mangan after receiving unanimous support from the biology department and the dean of the college of arts and science david bell assistant professor of biology was denied tenure last spring the decision came from university provost albert zettlemoyer who m consultation with deming lewis i'niversity president decides who should be recommended to the board of trustees for tenure according to the faculty procedures rules and regulations the provost and president must concur with the decisions of the faculty except for compelling reasons bell had unanimous support from his department and dean bell received no reason for the tenure denials which carries with it termination of employment after one year however according to zettlemoyer the faculty recently passed a rule requiring a statement of reasons m the letter of con tract termination however the reasons wiil have to be broad zettlemoyer said we can't get into details in an interview with the brown and white last week bell outlined his ex perience with the tenure process zet tlemoyer refused to comment on the case tenure supports a teacher's right to teach what he perceives to be the truth without fear of economic or political reprisals a human system it has its imperfections according to a 1975 forum report on tenure all non-tenured faculty members are reviewed annually by the tenured mem bers of their department and by their sixth year at the latest are considered for promotion the teachers are judged on their teaching ability service to the university and their scholarly work bell said he was ranked very highly on the first two requirements bell also said his scholarly work as insofar his field ranks well because he serves on about a dozen ph.d committees on biology psychology and education generating grant money is also con sidered m decisions on tenure not because it brings m money saul barber biology department chairman said but because it constitutes recognition by his peers as good work if the research gets funded it gets reviewed which indicates that the work m the grant proposal is potentially meritorious he added that some things are more easily funded depending on many variables including the right connections and the type of research involved bell is co-principal investigator of a 19,000 grant for freshwater research which he supervised he is also a par ticipant m a national science foundation grant of 350,000 with seven other faculty members to design computer uiuueis for teaching scholarly work also includes a teacher's publications bell admitted that he is low m this admission will be 1 according to schrier the sac would like to have one more lecture this emester if the money holds out bylaws change supports forum censure proposal by jim donahue the forum will begin making preparations for the censure of some of its members at today's meeting according to mike silverman 79 forum vice chair man a bylaw change will be introduced that will establish procedures for replacing forum members during mid-term he said next month the forum could censure approximately five to eight students and 10 faculty members silverman explained the bylaw change will allow for the replacement nf those forum members no definite criteria for censure has been set but members whe have not attended any meetings are m trouble silverman said a full discussion of the censure procedure will take place at the steering committee meeting on nov 21 the forum also will vote on a resolution by the academic environment committee calling for the discontinuance of the add drop fee if passed the resolution will eliminate the fee for next semester a third resolution calling for ad ministration accountability for tuition increases will be presented by forum members mary tarduno 79 and janet dezube 80 tarduno said this resolution will ask the administration to give students and their families specific reasons for tuition increases as well as a breakdown of how tuition money is spent in addition the resolution asks that the administration inform students faculty and staff of where the university's money conies from and how it is spent if passed the administration will have to report to the forum by next february on its progress m complying with the resolution tarduno said the administration will make two reports silverman said the first will concern campus lighting and the second will outline progress on the renovations m the university center business minor replaced by arts-m.b.a program by peter schilling the fundamentals of business minor wiii no longer be offered by the couege of arts and science beginning next year ac cording to associate dean mark ellis students currently enrolled m the minor will not be affected by the decision ellis emphasized the business minor was originally designed to expose arts students to business courses however many students m the program spent two years m the arts college and then transferred to business eilis said the decision to drop the minor was made partly to eliminate overcrowding m the business college and partly because the old program didn't provide what we thought it would m terms of a ba degree he said ellis explained that unless students specifically mentioned their business minor m job interviews it often went unnoticed this is because employers are accustomed to the 15 credit-hour minors offered at other schools the university's business minor however required 37 credit hours which is more than a major at many other schools eliminating the minor will eliminate this confusion of terminology ellis com mented the business minor will be replaced by a five-year arts-masters of business ad ministration mba program which was previously offered but was buried m the catalog ellis said the five-year program requires 40 credit hours and still allows a student to complete an mba at the university m one year which is half the time of many programs the decision to drop the business minor was instituted by the arts couege policy committee because the five year arts mba program was already listed m the catalogue no other faculty action was needed see tenure page t inside women's
