review committee meeting yesterday voted to allow the showing of midnight express this evening and tomorrow evening by the student activities council the committee did make a provision that turkish students and faculty mem bers — who protested the film's showing will be able to distribute a one or two page statement expressing their view that the film is racist in that it portrays turks in an unfair way in arguments before the committee three turkish students argued that the film distorted facts and would create hatred and prejudice against the turkish nation members of the students activities council including president laura shrier argued that the film would not create such hatred in viewers further schrier said freedom of ex pression is a privilege and argued that cancelling the film would be unfair censor ship a group of 28 foreign students 22 of whom are turkish has requested the cancellation of this week's student ac tivities council sac film midnight express calling it racist and anti human in a petition directed last thursday to william quay dean of students the students denounced the film as black propanganda and claimed an at mosphere of hatred against turkey would result if the movie were shown the movie which claims to be based on fact tells the story of a young american man's incarceration in a turkish prison after being caught during his attempt to smuggle drugs out of the country the committee which is composed of four faculty members four students and quay is responsible for handling all student faculty and group complaints about on-campus cultural and social events erdal unver spokesman for the petitioning students said the unflattering and often violent portrayal of the turks in the movie make turkish people appear as villains and stupid creatures unver said he fears that an audience using the movie as their only source of information two faculty members tour european holocaust sites by kathy mangan next to an old jewish cemetery in warsaw is an overgrown field where the bodies of 150,000 jews were dumped without even a simple marker at babi yar outside kiev ussr the stone marker says more than 100,000 citizens of kiev lie beneath the ravine the marker does not acknowledge that the people mur dered in that ravine were killed merely because they were jewish roy eckardt chairman of the religion department explained many people don't even know about it eckardt said and the people who know are the people responsible or are not around anymore eckardt and his wife alice partici pated in a two-week study mission this summer as special consultants to the president's commission on the holocaust which was the nazi an nihilation of six million jews the couple was asked to join the group because jewish-christian relations is their professional specialty mrs eckardt teaches a course on the holocaust at the university the mission went to poland the ussr denmark and israel visiting memorials death camps and religious places and speaking to government officials to gain more information materials and insight into the holocaust the trip's fundamental purpose was to get polish and soviet officials to make available certain documents and archive materials never available before eckardt said most officials were willing to share materials he said adding that the poles were more willing to talk than the russians for the group of 58 people from various walks of life u wa aa im portant psychological experience to visit the death camps of auchwitz berkinau and treblinka it was an unforge table experience eckardt said mrs eckardt said that she expected more of an impact from auchwitz but she explained that since they were an official group they were rushed through and weren't given a chance to stop and digest the courage of the 12 death-camp survivors with the group is what made the biggest impression on mrs eckardt she said some of them didn't talk at all but the pain one student finds some peace and quiet between christmas saucon and the philosophy building to get some work done wrestler denied club sponsorship by steve homcy the new york athletic club nyac sponsored several lehigh wrestlers competing in the april aau tournament at ames lowa the club paid their way and the points accrued by the athletes helped the club win its fourth straight team title but darryl burley an ncaa national champion as a freshman last year was not sponsored by the club in that competition and wrestled unattached burley is black and the policy of the ny ac does not allow blacks to officially compete for them neither burley wrestling coach thad turner nor the university was aware of this policy the ny ac has been sponsoring lehigh wrestlers in independent other than ncaa tournaments since 1958 according to turner we never ran into this situation before he said the first signal that we had of the policy was the times article said preston parr dean and vice president of student affairs the article he was referring to was a column written by sportswriter jack mccallum published in the bethlehem globe-times on june 16 nobody wanted the issue publicized least of all darryl burley mccallum wrote i'm not worried about myself burley was quoted as saying but i'm afraid of what this will do to other people contacted tuesday burley declined to elaborate further burley is concerned that the club will be less willing to sponsor lehigh wrestlers in future competitions however parr has a different concern when the article was brought to my attention i thought a campus expression was appropriate he said so i wrote this letter the letter was addressed to members of the lehigh community 1 and explained that the nyac policy was incompatible with lehigh's own policy of equal oppor tunity parr sent another letter to the nyac expressing his disapproval he also asked the coaching staff to withhold any cooper ation with the club what i said here pan explained was that we're not going to cooperate with you the nyac . . and indeed if one of the students says that they have an invitation from the nyac i'm asking the coaches to say to him you should know that this is their policy coach turner said that it is up to the individual whether or not he wants to wrestle under the club's sponsorship the tournaments they sponsor wrestlers to are off mason tournaments turner said back when we first started sending wrestlers to these competitions a club like this was the only way we could finance their expenses he explained now we have funds we can use turner cited receipts from the wrestle off s and alumni contributions as sources of funds for this purpose • he also pointed out that the nyac if not standing still or moving backwards in its policy a few years ago the nyac did not allow any foreigners to compete for them and now they do he said they are changing but the change is slow parr commented that he hope the club will modify their
