lehigh university brown and white extra extra bethlehem pa wednesday december iz ivtt 21s-ml-41m vol tl — no n lehigh in iaa final engineer quarterback and offensive player of the-game rich andres lofting a flare pass in the direction of f u llback mike ford 35 hi saturday's action verses murray state andres engineers gridders to 28-9 triumph by jeff aronson somewhere during the month of december murray state forgot there was a division i-aa semifinal game before the championship in the tangerine bowl reservations to orlando were booked daily and finals were moved ahead one week to accommodate the football team and students looking forward to sunshine and glory what they did not remember was the least scored upon team in division i-aa . what they did not expect was an explosive offense which would shred their nationally second ranked defense in the air and on the ground rich andres quarterbacked the engineers to 380 yards of total offense and dazzled the partisan kentucky crowd with his finest performance of the season as the engineers stunned murray state 28-9 to earn a spot in the sunshine dec 15 lehigh will take on ohio valley conference runner-up eastern kentucky who edged out nevada-reno 33-30 in double overtime in the pioneer bowl saturday andres picked apart the murray state secondary throughout the game completing eight of 13 passes for 114 yards and one touchdown engineer coach john whitehead said rich did a nice job of ca 1 ling the plays . hie big thing was to keep them off balance we thought let's stay close and we'll have a chance " andres said the engineers knew how they wanted to attack the murray state defense but was surprised at the they play a wide tackle six and we wanted to run right at them right up the middle we also wanted to hit the flats we figured we could i didn't know if we could score this many points things just worked out he said andres play selection kept the engineer offense moving all afternoon but it was most evident during the third quarter drive which locked up the victory starting at their own 25 yard line lehigh moved 75 yards in 12 plays to in crease their lead to 21-9 after jeff bernstein opened the drive with a three yard run to the right andres took the ball left for nine yards and a first down once again bernstein got the call this time taking a reverse to the left over tackle joe scheuer for two more the engineers then exploded with vince rogusky pop ping up the middle for seven bernstein sweeping left for 10 and andres throwing 11 yards to mark yeager at the murray 33 two more runs and a face mask penalty put the ball at the nine where andres called the final play of the drive according to andres the pass called in the huddle was designed for tight end dave rarig but rarig was tied up in the end zone andres eluded a murray state end rolled left and hit yeager in the back of the end zone locking up the game and most valuable player award the four and a half minute drive was perhaps the most impressive of the season whitehead said rich called all the plays on the drive it was a good one for him we feh we could control the ball and we gave them one look they ■- didn't expect our backs ran hard bernstein was the most successful back for the engineers coming through with his most productive running game of the season with 80 yards on 11 carries he broke through the murray six-man line for gains of 16 27 and 10 yards helping to set up two touchdowns i haven't played i-back all year and i could see the holes a lot better they got confused and sometimes didn't know what was going on the coaches really prepared us bernstein replaced joe rabuck who suffered a hip pointer after gaining 42 yards and scoring a touchdown the engineers were stopped early in the game on a drive which appeared to be heading toward the first score of the game a 27-yard pass from andres to yeager put the ball on the murray four-yard line but after three runs up the middle the engineers were still at the one ted lobst at tempted a 19-yard field goal but all american safety terry love blocked his sixth kick of the year to end the threat i felt the drive was good but we were a little upset at the time we were going to try for three points since we thought a field goals would be beneficial at the time i thought we should have scored whitehead said although rabuck was stopped short in the first quarter he scored easily on a similar play in the second after andres hit romeo coming out of the backfieki for 25 yards down to the one rabuck plowed through the heart of the pour minutes later an engineer drive resulted in touch sec defense page c
