85 increase is expected thirty - seven more advanced rotc men returned to lehigh monday from fort mcclellan bringing to 85 the number of first and second year advanced rotc students now here all of latest group have been accepted by officer candidate school and recommended for in fantry school at fort benning ga most of the infantry group which includes a number of men who were previously arts students will be taking ast engineering cours es according to dean congdon those engineers who finished their junior years with good grades will take civilian courses designed to comple te their curricula as all but 9 of 38 ordnance men who re turned previously from aberdeen are doing although the majority of rotc men had just completed their jun ior year when they left here last june the radio stations in favor of a campus production for ast men and civilian students the production will be a bur lesque of some play already writ ten and will be within the limita tions of good clean fun which will be readily acceptable to soldiers and civilians alike albert maccauley and keith amish have been returned to le high with ast units and intend to continue their m&c work with their civilian colleagues the m&c wants anyone inter ested in stage work — either acting or behind-the-scenes — to contact the following men as soon as pos sible lowell judis pi landa phi 141 east market street or abolished jan savitt to play here on thursday program arranged for rotc astp students the officers and men of the astp stationed at lehigh univer sity will receive a high form of entertainment and the first of its kind when jan savitt and his or chestra will appear here on the victory parade of spotlight bands on thursday oct 25 this program sponsored by the coca-cola bottling company of pennsylvania is heard six nights a week from army navy marine coast guard and merchant ma rine bases throughout the country it has won popular acclaim for its ability to raise the morale of the men in service savitt whose featured vocalist is the beautiful elisse cooper is right up there among the top band leaders of the country he is fa mous for him new type of swing which is a result of his blending classical music with more of the modern routine begins at 9:30 l lehigh civilian students and members of the faculty are in vited to attend this program which is to be held at grace hall at 9:30 p m but positively no one will be admitted after 9:15 all members of the 3309 th service unit astp and rotc classes will not need a ticket but will be admitted by uniform civilian students not in uniform and members of the faculty ad ministration and general staff can secure a ticket at the box of fice in grace hall on the night of the performance only by pre senting their athletic ticket and having item 3 punched bobby hackett signed for nov 6 dance tickets are 2.75 — civilians and 1.65 — ast a-12,v-12 offer tests the second nationwide qualify ing test for candidates who wish to be considered for the army sp?cialized training program and the navy college program v-12 will be held on tuesday novem ber 9 men e.igibl to take the examination must be present in packard laboratory room 416 by 8:50 tuesday morning must have form fcr test no person will be admitted without the necessary application properly certified by the registrar that the person is a regularly ma triculated student enrolled in le high university a few forms for application are still available at the office of the dean of under graduates any student may take the test providing he is a graduate of a high school or preparatory school or a senior with prospects of grad uation by next march 1 test for army and navy the same two-hour examina tion will be taken by both army and navy candidates the ex amination is designed to test the aptitude and general knowledge required for the program of col lege training and all qualified stu dents are urged to take the test at the time of the test each can didate will be given a choice of service preference but taking the test does not obligate the candi date to enlist in the service any student whose date of birth is between march 2 1924 and continued hackett one of the very top cornet men in the jazz world will bring with him a 12-piece orches tra that will include such men as eddie condon guitarist pee wee irwin sax and clarinet men and johnny mcgee star trumpet play er these men play in various studio orchestras during the week and on saturday nights play as a group for occasions such as the coming dance vocalist for the orchestra is martha perry who sings on many nbc sustaining programs the orchestra is really a collection of key men who play in many other bands as such they know each other's style and should play excellent danceable music trainees may purchase their tickets from the first sergeant in their company civilian students living in fraternity houses will be able to buy tickets from a repre sentative in the house while men of the town group will be con tacted by men in their section all students both civilian and trainee may buy their tickets at either the supply bureau or the arcadia office advance the successor to bix bei derbecke the greatest white cor net player who ever lived about two years ago nbc put on a pro gram concerned with the life story or beiderbecke and hackett was given the coveted position as the man who played beiderbecke's solos during the program has played with miller during his short career he has played with glenn miller and horace heidt but in the main he has done his best work in nick's the greenwich village night club that is the informal jazz center of america he has made several records for the commodore mu sic shop a company that spe cializes in issuing nothing but jazz classics perhaps the first record that put hackett on his road to fame was the andrews sisters record of bei bist dv schoen he was the featured trumpeter and his work was so fine that record was reissued in his name continued on page 6 experimentation in welding brought these mem bers of lehigh's metallurgical department national honors last week they received the lincoln medal in chicago awarded by the american welding society for experimentation and a paper en titled preserving ductility in weldments which was selected as representing the greatest contribution to the advancement and use of welding for the year 1943 although not included in the medal awards sadun tor mem ber of the metallurgical department research staff and martin sheska department technician aided in the experiment shown above are left to right dr john fry jr robert stout and dr gilbert doan all members of the department of metal lurgy purpose of the lehigh experimenting in welding has
