lehigh university brown and white vol 93 — no 3 215 861-4184 bethlehem pa friday september 4 1981 devo blackfoot slated to perform for fall concerts new wave band devo will be presented by the student activities council and makoul productions in stabler arena oct 21 pending a written contract according to jon lewis 84 sac concert chairman an on-sale date for tickets has not yet been announced but lewis said he is - negotiating with makoul productions inq an attempt to put tickets on sale for stu dents two days before they become avail able to the general public he said he has arranged for preferred seating for students on oct 6 makoul productions will present blackfoot with deaf leopard in stabler arena lewis will be notified today about whether a sac bid for pat metheny on oct 16 or 17 was accepted in addition oct 25 is being held b stabler arena for electric factory to promote bob dylan however this per formance is contingent on dylan's approval lewis said stabler arena is holding nov 24 open for makoul productions to promote black sabbath but again the concert is contingent on the group's approval toasted buns residents of hill house celebrated their first week together with a sunday afternon ballgamc and barbecue rvpi ' ' ■henfield computer down following weekend tampering by tom di piazza the university's pdp 11 computer was shut down saturday after illegal access to the system was gained appar ently through the use of a privileged password according to ben wechsler director of the computing center according to wechsler a privileged password which should have been known only by the center's programmers was used to erase some of the system files which run the computer the erasing of the system files caused the four-day computer shutdown he said it looks like somebody went in there and purged files wechsler said he said a privileged code had to be used to erase the programs but he did not know how anyone outside the center could have learned the password i haven't the vaguest idea at this point — in theory it's impossible but in practice it does happen periodically wechsler said he added however that nothing this serious had ever happened before this is not a prank this is not vandal ism wechsler said it's a very serious offense although the computing center's investigation has not been completed wechsler said that someone was fool ing around with the system saturday morning and that it was taken down that afternoon however he said some one may have been working on the sys tem for more than one day somebody worked like a trojan to get this done wechsler said he said the computer remained down until tuesday afternoon when service was restored after shutting it down tuesday night for additional work the computing center returned the pdp 1 1 to full service wed nesday morning according to wechsler one of his pro grammers worked around the clock t reload the systems file to get the com puter back in service with the system files student use files were also erased wechsler said he said the files consisted of student course work which the computing cen ter cannot reload now a bunch of students have t spend god knows how many hours pu ting the files back in wechsler sai for the students that were cheated ant robbed this way their primary bone boniour this former warren square unit now houses the french spanish house the residence joins the german and interna tional houses as alternative forms of housing see story page 6 biw pholo by jeff stewahti kansas lowers sac debt by joyce fine the success of last friday's kansas concert has cut the student activities council's sac existing debt by nearly one-third according to a sac concert chairman jon i^ewis 84 lewis made the announcement at a sac meeting tuesday at which time this year's sac social activities and budget were also discussed at the end of the 1980-81 academic year the sac was approximately 2,900 in debt due to concert losses because last week's concert cleared approxi mately 900 the sac's debt decreased to 2,000 lewis mentioned that buses provided by the university for transportation to stabler arena had many empty seats and perhaps should no longer be made available hourglass committee member jeff aibel 82 said the thursday night hour glasses will continue to be held in the university snack bar this year the entertainment will be mainly jazz and guitar musicians aibel said that he also hopes to get at least one outrageous act something out of the ordinary for this season in addition aibel said that when there are closed parties on the hill the snack bar will be scheduled for dancing and open-mike entertainment some friday nights a few saturday nights will be reserved for special events he said this year's tentative programming and publicity allocation for the hour glass is 10,200 aibel said to guarantee that the hourglass breaks even there will be a 25 cent cover charge and a 75 cent minimum purchase requirement aibel said that the committee is trying to keep it within reason so the hourglass doesn't get dropped the hourglass committee will also place a seven-foot television screen in the snack bar so that sports fans can watch monday night football there is a possibility that the television will be available during the day for general hospital viewers see students page 9
