men who graduated and the almost 250 men who were drafted or were awaiting the call the university was generally pleased over the registration but that familiar note of uncertainty hung over both students and ad ministration dr w l jenkins . . . leaves for war work miss june congdon marries lehigh man dean and mrs wray h cong don have announced the marriage of their daughter june congdon to robert gaylord eitner 42 the bride attended the univer sity of rochester and is a gradu ate of st luke's hospital for nurs ing eitner left in april of his sen ior year at lehigh to become in structor of naval cadets and is now with the american airlines nashville term william walker 43x wins chem fellowship william c walker ch e 43x has been appointed to a fellowship in industrial chemistry establish ed at lehigh by the westvaco chlorine products corporation walker's work which will cover a period of two years will be on the uses of active magnesia and will lead to a degree of master of science the research will be done under the direction of dr a c zettlemoyer yearbook deadline feb 4 odk to elect new members thomas goes to army navy for jenkins ah men of the classes of 1943 or 1944 x who have not paid their 1943 epitome as sessment of 6.00 at the place ment bureau by 5 p m thurs day feb 4 will not be includ ed in the 1943 epitome senior section i f council plans ball for march 6 although the final plans for the interfraternity ball will not be completed until tomorrow night's meeting of the if council the ten tative date for the affair has been set at march 6 this year the council is faced with unusual problems caused by the war one of the major ques tions is the choice of a band should it be a big-name band or a smaller one the committee has already agreed that there should only be one band instead of the usual two another issue which the com mittee has to face is the housing situation there are not nearly enough facilities in bethlehem to accommodate the number of girls who would probably attend the af fair this might be solved if the fraternity houses could be opened as they are for houseparties as was suggested at a previous meet ing inducted men to graduate seniors inducted into the armed forces after march 24 will be given a grade for each course which they are carrying at the time and full credit for that course will count towards graduation announced president williams at a faculty meeting on monday afternoon if a senior is passing the re quired number of courses and the required number of electives after march 24th he will be eligible for graduation e kenneth smiley director of admissions announced that 64 new students had entered the univer sity this semester 61 of whom are freshmen this figure far exceeds the expected number of entrants george b curtis registrar an nounced that 1404 students had en rolled for this semester and only slightly over 1200 have paid their fees the decrease in the univer sity attendance is only 11 percent while we have a normal second semester decrease of only 4 percent arcadia appoints liason committee jenkins assigned to cal research lab dr harold p thomas professor and head of the department of education and dr william l jen kins assistant professor of psy chology have been granted leaves of absence to aid the government both men have already left the campus professor thomas has been com missioned a major in the special service division of the army and he will either be placed in the ad jutant general's office or he will do higher education work for the army he is a veteran of the first world war having been a first lieutenant in the infantry jenkins remains civilian although his duties will be in the united states navy radio and sound laboratory at san diego cal professor jenkins will retain his civilian status in his position as civilian assistant to adelbert ford former head of the depart ment of psychology he will work on a war research project under the direction of the university of california before coming to lehigh in sep tember 1932 thomas served as di rector of research and guidance in the springfield mass public schools and held positions as in structor at missouri and rutgers universities he also held a posi tion of course assistant at harvard served as lecturer of education at international and springfield col leges springfield mass served as superintendent of schools in pe tersburg mich and held a posi tion of junior engineer with the osborn manufacturing company in cleveland thomas aided scouts a member of theta chi social fraternity the rotary club the masons scabbard and blade and a member of the board of directors of the bethlehem boy scouts thomas is the author of several works on occupational and educa tional trends he received his b.s from colgate university in 1920 his ed m from harvard in 1925 and his ed d from the same in stitution in 1932 professor jenkins graduated from brooklyn polytechnic insti tute in 1921 and received his m.a at the university of michigan in 1932 and his ph d at the same institution in 1936 he did gradu ate work at michigan before com ing to lehigh in september 1935 a specialist in industrial psy chology jenkins is a member of american psychological asocia tion the eastern psychological as sociation and the sigma xi re search society four to six men from the classes of 44 and 44x will be elected into omicron delta kappa senior honorary activities society at its next meeting wednesday feb 10 at the delta tau delta house ac cording to samuel j davy e e 43 president of the organization as usual the men will be chosen on the basis of points accumulated in previous semesters points earn ed during the summer semester will be given half credit all points must be submitted to mrs bowker in the arcadia office not later than 5 p m on friday feb 5 following are the eligibil ity requirements and point list general rules 1 character shall be the primary require ment for membership in this fraternity no person shall be eligible for active mem bership until he has been in residence at lehigh university at least one year and ranks in the highest 35 percent in scholar ship in his college all applicants will or dinarily submit their scholastic average for five semesters applicants who have fulfilled the residence requirement but have not com pleted five semesters at lehigh must have junior standing and their scholastic average must meet the required standard 2 the membership in the circle shall in clude 15 or more undergraduate men three to be elected in february of each year from the junior class eight to be elected in may of each year from the junior class and four to be elected in september of each year from the senior class this number does not include any men who were active members during the previous year and art returning for a fifth year 3 subject to the provisions of paragraph 1 the election will be based on the point system ; i.e those men in college who have earned the highest number of points shall be eligible to election provided that no man shall be eligible unless his points include at least a defnite number outside his major group 4 the election of any man having the necessary points can only be prevented by two-thirds majority of all members present 5 the membership of the circle shall in clude in addition to the students a small number of faculty and administrative mem bers elected on the basis of conspicuous service to lehigh each year four of this group shall be listed as active members with power to vote group i — according to the latest war de partment communication received by dean wray h congdon on last tuesday morning naval reserve students as well as marine reserves are not af fected by this order and evidently will remain at school in accord ance with the december directive issued by the war manpower com mission and army and navy de partments the text of the tuesday com munication stating the excepted categories is as follows by com mand of major general reckford college students in the enlisted reserve corps will be called to ac tive duty at the end of the first semester term or quarter termin ating after december 31 1942 ex cept as follows all medical and pre-medical students including dental and veterinary approved engineering course students who are classified as sophomores jun iors or seniors advanced course rotc senior unit students all sophomores in military colleges classified as mc colleges by by the war department students in the electronic training group and aviation cadets detailed in structions follow dean's interpretation the dean's interpretation of the order as applying to lehigh stu dents states that 1 all freshmen in army erc will be called any day now 2 all the following groups will be continued in college to some much later and as yet indefinite date a all sophomore junior and senior engineers b all advanced rotc c all premedical predental and preveterinary students d all aviation cadets — subject to call by the air force officers 3 arts and business erc men all classes are subject to call very soon except a those in advanced rotc b premedical predental and preveterinary students during the interval between semesters the dean sent a letter to the parents of all students urging their registration his reasons for advising this step were that the students will lose nothing by at tending since all fees and tuition will be returned in proportion to the part of the semester they have attended and that credits toward their degrees will be apportioned in a like manner in all courses the student is passing at the time of withdrawal attendance also keeps the stu dent educationally solvent which is better than idly remaining at home until his call which may not come for several weeks the w m c the army and the navy have also advised all reserve men to continue studying until they re ceive their call failure to do this may have some bearing on eligi bility for further training after being activated e.r.c.tobe called up for duty soon arcadia has appointed a com mittee for improving channels of information between students and arcadia it was announced at a meeting last night at 7:30 in drown hall it has always been felt by the student governing body that the students should know more of ar cadia's activities and work at this time communication is not strong enough and will be strengthened by the committee those serving on the committee are hugh boyd m e 44 kenneth g swayne m e 44 and william r williams enters army brown & white lehigh university it is not too late at a time when publications in colleges and universities throughout the nation are dwindling because of academic and accelerated pres sure as many men as interested are urged to register for brown and white it is not too late if lehigh is to be given a newsworthy paper twice weekly during the coming semester the brown and white staff must be kept efficient . . . and efficiency depends on manpower most of the openings on the staff are in the reportorial division with at least ten men needed to bring the staff up to adequate membership any student can add brown and white to his roster without paying extra tuition if he is not already taking one hour above his roster al lowance fill out a student's request for change of roster slip at the registrar's office
