personnel competitive by comparable jobs with other comparable institutions m the appropriate labor market it is further recommended that we proceed on the basis of the compensation adjustment program outlined herein to attain the above revised compensation objectives within the next two or three years provided this can be done wittwut seriously jeopardizing the university's financial budgets or educational programs according to a comparative analysis accompanying the reports university students are paying on the average 320 less for tuition than students at 11 other private colleges m the comparison the by jerry miller creasing faculty salaries and 320,000 far professional and support staffs according to the report to the board according to the report 420,000 could come from an additional tuition increase of approximately 100 spread over the required two or three years any such tuition increase would of course be on top of the increase required by inflation to meet the university's other needs the remaining 400,000 the report proposes may possibly be secured from a revised investment strategy for our endowment the compensation increase will probably be spread over three years according to the report the brown and white has learned that the board approved a preliminary plan which would institute 50 percent of the increases one year with the remaining 50 percent divided between the next two years approved at the meeting were the following compensation objectives for the university lehigh university is committed to making every effort consistent with sound financial management to attain and then maintain the following levels of average compensation : for faculty the average com pensation by appropriate disciplinary field and be rank of the following universities boston university carnegie-mellon cornell duke mit perm state prin ceton rpi rutgers stevens tufts pennsylvania university of rochester and university of virginia for professional personnel who are not members of the faculty adjusted to a level comparable to that of the faculty the university board of trustees meeting friday reacted favorably to a report recommending an 820,000 one-time boost to faculty professional and support staff compensation the brown and white has learned the plan could result m an additional 100 tuition increase to help cover the pay raises the 100 hike would be added to the u_.ua i adjustment made for inflation which amounted to a 305 tuition increase for the 1978-79 school year thus should the university decide to finance part of the compensation package through tuition next year's tuition could be 4,535 designed to bring university com pensation levels up to those of schools the university compared itself with the package would provide 500,000 for m wet parents arriving early for saturday's football game spent the rest of ih lav trying tv dry out — or at least forget the soggy three hours at taylor stadium the team was we need 350,000 more to completely finance it this amounts to nine per cent of the arena's total coat the arena expected to cost 3.7 million has been regularly receiving donations from alumni and trustees it is slated for completion m may however franz said toward the end of construction we may not have enough money to cover its total coots but he added i don't expect to have to take out hank loans for this according to university treasurer john woltjen we would take operating funds from the university budget to cover the arena's coat he said that measure would be only temporary until the development office raised the remaining funds university trustee frank ha bold vice chairman of the priorities planning and development committee said we have . no worry about getting the remaining funds the money is coming m all the time the university however has not raised any funds for the operational expenses of the arena expected to be between 100,00 and 200,000 a year outside groups we hope to cover the operating costs of the arena through its leasing arrangements with outside groups eric ottervik vice president for planning said he added that the heating of the arena would cost about 40,000 last september members of the forum suggested the university delay the arena project until operational expenses were raised by a special endowment preston parr vice president and dean of students affairs is m charge of scheduling the use of the arena with community groups he said until we have the building completed we are not making any firm commitments to other groups he indicated that some prospective lessees have expressed interest m using the arena but would not reveal their names we haven't made any policies see perspective page s former chairmen against decreasing size of forum by john gabuzda four former forum chairmen have expressed the belief that reduction m forum membership would not have a positive influence on the effectiveness of that body the forum's evaluation committee last month proposed that the size of the forum be reduced university chaplain hubert flesher chairman of forum iv explained that reducing the size of the forum with the intention of eliminating members who do little work also might reduce the number of people with leadership potential size is the wrong problem to look at he said cutting the forum's size doesn't help raise issues or eliminate people not active on the forum david amidon professor of urban studies and forum vii chairman con curred i predict confidently that whether or not the forum is reduced m size will not make a great impact on the forum he said expressing the same sentiment was george dinsmore professor of civil engin eering and chairman of forum 111 it's really not going to make much difference operationally the problem is getting enough people to work he said curtis clump associate dean of the college of engineering and physical sciences was chairman during the first evaluation of forum 11 the question of reducing the forum's size was raised then at that time the feeling was that the forum hadn't yet received the confidence of the campus he explained that it was thought the forum should maintain its size until it established itself clump said i suspect that the same rationale might be valid today " he said he believes the forum lias not yet reached a comfortable degree of confidence clump asserted it is not wise to put the responsibilities of the forum on a smaller group than now exists he added that reduction m size may constitute a reassessment of its constitutional prerogatives unreal expectatkats on the subject of student and faculty dis satisfaction with the forum dinsmore pointed out part of the problem is unreal expectation about whet the fonsn ess
