afternoon the fire located behind ihe kitchen's oven was extinguished by brothers by the time the fire trucks arrived no damage was done according to a sigma chi brother merchants map added to register by herb fischer the addition of merchants map and directory of south bethlehem businesses to next year's freshman register was dis cussed and blueprinted at the forum subcommittee on community relations last thursday the 10-page addition should incorpo rate a map and directors of businesses accompanied by a short statement according to john lynch 82 chairman of the subcommittee me said the addi tion will be financed by raising the price of the register by 25 cents the merchants committee of the south bethlehem coalition sbc coop erated with the subcommittee and told us where the businesses were from wyandotte to third and fourth streets up to five points ' lynch noted the sbc had funding difficulties as well as a staff turnover and had to scrap the project according to james harper of community relations who could not attend thursday's meeting he said forum is currently working nominally on the same project with the south bethlehem improvement committee the register's addition which will be similar to the yellow pages will be broken down into categories and will include locations and phone numbers while keying on the positive aspects ol south bethlehem lynch said the map will include such places in south bethle hem as pizza house wawa castro travel agency university laundromat hair inity and many others as well as the wine cellar and mo burgers on the north side lynch added the directory would exclude bars the subcommittee has sent letters to over 90 south bethlehem merchants requesting tree information about each business for the guide the information will appeartis a short statement com posed by stunents of the subcommittee eric neu 8:t a subcommittee members scouted south bethlehem and spotted important stores he is complet ing a coded map which depicts and labels the location of all south bethlehem busi nesses most seniors don't even know where some important stores are located he said especially since four orfive new a survey thai showed students needed things already in south bethlehem but didn't know about them because of the town's image both lynch and lyons indicated that a positive statement will be included announced 14 faculty promotions including nine to the rank of full professor effective august 24 1982 promoted to the rank of professor are the following raymond bell human development in education arthur brune civil engineering bob carson geological sciences mohamed el aasser chemical engineering steven kraweic biology leßoy tuscher administration and supervision in edu cation and kenneth sawyers center for the application of mathematics all six of these professors held tenure prior to their promotion ralph laccodine prolessor of metal lurgy and materials engineering and the sherman fairchild professor of solid state studies at the university was pro moted to the rank of full professor with tenure the following were promoted to the position of associate professor with tenure michael baylor history lan fergus english arthur king econom ics louis plebani jr . industrial engi neering and donald talhelm electrical and computer engineering norman girardot associate professor of religion studies was promoted to a tenured position committee conducts survey of social-alternative opinions ll kathy goldstein the faculty seems to he looking tn be cultural stimulated while students are looking more to he entertained accord ing to jim mahei r;t social and cultural alternatives subcommittee co chairman commenting on results of a university survey the report stated that ill percent of the university community wants more social and cultural alternatives and i7 percent wants an increased variety of alternatives to he offered matter indi cated that future social and cultural pro grams and activities will be guided by what the questionnaire's findings indicate students rated the spring carnival rock concerts and comedians the highest as alternatives while the faculty pre ferred the international festival dance troupes jazz concerts and opera maher added that the difference in choices maj he due to mobility faculty members who have cars can seek entertainment else here while students often cannot suggestions for alternatives included more major events instead of man small ones more publicity and advert is ing more alternatives on closed part weekends the hourglass moved to fri days on closed-party weekends more transportation to the valley and a college students also complained that thellm versity center is not a real student cen ter and suggested a better game room , student pub and a restaurant others said the uc should he open all night for studying since it is centrally located intramural program suggestions on subcommittee co-chairman diane goetz's report indicated that springgolf campus police investigating m & m assult university police are investigat ing the assault of a female univer sity student in her room in mcclintic-marshall mouse early sunday morning according to uni versity police chief rugene dax the attack was not sexual he said ' campus police have positively identified suspects who were in the area at the time of the assault and are investigating all leads " dax said officer mark diluzio is working full time on the ease he added dax would not release any other details hut said more
