left tackle who was lined up 18 yards behind the line crane threw a forward pass to frank irmschler the left halfback who scored the play covered 47 yards from scrimmage ths most impressive lehigh win cams on nov si 1917 in bethlehem when the packers blasted the leopards 78-0 for tha most points scored by
