lehigh university brown and white vol 93 - no 2:1 bethlehem pa tuesday novkmbkr 24 1981 215 861-4184 lafayette game passes without major incidents by maryellen connor the conduct of students at the lehigh lafayette game last weekend was the best it has been in 20 years according to william quay dean of students the goal posts were not torn down and there was not nearly as much pro caine drinking as in previous years quay said adding that the early start of the game helped to deter excessive drinking robert cohen associate dean of stu dents termed student deportment at the game terrific and a pleasant change from past years cohen said he was very pleased with how the security for ces and the social regulations imposed on the students seemed to have worked everyone behaved magnificently he said concern over game behavior by stu dents and administrators at bolh schools led to the hiring of 40 police compared to last year's 20 and 40 student guards compared to last year's 29 guards were instructed to keep people off the track surrounding the field as much as possi ble during the game and to check tickets to make sure people were in their correct sections in one of the biggest publicity cam paigns this semester the dean of stu dents office used posters and advertisements in the brown and white lo assure students that the rules would be enforced during the game and that the threats by trustees and administrators rom both schools that the series might be discontinued were real because behavior at saturday's game was good quay said he thinks there will be a tremendous amount of interest in maintaining the rules on the pari ol both schools administration dean of students herman kissiah of lafayette college agreed i thought student behavior was excel lent kissiah commented i think ihe new game conditions will be main tained i am confident they will be kissiah said that with the new rules he felt we have turned things around addingthat i think our students enjoyed themselves immensely and won't want to jeopardize future contests " quay expressed the feeling that in future years there will be fewer threats of the series cancellation i don't think you should threaten people when they've had a good track record he also said he would be in favor of maintaining the rules used this year including the early game lime in future matches 1 think what we did produced some results he said noting that it would be hard to isolate what aspect of this year's publicity and enforcement was responsi ble forthe improvement in behavior as for activity on the hill following saturday's game quay said there were a number of incidents and they have been turned over to the discipline com mittee yet with the volume of people participating in parties on the hill satur day night the problems occurring were proportionately small he added understanding the underlying princi ple behind new social regulations is the key to making them work quay said what was needed at the university was some kind of social control and most of that control he said is being enforced within the various living groups russian scholar provides insight on soviet system by peter misconceptions loffe said the soviet union does have extensive legislation with well developed and strict procedures for adopting laws loffe said however that the principles of the fundamentals of the civil law ithe upset thf final seconds see photos and stories p i and 8 choices for graduation speaker given to lewis fay maryellen connor a final list of choices for commence ment speakers was given to university president deming i_ewis following a meeting of senior class officers and al cooke 82 and andrew eckert 82 co chairmen of the commencement speaker committee prior to this meeting cooke and eck ert met with lewis and provost arthur humphrey to discuss a list consisting of six men and five women that had been compiled from surveys given to senior class members last semester according to cooke lewis decided a few of the original choices were not via ble and he and humphrey suggested speakers they thought would be approp riate for the university's commence ment . among ihe names added by lewis and humphrey were hannah gray presi dent of the university of chicago reg gie jones chairman of the board at general electric and joseph palladino director of the nuclear regulatory commission richard nixon and jane fonda were two choices vetoed by lewis cookesaid lewis said no to nixon because he does not want anyone to feel the univer sity supports what he did during his administration cooke said fonda was unacceptable because i_ewis does not approve of her anti attitudes cooke said other choices were discarded because lewis did not feel they were worthy of an honorary degree after meeting with lewis and humph rey and adding their suggestions to the original list cooke and eckert then met with officers of the class of 82 and together narrowed the list down to one consisting of four men and four women the list in order of speaker prefer ence was presented to i_ewis who will work on contacting the individuals none of the names on the final list can be made public until a speakerischosen cooke said because the list is numbered and we do not particularly want the speaker we are contacting to know he was our fifth or sixth choice if we have to go down that far on our list the original list was headed by alan alda followed by such personalities as jeorge bush gerald ford erma bom beck jane byrne nancy reagan and betty ford this list has since been revised and may include all or none of these names it is likely that the university will get one of the speakers on the current list cooke said the president is going to start asking from the top of the list he will use any contacts that he has with the top choice or he will call the number one choice personally cooke said , it may be some time before the univer sity knows who the speaker is it all depends on how quickly the person asked replies he said lewis cannot contact another choice until he hears a yes or a no from the person originally asked hopefully individuals will respond promptly he said see sovikts page 2 vacation because of the thanksgiv ing vacation the next issue of the brown and white will be on friday dec 4 the semester's last issue will appear on tuesday dec 8
