the meeting was actually one of the combined councils at which dean congdon spoke to the group regarding the entertainment of continued on page 4 post war credit for astp soldiers awaiting answer by pfc perry c wolff co a the war department has chosen to be somewhat vague concerning the exact circumstances of its specialized training program but there is one phase of the program which should be cleared up immediately as yet the soldiers in training have not been informed of the exact work towards an accredited diploma of the courses they are now tak ing information of this sort can hardly be of use to the enemy and as a matter of fact is of no concern to the war department which is interested in trained specialists rather than diplomas the soldiers surmise that credits will be determined by the regis trar and in view of president roosevelt's recent statements con cerning post-war allotments for service men's education the ques tion of credits has become more poignant since many of the men are planning to finish an engineer ing course after the war the problem is complex for it must be admitted that a college diploma should reflect a maturity of opin ion which comes with four years study rather than with fifteen months of facts courses not normal also there would have to be standardization throughout all the colleges offering the astp pro gram since any deviation would be unfair not only to the soldiers but to the engineering profession then too the rapidity and sketch iness of some of the courses makes it impossible to equate them to a normal curriculum as soldiers we are here under orders and we do not expect grat uities while our brothers are fight ing our war lehigh university has entered in a contract with the government to provide technicians and from what we understand any normal credit is outside the terms of this contract but we are ac cumulating a body of knowledge which would have to be uselessly repeated after the war if no credit is given many of the men sta tioned at lehigh plan to return if the fortunes of war permit and if they would not have to go to excess expense to complete their education while the problem is difficult it is nevertheless solvable we un derstand that in the formative period of astp the registrars cannot make a definite statement but it would clear up a good deal of confusion if a partial estimate or a denial of credits were to be made o post session opens runs until aug 25 a group of 33 graduate students registered last thursday for the post session course which runs from aug 5 until aug 25 all
