paragraph is quoted from the war department bulletin relative to junior engi neering students not in the en listed reserve corps junior students who are pur suing approved technical engineer ing courses and are not members of the enlisted reserve corps will if inducted prior to the end of the first full semester or substantially corresponding academic period that begins in 1943 be placed on inac tive duty while continuing such technical engineering courses until the end of that semester or period they will then be called to active duty those selected at the com pletion of their basic military training for further technical training will be detailed for such instruction under the army spe cialized training program council will engage 2 bands within week interfraternity ball will be in formal on march 6 according to latest plans made by the interfra ternity council at its meeting wed nesday night in drown hall this will be the first time in the history of the dance that it will be an informal affair it is believed that this change will fa cilitate the transportation problem and thereby make possible a larger attendance the council also decided to have two bands one a large name band and another smaller orchestra as in previous years several orches tras have been contacted and it is expected that the selections will be announced within a week the decisions concerning dress and the orchestra were made after the questions were discussed at the various houses previously it was not known whether the dance should be formal or informal and also whether the main band should be a large one or a smaller less expensive group or even whether there should be two bands the date had been previously an nounced as tentative and is now definite george w hoban . . . his passing will be mourned social fraternities elect and initiate leaves for ph d work j calvin callaghan assistant professor of english and speech and director of debating has been granted a leave of absence by the university to work at the univer sity of wisconsin for his ph d in speech he will return in septem ber before coming to lehigh in feb ruary 1936 callaghan held the po sition of instructor and director of debating at the lawrence institute of technology highland park mich professor callaghan is a mem ber of phi beta kappa phi kappa phi and phi eta sigma he receiv ed his a b from the university of michigan in 1932 and his m a from the same institution the fol lowing year he also was an assis tant at the university of michigan from 1931 to 1932 faculty drops five courses five courses were dropped from two curricula monday afternoon at a faculty meeting in the alumni memorial building chem 37 quantitative analysis and chem 49 quantative analysis laboratory both courses designed for students in mining and metal lurgical engineering will no long er be offered m e 24 and m e 124 both engines laboratories for chemical engineers have been dropped as has m e 26 flight wednesday afternoon in drown hall many mourn coach hoban's tragic death football players act as pallbearers by ted peters hundreds of friends students townspeople faculty and alumni paid tribute to the late george w hoban at impressive funeral ser vices held at two o'clock yester day afternoon in packer chapel the sudden death of the popular coach and alumnus on tuesday spread a pall of gloom over the campus hoban died as the result of a heart attack suffered while driving his car home during the lunch hour the coach worked tuesday morning as usual in taylor gym nasium in good spirits and went to the bethlehem club at 12:15 for lunch with johnny trimble the well-known football official dur ing the meal he complained of feeling ill and left to drive home it was during this trip that he was stricken at about 12:45 p m death followed shortly afterward members of last year's football team hoban's first team at lehigh and the most successful team here in recent years acted as pallbear ers at the funeral they were stanley c szymakowski arts 44 bernard w deehan bus 43 claude j kurtz ch e 44x rich ard c shafer m e 44 harold p shoener bus 46r edward j cavanaugh m e 43 dr beardslee officiates dr claude g beardslee uni versity chaplain officiated at the simple services which consisted of scripture reading and prayer dr t edgar shields professor of mu sic presided at the organ among the many flowers were those from the football team and those pre sented by arcadia in the name of the student body when at lehigh hoban was cap tain of the great football team of 1914 which conquered all its op ponents but yale he graduated in 1915 during the first world war he served as a captain at platts burg n v where he coached the football teams of the 304 th infan try and camp devens after the armistice he worked at the sparrows point plant of bethlehem steel and in 1921 was history teacher and director of athletics at friends school balti more the next year he went to st st john's college and in 1926 took the coaching position at baltimore polytechnic school until 1934 through the years his teams play ed 108 games of which they won 73 per cent had been football official george hoban was well-known in football officialdom he started officiating at college games in 1921 and worked at many of the big games of the east until he came to lehigh at the time of his appoint ment he was vice-president of the eastern football officials associa tion hoban was called to lehigh as head football coach on may 23 1942 to replace glen w harme son who entered the navy as a lieutenant in the physical fitness program since he came to bethle hem in july he has won the love and respect of everyone who has come in contact with him always modest and unassuming hoban many sur vey graphic magazine dr peter g bergmann assistant professor of physics just had a book published titled introduction to the theory of relativity by ein stein dr bergmann publishes book on einstein theory bachelor will feature i-f ball wrestling the lehigh bachelor will this month feature interfraternity ball a story on the ball and the cover will be devoted to the fraternities annual affair the magazine will appear in about two weeks also scheduled for this month's issue is a story on the history of wrestling at lehigh and an ar ticle on the typical collegiate prom-trotter the art work in this issue of the bachelor will be rather seriously curtailed because of the fact that the costs for en graving have risen 50 per cent six new members have been in itiated into cyanide junior honor ary activities society hugh boyd 111 m e 44 president announced this week the ceremonies were held at the delta upsilon house thursday night the accelerating sophomores are louis m domeratzky m resolved that odk recognizes the uncertainty and unrest in the minds of many undergraduates and appreciates the impossi bility of maintaining the specific and immediate objectives of nor mal university life we believe patriotism and self-interest demand the very best academic work of which a student is capable however short a time he may be here every student should consider himself
