lehigh university brown and white voi m - no 4 zl5-m54331 rkthlehem pa tuesday september 12 19w complete overhaul planned for university telephones by lee ann lusardi a major overhaul of the university's telephone system will be completed by june 29 according to thomas verbonitz director of administrative and personnel services the new phone system dimension 2000 is expected to streamline university phone communications presently the university utilizes the 25-year-old pbx 701 system which is fast becoming obsolete and is inadequate for the university's needs verbonitz said some features of dimension 2000 incoming calls will be able to reach specific extensions without operator assistance users will be able to place a long distance call without operator assistance the present phone system is time-con suming and confusing verbonitz ex group may seek lewis successor by jim donahue the university board of trustees will vote on a proposal to establish a standing succession committee at its october meeting according to austin gavin executive consultant to the president the succession committee will be responsible for setting up procedures to find a replacement for university . resident deming lewis who retires june 30 1960 the succession committee could ap point a separate search committee or could do the job itself according to gavin a standing succession committee was proposed at the board of trustees june 2 meeting gavin said the board must change its bylaws to form a standing committee he explained a bylaw change must be proposed at one meeting and then voted on at the next meeting gavin continued wm ■harold mohler president of the board of trustees has said the succession com mittee would have four or more members according to gavin the size of the com mittee is not specified m the official description of the committee all members of the succession committee will be members of the board of trustees gavin said if ihe proposed search committee is adopted by the board it will then decide how much student and faculty input there will be m the search for a new president mohler has told lewis it is his ex pectation that the faculty will be con suited by the succession committee m connection with the development of its plans for the search for the next president and the faculty wiii be very much involved m the search gavin said the succession committee will have about nine months from its in ception to decide on procedures for the search it would probably take about nine months to a year to find a suitable can didate so the search for new president should begin around next june he ex plained the succession committee will also consult with the president about his plans to appoint people to the positions of dean or above gavin said currently there is a search committee seeking a replacement for john karakssfc dean of the couege of engtoartag aad physical sciences who will retire is june mm ii roi.d mohler inside new emphasized that this is high priority gavin said he added that lewis said the equal opportunity officers should drop lower priority respon sibilities m favor of equal opportunity concerns when necessary on the same day lewis sent out a memo announcing his plan to decentralize responsibility for equal opportunity concerns at tbe university the memo also stated the university will not hire a full time equal opportunity officer the memo appointed preston parr vice president and dean of student affairs as equal opportunity officer for students richard spriggs vice president for ad ministration equal opportunity officer for professional and support staff and gavin as equal opportunity officer for the faculty the four equal opportunity liaison of ficers appointed are norman melchert assistant dean of the college of arts and science brian brockway former dean of the college of business and economics curtis gump dean of the college of engineering and physical sciences and perry zirkel dean of the school of education prior to release of the memo leonard wenzel forum chairman and chairman of the chemical engineering department expressed concern that the officers might not have time for their equal opportunity responsibilities following the aug 25 meeting with the three equal opportunity officers and four liaison officers lewis met with the liaison officers and other deans to discuss how to get organized to get the job done ac cording to gavin the liaison officers then met with the department chairmen to discuss equal opportunity concerns within each college
