7:30 in the evening under the sponsorship of the lehigh stu dent chapter of the american so ciety of mechanical engineers all mechanical engineers and ad vanced ast mechanical engineers are especially invited to attend but other students will be admit ed as far as the seating capacity of packard auditorium permits dr sikorsky who has just de signed and perfected the first practical helicopters for his com pany will present a movie in ad dition to his talk on the subject his experiments on this type of aircraft were begun in russia when he first began to take an in terest in aircraft discarded when they proved impractical and be gun again in recent years when developments in the field of aero nautical engineering made them feasible the army has experi mentally tested the newer models for submarine spotting and recon naisance lehigh audiences were addressed on two previous occasions by the noted inventor who told of his eventful experiences in russia france england and the united states on founder's day oct 3 1941 lehigh university conferred on him the honorary degree of doc tor of engineering seniors in the department of mechanical engineering or any member of the student branch of american society of mechanical engineers will be welcome at a dutch treat dinner for dr si korsky at the hotel bethlehem at 6 o'clock friday evening nov 5 any student wishing to have din ner with this group should see prof thomas e jackson mechan ical engineering department soldiers like savitt's swing the cola-cola company's vic tory parade of spotlight bands which was broadcast from grace hall last thursday night with jan savitt's band playing the feature role was witnessed by a capacity crowd of 1500 soldiers and honored guests along with 500 civilian stu dents and bethlehem townspeople after a 15 minute introduction to savitt his players and the sharp-witted blue network an nouncer the coke program went on the air to 157 network stations everybody in the audience enjoy ed the show immensely and of fered loud applause to everything savitt offered with special ap plause to linda gray featured so loist and buddy chester boogy woogie performer company b offered some talent ed entertainment during the post broadcast show with a twelve man chorus led by otto lilien who introduced an original ditty and two soloists bob wilkens and hal lichterman giving out on the trumpet and piano respectively bob wilkens hot trumpeter of company b and hal lichterman give out in the after-broadcast show of the victory parade of spotlight bands a twelve man chorus also of company b sang an original little chant entitled sine cosine secant and sine linda gray soloist with jan savitt's orchestra enter tains the crowd of 2000 with one of her well-received ren ditions of the popular tunes while in the background buddy chester star performer on the licorice stick gives out on the sax 3&w photos by kane and kynor part of the 1500 ast students who attended the affair sales total 250 approximately 400 couples will attend the fall prom this satur day night announced jack dox sey m e f'44 chairman of the dance committee trainee ticket sales totaled about 250 while ci vilian tickets amounted to be tween 150 and 200 thus the dance is assured of financial suc cess the dance will cap a weekend of fall festivities that includes the first football rally of the season a soccer game at muhlenberg and the first home football game of the season against west virginia the prom will begin at 10 in the eve ning and continue until 2 in an swer to several queries concern ing the proper dress for dates at tending the dance street clothes will be proper but if dates desire to wear formal dresses they will not be out of place hackett to furnish music music for the dance will be pro vided by bobby hackett and his all-star nbc orchestra hackett has gained much fame for him self as one of the top cornetists continued on page 4 we are all members of lehigh said col james trainees and the civilian students in the near future a letter and a picture of the lehigh campus will be sent free to all of the trainees the letter will explain some of the history of lehigh and tell of some of her alumni who have served in this and the last war also there is a possibility that the two pep rallies later in the season will be sponsored by the first and second battalions stationed here and that a competi tion will be held for the okeson cup formerly awarded to the class giving the best football rally ast donations near goal in a preliminary report on the campus community chest drive it was reported that nearly 1300.00 were given by the ast men and officers stationed here the goal of 1600.00 has not been reached but collections have not been made from one company and a report on the donations of the officers has not been turned in yet the apportionment of the fund to the various services was completed a portion of the army relief fund will be left in the hands of arcadia and will be continued on page 4 tachment at lehigh leo prender gast head football coach and ben bishop bishop won national col legiate wrestling championship in his senior year and served as captain for the team that won nine dual meets and the eiwa title he was one of the first lehigh men to be represented on the american olympic team he made the trip to berlin in 1936 with the wrestl ing team but did not wrestle in the actual competitions o new ast insignia adopted by army a distinctive insignia has been adopted for the ast according to the headquarters of the second service command at governors island new york this new insignia will show a lamp of knowledge and sword of valor in blue on a yellow back ground and will be worn on the left sleeve the new insignia will replace the unit insignias now worn by the ast men of the university commanding officer of the ast de at 6:30 friday night the first football rally of the season will get under way at grace hall both civilian students and trainees are urged to attend and free smokes will as usual be provided for all attending the rally will last until 7:30 and will follow the traditional form of lehigh pep rallies a sheet of lehigh songs and cheers will be mimeo graphed and passed out to both students and trainees the band will play and there will be short talks by two local members of the faculty and a prominent le high alumnus trainees expected to return ast men are urged to attend in order that they may learn the university songs and cheers the rally will be over in time for men to return to their
