lusardi — last in a series — rumors about administration salaries were a factor in the drop in fatuity morale but we would have been concerned anyway according to joseph dowling professor of history and secretary of the faculty compensation committee speculation that the administration is overpaid spread among the faculty after the distribution of an administrative-staff job-level chart in december the chart depicted a 12-level job-classification system and provided salary range minimums midpoints and maximums the chart did not explain that the salary figures did not depict actual adminis trative salaries some faculty members assumed they were actual salaries the faculty compensation committee formed in january is intended to open lines of communication between faculty and administration and to investigate and discuss faculty compensation and salary issues low faculty morale also is a con cern of the committee the crux of the faculty's argument for higher salaries goldstein said is that university faculty receive lower mean salaries than faculty at 20 comparable institutions for example the mean salary of a full professor at a private university is 28,403 according to the chronicle of higher learning the university mean salary for full professors is 25,708 as reported to the american association of university professors see table a comparison of faculty and adminis trative salaries is only a side issue in the view of the faculty goldstein said he said a table recently drawn up by vice president for administration richard spriggs which compared the faculty median salary with the administration median is not valid because it excludes the salaries of academic deans the president and vice presidents there is no comparison except at the highest levels between us and the administration he said administrative staff at the lowest levels do not have the same responsi forum planners clash over plaza by ed bogucz student leaders clashed with university planners again this week over plans for the proposed plaza highrise as a result of the conflict forum ix wednesday called on university trustees to adopt a plaza design change the administration had rejected at issue was whether windows would be provided in the living room of each suite apartment in the proposed residence facility students said the windows are of prime importance to the highrise design administrators said the university could not afford them windows make a tremendous dif ference to students said mike silverman forum ix vice chairman it has been proved by experts that rooms without natural lighting are not popular silverman said schools that have apartments which contain no windows in living areas have reported trouble in filling those residence spaces two months ago student members of the plaza review board the vehicle for student opinion in the highrise planning process submitted a report to the ad ministration detailing the minimum specifications required for the plaza plans to be acceptable to students the report stated that all student lounge areas and suite living rooms had to be designed to include natural lighting last month the students reiterated their request by calling for a change in the design of the highrise which would allow for windows in all suite living rooms a plan which had been given preliminary approval by the university's top trustees called for windows in the living rooms of just one-half of the 50 student suites after the students called for a change in the highrise design last month the project's architects submitted a revised plan for the building which included windows in all the living areas the revised building was larger than the original design and the architects estimated that the new plan would cost 103,000 more than the original design according to william quay dean of students the cose of the original plan had been estimated at 2.1 million quay said the administration rejected the new plan because the increased cost would have to be absorbed by the other students in the residence system based on the tight budget for the building the additional 103,000 looked to us to be rather problematical he said students learned of the decision when the plaza program committee the review board's name was changed two weeks ago after the administration decided the university would fund tbe project met wednesday morning to consider plans for the building's first floor dining and recreational area seven hours after their morning meeting the students submitted a resolution to the forum calling on the university board of trustees to reconsider mike silverman delta tau delta draws charges for wet t-shirts charges of violations of the university code of conduct have been filed against delta tau delta fraternity for holding last thursday's wet t-shirt contest according to peter joyce 79 president of delta tau delta joyce said a hearing before the university's committee en discipline has been set for 9 p.m monday joyce refused to elaborate on the charges which were filed by the dean of students office but a reliable university source said the charges are b violations b violations are minor with a maximum permissible punishment of disciplinary probation according to the university handbook william quay dean of students and robert reeves associate dean of students refused to comment on the charges however the brown and white has learned that delts will be charged as a group with a violation of posted or published rules and regulations also a charge of violation of the pennsylvania pp&d report approved 4 1.5 million fund goal set by jim donahue the report of the priorities planning and development pp&d committee which calls for a fund raising goal of 41.5 million for the second phase of the new century fund was accepted by forum ix tuesday in other business the forum trans mitted the report of the academic credit subcommittee to the educational policy edpol committee it also passed a resolution calling on the board of trustees to reconsider plans for the plaza highrise to provide natural light in all lounges also passed were changes for the 1979-1980 and 1980-1981 calendars the report recommended that 8.5 million of the new century fund be used for an 85,000-gross square foot addition to mart library to be built in eight years another 4.25 million would be used for an endowment for the addition and 1.5 million would be allocated for renovations of linderman library interest from additional endowment money would be used for improving faculty salaries and other people needs mary tarduno 79 pp&d chairman said another 7 million of the new century fund should be put into new equipment the report said robert folk professor of physics presented a pp&d minority report his report called for a smaller less expensive library addition to be built within seven years a separate study area outside the libraries and more money for endowment a motion to substitute folk's report for the majority report was defeated calendar modified the forum modified its calendar that it approved earlier in the semester for 1979 1980 and 1980-1981 hugh flesher university chaplain said the changes would eliminate conflicts with spring sports schedules graduation also was moved from memorial day to the following week the resolution on
