lehigh university brown and white vol at no 10 mmmmmmm bethlehem pa tuesday october 8 1974 i-sm.y.-:vx<vx-xv:v:vx-:*:««x-wvx .■: : : 866-0331 forum study group established to consider report on tenure by ed bogucz an ad hoc committee will be established to study the forum tenure committee's report according to ira schulman 76 chairman of the academic environment committee frank hook professor of english authored the report which was submitted to the forum more than a month ago the report followed one year of research into university tenure policies the steering committee of forum v decided at its oct 1 meeting that the ad hoc committee should be formed to study the tenure report the committee will also be responsible for making any possible proposals for improvements in the present tenure system the tenure report makes no recommendations for modification of the current tenure process schulman pointed out that the tenure committee was charged with the task of finding out what procedures are currently being followed in tenure and promotion decisions and making that information available to the university community the tenure report is a document showing the research that has been done on the present tenure policies schulman said the report doesn't propose any changes its charge didn't require it to he explained schulman said that it is now the forum's job to use the report as the basis for modification of the present system he said the university faculty will be kept informed and that care will be taken not to encroach on faculty prerogatives resolutions introduced at faculty meetings voicing faculty suggestions concerning the report would be desirable schulman said one important issue in the tenure process according to schulman is that of student input student input is a means by which the students have a say in the evaluation of a teacher eligible for tenure schulan said i'm concerned about just how seriously the university takes student input con cerning the tenure system schulman commented any change in the tenure system without a provision for student notice served to defendants in fishkin suit five of the ten defendants named in the fishkin suit have received official notice from the u s marshall's office the suit names the university three deans four students and the national and local chapters of delta phi fraternity according to richard groves 75 president of delta phi he and the three other members of the fraternity have yet to be served notice as does the local chapter of delta phi the national office of delta phi has been served but considers the suit a fishing expedition according to the rev ken nedy roberts national vice president he said there is no basis for the suit as far as we're concerned it's a nuisance the national office is in the process of closing down for good according to father roberts because its total assets are under 1,000 including the contents of the office itself he also said the national office has no insurance ' we were in the middle of a merger until the suit came up said father roberts he added that with the suit in progress the other fraternity phi mu delta was and would continue to be somewhat reticent unless legal steps are taken to protect their assets the university preston parr vice emergency class limits passed to relieve crowding in business by george now ack and dave klucsik the educational policy committee edpol thursday passed a motion that will limit the class size in courses offered by the business college this is the first time that the university has restricted course size in an entire college it was passed as an emergency measure and will only be in effect during the 1975-76 academic year the limitations will be used as a means of balancing the enrollment in the affected courses no one will be denied from taking a course however students may not be able to take a particular course in the semester they wish there are just too many people signing up at once said brian brockway dean of the college of business and economics this will just be a means of balancing class size between the semesters he said we have no idea how it will work said max snider associate dean of the business college he said that there were not enough teachers to handle the 926 business un dergraduates in addition to students from the engineering arts colleges we hope this system will help alleviate the current overcrowding problem he said charles tipton chairman of edpol said the restriction was intended to enhance the classroom situation in the business college even though students may be inconvenienced in sequential courses tipton added that in the background there exists the danger of losing ac creditation in the business college due to overcrowding he also said the restrictive proposal is expected to solve the over crowding problem in other business at last week's edpol meeting the committee approved a proposal to establish a five-day add-drop period for certain seminar courses mostly offered in the business college tipton said that some courses don't meet often enough to allow a student to enter at a later date thereby missing a substantial amount of course material tipton said course in structors would be consulted to determine which courses should have a five-day add drop limit the committee also approved a proposal to drop plus and minus signs from ab sent and withdrawn grade report notations tipton said this was to facilitate computer processing of the reports all actions approved by the committee are subject to faculty approval biw photo by baiz brian g brockway citizen's group opposes north side renewal plan by donna m frabotta david amidon lecturer in urban studies has criticized the particular form of so-called be transformed into the principle commercial area of the lehigh valley te improper method is the extensive use of public subsidies federal agreement with city bans college theater concerts the university cannot use the college theater for concerts because of com mittments to the city of bethlehem and south side 76 according to eric ottervik vice president for planning in the oct 1 issue of the brown and white student activities council sac concert chairman mark linder said the university concert schedule could double if the college theater were available for concert use the university has an agreement with the bethlehem city council not to use the college theater for dramatics or any kind of performing arts building ot tervik said the agreement was made to avoid competition with bethlehem's proposed performing arts center planned for a site at broad and main streets the center would house a 500-seat theater and 2,200-seat convention hall ottervik added that the university also promised south side 76 that it would not use the building and would hold it until the group is ready to develop that area south side 76 is a volunteer citizen group for development of bethlehem's south side when south side 76 is ready to develop the area the university will sell the building to redevelopment officials according to ottervik according to university trustee prank rabold any plans
