lehigh radio men to get certificates a group of 21 lehigh valley men who have been studying radio at lehigh university will enter the army as technicians and radio operators in the air forces some time in august the group which enlisted last december as privates will receive certificates on july 24 showing their satisfactory com pletion of the 32 week course the men are subject to 24 hour call after certification their definite destinations are not yet known but they will be sent to complete their training and later will be stationed on aircraft and at airfields brown and white editorial writers ad-chasers and pho tographic staffmen will lay aside newspaper duties this week-end when they will stage a freshman versus up perclass softball game and picnic plans are being made to draft kenneth k kost former faculty business - adviser as umpire following the ball game scheduled for 4 o'clock the journalists will have a picnic lunch at the home of prof wallace r biggs the combined ball-game picnic will replace the usual first-semester banquet nor mally held during the fall semester b & w picnic coming up ball game to be feature prexy views aero - editorial ten rotc men return to lehigh live with astp group more may follow soon ten advanced rotc men from the class of 1944 x returned to the campus yesterday after spending almost two months of training at the aberdeen proving grounds in maryland these men arrived on the campus yesterday morning and although plans are somewhat indefinite it is believed that they will be able to receive their di plomas by sometime in the major r h johnson astp bat talion commander reported that these men will be under astp regulations while they are on the campus but their schedule of courses will be different from those taken b the regular trainees on the campus they are now split up into the three barracks that are now being used for the trainees the return of these men to the campus closely follows a memor andum received by dean congdon from the war department another memorandum received from the war department dated july 11 concerns the disposition of advanced rotc students i—all1 — all second year advanced rotc students who have already graduated will be sent to ocs all will have entered by sept 30 2 — second year rots students who have not graduated from col lege and who have not yet en tered ocs will be permitted to go back to college at their request and continue their schooling they will be permitted to complete the semester in progress on dec 31 1943 unless graduated sooner 3 — first year advanced rotc students now undergoing basic training at replacement centers upon completion of their basic training will either be sent to ocs if vacancies are available or returned to college under the aus pices of the astp those returned to college will be given academic instruction to make them more useful officers in their branch their military in struction will continue during this period astp unit heads speak at convocation charles hilton . . . ... in canada's army plans have been made with the view of holding various other mu sicals throughout the year glee club concerts solo recitals and various popular band selections will be included in future pro grams the band is composed of about 50 members and is under the supervision of t edgar shields head of the department of music there have been a few similar musicals in the past a concert was held last september in the chapel and the band also played last baccalaureate sunday may 23 at the graduation exercises for the class of 1943 it has also been the custom to give a concert on sub - freshman day however sub freshman day has been can celled for the duration the affair is open to the public but will be given mainly for the army it is planned to hold the concert near the flagpole it will last for about an hour selections will include a few numbers from the operetta show boat by jerome kern a number from coppelia by delibes the suite by mozart a choice from the student prince overture by rudolph friml semper paratus coast guard march and numer ous popular marches the lehigh university band will hold its first band concert of the season on sunday afternoon aug 1 beginning at 3:30 p m omicron delta kappa senior society is sponsoring the sunday musical with the assistance of tone stu dent musical society to be held by flagpole ; will start at 3 p m open air concert set for sunday commenting by letter on an editorial in last week's issue of the brown and white president c c williams expressed doubt as to the necessity of adopting spe cialized courses in aeronautical en gineering at lehigh but admitted that the possible development of post-war aviation might prove im portant enough to influence the future policies of the university he stated however that the aero nautical engineering problem will be given further serious consider ation the text of the letter follows editor brown and white dear sir i am glad to comment on your editorial on aeronautical engineering in the brown and white of july 21 it is a for ward looking view aeronauti cal engineering is a rather highly specialized branch of engineering much of which may well be given at the graduate level early in this century a number of universi ties instituted specialized cur ricula in railway engineering and two decades later a num ber installed curricula in auto motive engineering when the automobile was rapidly devel oping i believe that all of the special railway engineering courses have been abandoned and many of the automotive engineering courses have fol lowed them whether special ized aeronautical engineering courses will be permanent or not one cannot at present foresee the basic engineering sciences are rather well in cluded in the main engineer ing curricula although there are specialized engineering curricula in divers regional industries in various colleges of the country civil aviation will doubtless show great de velopment following the war provided the sources of gas and oil prove adequate and your editorial raises a ques tion that will have to be more fully considered in the near the canadian engineers ocs on sunday july 25 a canadian citizen hilton was very active at lehigh during his stay here he was a member of cyanide secretary of the inter fraternity council a member of the 5-man committee to replace class officers and president of ar cadia student governing body hilton participated in many sports including freshman football and varsity hockey serving as cap tain of the latter he earned fresh man honors and was a member of phi eta sigma and newtonian he was president of phi gamma delta social fraternity in his senior year hilton has received his degree in met e even though he will not be able to finish the semester philip j berg m e 44x ex-vice president of arcadia will take hilton's place as leader of that group williams brabson stress preparedness both the military and civilian heads of the army training unit here at lehigh spoke to a group of over 700 soldiers sunday night at a convocation service in packer chapel on the campus colonel fay brabson comman dant explained to the trainees the purpose of their college work in engineering and language while dr c c williams president of lehigh delivered a message of the duties the obligations and the ideals of which the u s soldier should be mindful university chaplain dr claude beardslee led devotions and an nounced the benediction special music was furnished by pfc j k griffiths soloist and dr t eg gar shields at the organ brabson stresses training colonel brabson stressed the im portance of the training the men are receiving at lehigh and ex horted them to take it seriously the commanding officer asked the men to build themselves up phys ically to do well in the academic work and to keep a proper atti tude toward their work at all times colonel brabson stated that all of the trainees are potential officers and the call to service may come much sooner than ex pected president williams delivered a thoughtful talk to the soldiers prefacing his remarks with a wel come-to-lehigh note in which he said i hope that you will find your stay both pleasant and prof itable and that you will come to think of lehigh as your alma ma ter we want you to feel at home to participate in college
