bethlehem pa tuesday april 27 1943 vol l no 50 price £ cents buy your m&c tickets tickets for bottoms up for the general public are on sale now at the arcadia office students may procure their reserved seats at any time if a student wishes a reserved seat he must pay 20 cents since he is entitled to a 65 cent ticket any way student tickets will be issued from wednesday 2 p m till satur day morning the prices are as follows reserved seats 85 cents downstairs on the wings 65 cents balcony 55 cents each student is entitled to one 65 cent ticket which he must secure before the night of the show no student tickets will be issued at the door bottoms up nears sell-out astp men may arrive in early june be here on june 5 1200 trainees might confidence that lehigh would receive a contingent of men in the army specialized training program early in june was ex pressed today by pres c c wil liams although the army seems to be moving very slowly in its distri bution of men for the astp pro gram dr williams pointed out that there were advantages in that the army can experiment with the contingents now in train ing so as not to make mistakes when the trainees are sent out in larger numbers although lehigh was queried on its ability to accommodate 1200 men in early june dr williams indicated that he had no assur ance that such a large number would be sent to the university the curricula set up for the army engineering specialists spe cifies three terms for basic men who will probably be the pre dominant group sent to lehigh the first 12 week period for the basic men will include 24 hours weekly 21 hours in class and 3 hours in laboratory classes will include mathematics 6 hours phy sics 7 chemistry 3 english 3 his tory 3 and geography 2 in the second and third 12-week periods more time will be spent on labor tory work in engineering drawing and physics and less time on eng lish history and mathematics in history classes emphasis will be placed on the american way of life suggested study in cludes the origins of american in stitutions a sound knowledge of the struggle for american unity the emergence of the united states as a world power and the various trends movements and events leading to the present world war geography classes to be taught jointly by the economics and geology departments will stress such phases as map-reading geo physics economic resources as re lated to climatic belts and geo graphic factors as they relate to relations between nations english classes will emphasize clear thinking concise writing correct punctuation and enuncia continued on page 6 trapp singers to close scl the may 7 concert will consist of early chorals madrigals and other festival-type songs includ ing folk songs mountain-call songs folk dances and yodels with hitler's invasion of aus tria the trapp family singing group left their homeland and sought refuge in the united states the trapp singers are composed of wife five daughters and two sons of baron george yon trapp each member of the family plays one or two instruments they are the first group to present eliza bethan block-flutes and wood winds of the 15th century in a public concert hibition of mass calisthenics by five of the companies a machine gun drill by first year advanced course infantry students and a demonstration of bayonet training the platoon drill was won by the third platoon of a company commanded by cadet lieutenant glenn a murray company hon ors went to company d com manded by cadet captain john j meehan winners of the individual drill competitions were freshman r d wallick first prize silver medal robert g ecob second prize bronze medal sophomore james f kleckner first jack c walter second one of the features was a mach ine gun demonstration in which a machine gun squad simulated the capture of a german rifle squad using blank ammunition and smoke grenades over 500 spectators turned out yesterday for lehigh's annual rotc field day and government inspection of the unit competitive individual platoon and company drills were staged followed by various military exhibitions and climaxing with a review and re treat parade company d and platoon from a company win more than 500 watch rotc in competitions bottoms up mustard and cheese's new musical review is well on the way to a sell-out for both friday and saturday nights performances announced albert rights director of dramatics stu dents who want tickets are urged to get them as soon as possible while they are still available the new revue will be the most elaborate production seen at le high in recent years trunk loads of costumes arrived from new york to be used in the various scenes outstanding are the mow rer's girls costumes which will be used in a fashion parade of 11 beautiful girls other scenes which are putting exceptionally attractive costumes to use are the cleopatra harem scene in which the costuming is rather brief the russian cossack uniforms and the outfits for the ballet dance are colorful and should attract much attention a novel presentation of the overture to the musical is being worked up by glenn williams met e 46 and hibbard gumpert jr arts 44 they will give var iations in classical and jazz wil liams will handle the accompani ment for the skits and gumpert will appear in one scene in a take-off on hazel scott all students can vote in election today preliminary balloting will narrow the field because the partially accelerated program at lehigh has disrupted classification the elections com mittee of arcadia has devised a new system of student representa tion in student government class officers will be replaced by a five man committee to be chosen by popular election these men will serve on arcadia and will be del egated with authority to handle matters formerly controlled by class officers all students eligible to vote since the former elections sys tem attracted a relatively small number of voters due to the in convenience of the polling place arcadia has arranged with the brown and white to print a spe cial sheet in this edition including pictures and activities of the can didates plus a complete ballot all students including the class of 1943 will vote for five men a total of three from the classes of 44 and 44x and a total of two from the classes of 45 and 45x the ballots will be turned over to the heads of the respective dorm sections and fraternities tonight ballots must be signed by the voter town and allentown men must vote in the arcadia room before 5 o'clock this afternoon the nature of the election re quires a large number of candi dates the purpose of today's ballot is to select the top fifteen men another ballot will be en closed in friday's brown and white to select the actual commit teemen since many men will be leav ing school in the near future it is necessary that the fifteen men be rated according to preference on the ballot and when a man leaves school he wil automatically be replaced by the next man in the order of balloting the high est man in order of voting will automatically be chairman of the committee part of this drill company competition and platoon drill were other highlights of the afternoon company d was chosen as the top company of the corps and the third platoon of company a took the platoon drill the cut at the right shows the first platoon of company d commanded by cadet lieutenant donald ryan arts 43 participating in this drill was incited by the mechanized movements of the cadets as they went through their paces a sham battle including machine gun drill and rifle fire was held which went over very well with the audi ence of over 500 persons following this was a bayonet drill consisting of the various fundamental thrusts and also the techniques of combating an opponent armed with a bayonet when you yourself are unarmed frank mc grath john dove and vince tomaselli are shown in a big doings on taylor field yesterday afternoon at the annual war department inspection of lehigh's r o t c unit beneath a blistering sun which left its mark on every student's face the companies paraded up and down the field to the music of the school band mass calisthenics were one of the main attractions of the program and a portion of the battalions taking part are shown in the picture to the left much amusement brown and white last flagpole day to be friday friday morning at 11:00 will be the traditional ceremony at the flagpole well-known and well remembered by upper classmen at the university flagpole day at this ceremony prizes will be awarded to outstanding scholars of the past year and cyanide and o d k will tap several outstanding juniors every student is urged to attend the ceremony in view of the fact that it may well be the last that will be held for the duration classes will be dismissed while the ceremony is in progress
