of ports and terminals dr macßl'wee is the director of the bureau of foreign and domestic commerce the author of numerous books on subjects relating to trade and development of the ports in the united states and probably the highest authority on shipping prob lems in connection with port facili ties at the present time he is con stantly quoted in many of the lead ing newspapers of the country one of his books ports and terminal facilities is used as a text book by the naval engineers and as a refer ence book by the civil engineers at lehigh this subject of traffic handling in our ports is one that has lately been brought before the public by the recent passage of the shipping bill and the formation of the ship ping board dr macelwee's taik will be one of interest to every man in college and all are especially in vited to attend the civil engineer ing society feels that it is a great honor to be able to secure such ' a man to address their meeting and urges every one who possibly can to be on hand major w r coyle at next y meeting tomorrow irght the lehigh freshman five will encounter the lafayette freshmen at easton the game will begin at 7 30 p m and will be played off before the varsity game so far this season the le niigh 24 team has met with defeat but they are not discouraged and will go into tomorrow's game with the determination to register their first victory the squad will prob ably be considerably strengthened by the addition of northrup a for ward of some note from mercers burg he made his first appear ance on the floor this week and has been working out with the regular team coach bartlett has been spending a good deal of time with his men and expects to have them in very good shape for the game he was very much pleased with the work of his team against wyoming sem inary last saturday everyone who saw the game realizes that the strength of that team lav in its sys tematic substitution and that the lehigh fros'h team could have de feated either of the combinations used singly the lehigh yeanlings will prob ably line up the same against lafa yette as they did last saturday with the exception that northrup will start at forward the tentative line up follows : forwards minster and northrup huggims ; center gal lagher guards ruttenberg and bortz ' cyanide club elects officers tomorrow afternoon the brown and white tankmen buck up against rutgers in their first meet of the season rutgers is without a doubt themost formidable opponent on the lehigh schedule and it is to be re gretted that this meet comes so early in the season new bruns wick boasts three men who have made enviable records two of them giebel and galbraith have the distinction of having been chosen to swim at the recent olympics at ant werp giebel's specialty is the dashes while gal ! braith is a diver clarence ross the remaining lum inary holds the metropolitan cham pionship in the 220-yard dash an aggregation like that is hard to beat but , the lehigh squad is deter mined to offer stiff opposition in all events there will be a total of six evehts--50-yard 100-yard and 220 yard dashes a relay diving and plunging the men who will repre sent lehigh are the winners of the try-outs which were held during the early part of the week nine or ten men will make the trip with alanager . farrinigton and coach a'iahoney leaving on the jersey central at 8 44 a . m tomorrow morning the men who will enter in the various events are as follows : 50-yard yamnort and gange were ■•' • ' 100-yard poor and davis 220-yard — jacobs and schaeffer relay jacobs gangewere davis or schaerfer or jenkins and van nort dive — straub plunge — regad and arner the main hopes of lehigh are lodged with jacobs and vannort both fast dash men and with regad the plunger in practice the latter has already equalled the distance which won for damiani the cham pionship last year the team will arrive at new b rums wick in the forenoon and will hold practice in the rutgers pool for about an hour in order to get ac customed to it the meet is sched uled to start at 2 30 p m the y m c a meet this sun day promises to be an unusually good one for besides having an ex cellent speaker a cello solo has been arranged for major w r coyle l l d c e will be the speaker mr coyle was a major of marines during the war and is now vice-president of the weston dodson co where he has several lehigh men under him he acquired his c e degree at washington and ll d at u of p and will no doubt be extremely well fitted to talk on his subject the musical program will be tak en care of by g j abel 24 who plays the cello c berner 21 will accompany him on the piano burr notice trip postponed the trip of the senior metallurg ists and chemicals to the new jersey zinc co at palmerton which was to take place this week has been postponed for several weeks this is a result of the fact that extensive changes at the plant are now being made the adam and eve number comes out today the board has already begun work on the follow ing issue which is titled the anti tobacco number the regular weekly meeting of the burr board is scheduled for to night at 7 o'clock im the burr room drown hall plans were discussed for a more formal gathering to be held in the near future probably at the kurtz restaurant this will take the form the monthly meeting of the cy anide club was held at the wyan dotte hotel on wednesday evening after an informal dinner the mem bers convened for the meeting the outstanding result was the election of officers for the ensuing year the following being elected : c a connell president c c strauch vice-president and o v greene secretary and treasurer m h foote paul lark in and c c strauch were elected on the execu tive committee of a banquet and several prominent men w r ill be invited to address the club deutscher verein to essay penn.-dutch the next social gathering of the deutscher verein is to be staged tonight at sun inn bethlehem this meeting promises to be a very novel and consequently a very inter esting affair it is to be pennsyl vania dutch night and the pro gram will consist of readings reci tations and songs in the dialect which is so prevalent in this vicin ity president barthold has also made arrangements for some kind of musical feature it is obvious that this meeting besides offering a good meal will assure capital entertainment and a pleasant evening to all meniber who attend tomorrow night at easton the brown and white basketball team will meet the lafayette team for the first time this year the game prom ises to be a very close and interest ing one if comparison of scores can be depended on for anything just before the christmas holidays the brown and white quintet went down to annapolis and was handed a 28-14 defeat by the middies last saturday the lafayette team took the same trip dropping the game by a 27-13 score comparing the scores we find that the margin of the vic tory in both cases was 14 points and rates the two teams on an equal basis however it was stated at the time of the lafayette game that the passing and shooting of the maroon and white five was very ragged and unless it has improved considerably cmrinig the past week lehigh should have a little the better of the argu ment coach murphy has been working his meni hard all week in order to get them into their best possible torm he has been very wellsatis fied with their work so far and al though they have met defeat on every foreign floor they are profit ing by the experience they are gain ing and should improve steadily from now on it must be remem bered that the teams that have de feated the brown and white five have been of the best calibre navy has won six straight victor ies so far and is on her way to one of her most successful basketball seasons the lehigh quintet went up against this team with a lot of fight and spirit and made the mid shipmen work for the victory cor nell is conceded to have one of the best basketball teams in the east and a loss to them by a 24-13 score is no disgrace the other game was lost to catholic university by a 29-27 score and was a hard battle the injustice of the referee led sore people to believe that the game was not lost by playing alone so far all the games except the moravian ai|d muhlenberg have been played away and the lehigh student body has not seen the team in real action after a few games on foreign courts the lehigh team will return to taylor gym for a long home stretch it will be in thib period that the brown and white quintet will show its best form on a floor into six distinct acts and an evening ot great and diverse entertainment is promised to all who attend among the acts on the program are ihe iraitor free speech and lhe brink of silence the for mer the traitor has its scene laid in france during the world war and is the story of a traitor who is discovered by means of an unusually clever trap free speech is an act more in the com edy line and the scene is a prison yard in bolsevik russia many interesting and peculiar situations are continually arising and the parts have been selected to tit the indivi duals as in the case with all three of the acts the brink of silence has its scene laid in the antartic re gions and is the story of a boy who meets his father accidentally in an exploring trip but does not recog nize him the father recognizes his son but does not disclose his identity for certain reasons and the son leaves without any knowledge of having seen his father one of the features of the pro gram is a novelty act by j m pier sol 23 and w dana rudy 21 en titled starboard and port and will appeal to everyone herinaif weber 22 will show the audience once again how easily it is to deceive the eye everyone who attended the var iety show last winter knows what a good perforance was given and an even more entertaining show is to be given tomorrow night last year the time of the show prevented a very long damce afterwards but tomorrow night the performance will begin at 8 o'clock promptly so as to have at least two hours for lancing afterwards imimediately fallowing the show a short inter mission will be given in order to clear the floor for the dancing a 12-page program will be given to each person free of charge in which will be found some very in teresting reading matter including several cuts one cut is made from the first picture ever drawn for the mustard and cheese club and which dates back to the 80s there will also appear in the program an article by w r okeson okey telling of the origin and history of the club and how the club got its name continued on page three preliminary tryouts for the wrestling team were held in taylor gym on luesday afternoon and some real ability was shown by the large number of candidates report ing keen interest in the work was apparent and it can easily be seen that there is a wealth ot mater iai from which to pick a righting aggre gation quite a lew students mot directly connected with wrestling were on hand and they were much irate ested in the bouts and pleased with the form shown by the men the trials will be continued this af ternoon and by saturday it is prob able that the team to meet vest vir ginia will have been picked ah of the bouts were fast and strenuous and the new men showed the benefit of the instruction given them by the coach and the old men reporting several of the new men notably church illyus shoemaker and carlisle put up a good scrappy fight and showed up well while v arußilliard was thrown in his match with
