magnus resigns goes on active army duty gerhard magnus instructor in english has been drafted and has resigned from the university to go on active duty with the army he had been at the university for the past semester coming to le high from newspaper work if council asks dean to permit open houses sonny dunham and les brown are the orchestras being consider ed as the main bands for inter fratenrity ball which will be held on march 6 announced thomas m buck m e 43 president of the interfraternity council in a poll which was taken by the council the fraternities show ed a tie vote between dunham and brown and it is just a matter of days before the final contracts will be signed both bands are a bands and are well-established throughout the country either one should provide the type of music that most lehigh men fa vor an attempt is being made by the interfraternity council to get the permission of the dean to al low dates to sleep in the frater nity houses on saturday night of the ball in a careful check of ho tels and rooming houses it was found that there is no more avail able room in the desirable loca tions decision expected soon due therefore to the great transportation problem at present it was deemed wise by the council to make its suggestion to the dean the problem is being brought up before the student activities com mittee and a decision should be reached shortly sonny dunham and his orches tra played at lehigh for the en gineer's ball on oct 4 1941 with much success dunham is partic ularly well known for his versa tility on the trumpet and the trombone he was selected by the warner brothers studio as the most promising band of 1941 beginning his musical educa tion in grammar school dunham became proficient on the trom bone and appeared as soloist at several concerts in his home town he did not start his work on the trumpet until he became a profes sional musician when dunham was here in 1941 he brought with him his famous sixteen year old tenor saxaphonist corky cor coran brown began at duke les brown started his climb towards the top in 1937 when he formed a small collegiate band at duke university in north caro lina his first engagement was in budd lake n j but since that time his band has increased con siderably in size and in impor tance brown plays a good clarinet and was very popular this past sum mer at the hotel astor in new york it has been during the past year that brown has come to be one of the top orchestras in the country he has been touring the theatres throughout the country in the last month dunham is currently appearing at the hotel new yorker in new york and has recently acquired the services of lovely dorothy claire as his vocalist as announced previously inter fraternity ball will be an informal affair lehigh to be used to train army men among 281 other institutions selected lehigh is among 281 colleges and universities chosen for the training of army and navy person nel by the joint committee for the selection of non-federal edu cational institutions the date set for the time that actual contracts will be sent out will not be announced until the future but the colleges are being notified as to what branch of the service they will be called upon to accommodate lehigh will train men in engineering for the army as will carnegie tech drexel lafayette perm state pennsylvania pittsburgh villan ova yale texas a and m cor nell harvard m i t and many others contracts in spring it is the opinion of president williams that the school will be given contracts to start work with the army men sometime in the spring until that time the uni versity will not be directly affect ed by the proposed program training for army aviation cadets in pennsylvania will be given at albright allegheny dickinson geneva gettysburg grove city lafayette st vincent pittsburgh and washington and jefferson a good many smaller colleges will be utilized by the air corps too others train navy men plans are also being made for the training of engineers for the navy these men will be trained at bucknell carnegie tech perm state swarthmore and pennsyl vania in this state and at cal tech georgia tech yale north western etc the committee plans to approve other institutions in the near fu ture and in some cases it was announced additional training programs will be given to insti tutions already approved new freshmen must attend smoker feb 11 the group of most recently enrolled freshmen classed as 1947 m are required to attend a smoker at 7:15 p m thurs day feb 11 in the drown hall lounge hugh boyd m e 44 cyanide president an nounced sunday night the program boyd said will take about one hour and will comprise short student talks on campus activities and a longer speech by capt sam uel s pierce professor of miltary science and tactics long to speak to chemists three juniors and one senior who needed but six more semester hours for graduation the privates will assemble in union railroad station at 7:15 o'clock wednesday morning feb 17 and with a transportation or der for the reading railroad will proceed to fort meade under the direction of lloyd e antonides e m 45 e kenneth smiley director of admissions presiding at a meet ing of the group sunday morning in drown hall in place of dean congdon who was ill explained that according to a new order re ceived from the army mining metallurgical and probably indus trial engineers will also be subject to active duty under these and further orders of the 95 students called six sophomores were in this category r.o.t.c will be deferred the orders also included pos sible errors in the inclusion of four advanced r.o.t.c men and an engineering physicist profes sor smiley explained howevter that these men will not go with the group to the reception center unless dean congdon receives in structions from col butcher head of the third service command to send them on others on the list are to follow the orders without exception anyone who has applied for the meteorological service is instruct ed by professor smiley to contact weather at the university of chicago as soon as he reaches fort meade these students will then be taken out of the group and will be given special training the univerity will give each student pro rata credits towards his graduation for the work com pleted this semester and will re fund the balance of the money paid at registration this will be approximatelya tely fiifteenth-six teenths of the amount professor smiley announced must have transcripts the registrar's office will this week prepare the individual trans scripts of the students academic records these must be present ed to the classification officer upon arrival at fort meade most of the men will leave from bethle hem revamped football team is scheduled to re port for active duty with the army today he has been com missioned a ist lieutenant and will be stationed at fort eustis va ekaitis came to lehigh from washington college in maryland where he was head football and track coach from 1931 until 1942 he starred in football at western maryland where he was coached by dick harlow ex-harvard men tor ekaitis went straight from the western maryland campus to washington he was greatly responsible for the engineers crack backfield and the late coach hoban gave him much credit for the team's suc cess ekaitis also generously gave his services to the bethlehem boys club where he was teach ing the youngsters the art of self defense until recently he was coaching the j.v basketball squad dr james scott long chemical director of devoe and reynolds and former professor at lehigh will speak to the lehigh valley chemical society at its meeting in the chemistry building at 8:15 p m friday his topic will be the effect of the war on paint formulation student members of the society will be welcome dr long's name should t>e very familiar to lehigh students since he is the co-author of two books used here in freshman chemistry he received his chem e here in 1913 an m s in 1915 and ob tained a ph d at johns hopkins in 1921 he began work here as an assistant in chemistry the year after he graduated and by 1927 he was a professor which posi tion he held until he left in 1934 he is a member of tau beta pi and sigma xi honorary fraterni ties dr earl l crum head of the department of greek will speak on greek and roman coins at at a dinner to be held in lamber ton hall at 6:30 immediately pre ceding the meeting the admis sion will be one dollar pre-meds to take test on feb 12 a medical aptitude test will be given to all pre-medical students on february 12 at three in the afternoon this test has been given in the past by some medical schools as a means for determin ing admission but this year it is possible that the army will use the results of the test as a means for determining the deferment of pre-medical students the test is prepared by a com mittee of the session of the ameri can medical colleges and the grades will be determined by this same committee all students claiming any pre-medical work are advised to take this test so that any question regarding their status in the draft may only feminine research worker will probabry be the first of a large number of women scientists to invade the campus as the armed forces and de fense industries are gobbling up almost all male students immedi ately after graduation university officials believe that the only way to keep the present research pro gram going is to bring more and more women into the laboratories one of the very few women ever to receive an industrial fel out a career in chemistry ever since her student days at allen town high she was probably in spired at least in part by her father a chemical engineer at the trojan munitions plant she hopes to do most of her work in the field of biological chemistry a perm state graduate major ing in agricultural and biological chemistry miss lams received her bachelor of
