lehigh university brown and white vol so - no.^fr bethlehem pa friday november 17 1978 â– â– â– â– forum passes resolution to eliminate add-drop fee by jim donahue the forum tuesday adopted a resolution to abolish the add-drop penalty by sept 1 1979 an amendment by university president deming lewis to make the resolution a recommendation was defeated 40-29 the forum split along student-faculty lines with only six faculty voting against the amendment and one student voting for it lewis argued that although the forum has the power to set policy for registration it does not have the power to establish the size of fees the forum only has the power to make advisory recommendations on budgetary matters lewis promised the recommendation would receive prompt attention by the administration he added that he was very sympathetic to the feeling that the add-drop fee should h disron.jnijpd but lewis said he could not support the resolution without his amendment because it overstepped forum authority larry weitzner 79 chairman of the academic environment committee which drafted the resolution said the add-drop fee is a policy of the registrar's office the intent of the fee is to deter useless add drops not to supplement the budget nor is it a legitimate users fee since it is used by three-quarters of the students every semester weitzner said last week the university netted 22,680 from add-drop fees last year however the fee was doubled this year from 10 to 20 the amendment is a question of forum power weitzner said i cannot see us ( the forum allowing our powers to be diluted once again he added supporting lewis amendment william quay dean of students said if we are to apply budgetary questions to one area of academic environment that the forum has policy making power m i think it necessarily implies that we might apply budgetary questions to other areas buildings and grounds the library the computer and so on i think this resolution would create an awful lot of havoc with regard to our budgetary planning quay continued the forum's involvement m financial issues will upset the board of trustees he said quay added that lewis could ask the board of trustees to overrule the forum if his amendment was not passed only three times m the pa_t nine years has the administration disagreed with the athletic boosters to defray costs of team recruiting by linda pickens an athletic booster club currently being organized by two alumni will solicit contributions to defray recruiting ex penses for football wrestling and basketball according to john brzyski 73 who is organizing the club with richard gasdaska 50 the club to be known as the engineer athletic club has already received pledges of almost 1,000 papers are being filed m harrisburg to obtain tax-exempt status for the non-profit group brzyski said donations to the engineer athletic club however will not be tax-exempt because the group is not managed by the univer sity contributors will be and a local geology buff are finding out that some mighty big animals were taking tracks amid the lehigh valley area some 200 million years ago more than 100 dinosaur tracks have been uncovered recently at a site near coopersburg according to james turner the bethlehem free-lance researcher writer who found the site the tracks show that as many as six or seven different species of dinosaurs stalked the area the find is the first of its kind m lehigh county turner said m a press conference held at the site monday workers at the site have found a variety of prints in cluding those of what may be the first pennsylvania-found tracks of a phy tosaur rutiodon a crocodile-like creature turner who holds a college degree m geology discovered the site seven months ago while on a personal search for fossil sites when i simply brushed the dirt away from a piece of bedrock 1 found what i believed to be a dinosaur print turner recalled the geology hobbiest brought specimen tracks of his finding to the university requesting volunteer to help dig the site university graduate student michael clinch heads the volunteer group of students and faculty who work at the site almost daily the researchers have determined that the prints are most likely those belonging to animals living during the triassic period this period marks the beginning of the great dinosaur age the animals whose tracks range from mouse-size to those of a 30-foot dinosaur were more primitive creatures between five and ten feet long the truly interesting thing about thia is the fact that moat other fossil finds are tbe remains of dead creatures here we have university projects varied image relations office seeks to assess local views students wearing boy scouts celebrating school bands marching fbi agents spying and children swimming are events that have much m common on campus each has created a temporary problem and diverse as these happenings appear m each the way to resolution has crossed the same river the river divides the university from the outside community and over those sometimes troubled waters is a bridge known as the community relations office directing traffic across this bridge is jim harper who has served as the office's sole director since its establishment m 1971 to effectively fulfill his duties harper must first determine the community's perception of the university this involves a two-way exchange according to harper not only does the community relations office receive complaints and compliments it also actively seeks opinions through contacting area residents by telephone and house visits james harper students keep local business profits healthy byjoekita to a clerk at the state liquor store on east fourth street the university means business as soon as school begins our business almost doubles he said we just can't seem to keep enough grain alcohol on hand this profit-oriented view was echoed by moat south side mer chants everyone from mollies pizza to the local taverns and markets regard university students as among their best customers if it wasn't for the students and faculty we'd have a tough time making it the owner of one small diner on the
