garment workers union ilgwu to boycott cotrell and leonard inc a manufacturer of academic caps and gowns the university will continue to honor our contract with cotrell and leonard according to austin gavin executive consultant to the president workers of the albany new york-based firm have been on strike since aug 8 protesting unfair labor practices since they walked off their jobs other non-union workers have taken their places and caps and gowns ate continuing to be manufactured the original employees and the ilgwu have issued a formal complaint to the national labor relations board citing the company for threatening to close the factory should the employees choose to be represented by the union interrogating employees on their thoughts about the union keeping union activities under surveillance threatening that employees who were on strike would not be allowed to return to work and stating that no suspected union sympathizers would be hired meanwhile the employees and the union have asked colleges and universities which are customers of cotrell and leonard to boycott its products so far the ilgwu claims as many as 80 percent of the colleges and universities in the area have boycotted no exact number was given the university will not participate in the boycott gavin said the decision was made by gavin university president deming lewis and david lewis professor of modern languages and chairman of forum x why should we try to settle the dispute gavin asked pointing out that it is up to the nlrb to decide whether or not the workers have a case a court will make a decision based on witnesses testimony and a full legal procedure he said we don't know the full story it is not for us to judge them gavin added that the university has had a contract with cotrell and leonard since last february michael winston a representative of the ilgwu said there are two clauses in the contract which would allow the university to pull out of the contract the first is that no charge will be made for outfits canceled 28 days before delivery and the second is that the contract is void if the company is unable to ship the outfits he said adding that truckers are not crossing the picket lines gavin is playing a game by pretending you have a moral obligation winston said while dealing with a company that has no moral regard for its workers gavin disagreed with winston's inter pretation of the contract the first clause he said refers to a small change in order for a student who is not graduating or for a late request it does not refer to changing companies as for the second clause gavin said that cotrell and leonard has guaranteed shipment of the caps and gowns winston said he told gavin that boston university joined the boycott because their order was not shipped on time but gavin said an employee of boston university called to say the order mixup was entirely her fault and not cotrell and leonard's this is not the only time the ilgwu has not presented the
