questioned the proposals put forth recently by the forum evaluation committee at the september forum meeting the committee made a series of suggestions for improving the forum based on a year-long study both l«eonard wenzel forum chairman and larry weitzner 79 chairman of the forum's academic environment com mittee agreed with the evaluation committee that most students and faculty do not take the forum seriously both disagreed with the committee on how to improve the situation wenze charged that reorganization of the forum one of the evaluation com mittee's suggestions will not improve the situation of governance at the university he said he thinks that the forum needs more respect from the university community if it is to become more effective weitzner agreed with the committee that some sort of reorganization was necessary he said he was disappointed that the evaluation committee really gave no specific suggestions robert sarubbi professor of mechanics and chairman of the evaluation com mittee explained that reorganization is the kind of thing that deserves rather intensive study and discussion the evaluation committee report proposed that another committee be established to study specific proposals for reorganization another of the committee's proposals was to reduce the size of the forum wenzel noted there is already too little faculty involvement we cannot cut the forum's membership and expect to solve this weitzner said he felt that if the forum's size was decreased its ability to function would also decrease he said he thought that if there were fewer student representatives on the forum the spring elections would turn into a popularity contest with fewer qualified candidates being elected according to sarubbi the committee report proposed a smaller forum because if indeed the forum is operating as if a few interested people are doing the work its size should be reduced he added that employe rapport to be emphasized by service office bykimcaldwell the newly formed administrative and personnel services office is part of the administration's increased emphasis on employe relations according to thomas verbonitz director of the office this shift in emphasis resulted from university technicians and secretaries considering unionization he explained the support staff has taken the of fensive by bringing up problems at meetings and writing letters to the new office verbonitz said in the past they were very patient now they feel they've been patient long enough he commented until two months ago personnel was a separate office and employe com munications took a back seat to ad ministrative duties according to ver bonitz by combining the personnel office with the administrative service office communications particularly with support staff secretaries technicians and paraprofessionals became top priority verbonitz said inconsistent policies between departments on such matter as vacation and coffee break time caused resentment among employes the situation worsened because many em ployes are too intimidated to call per sonnel for information about job descriptions or salary levels he explained as an example verbonitz said many employes believe the administrative and personnel services office decides what job level each position should be actually this decision is made by the individual departments hopefully this situation can be corrected by making the new office more accessible and by strengthening the employe advisory committee verbonitz said verbonitz said he hopes the new office will avoid the need for unionization by the support staff we'd prefer to talk to employes face-to face rather than to a union representative verbonitz com mented in addition collective bargaining would be time consuming and costly verbonitz said because an additional staff member would probably have to be hired to handle union relations plucked halfback vince rogusky heads into the end zone to give the gridders a 17-0 lead over delaware on saturday the rlue hens tied the game but a sparkling catch by sieve kreider in ihe final minutes gave the engineers the victory see story page is ford president
