impeached at a closed meeting wed nesday disciplinary action was removal from office only members of sac assistant dean of students nathan harris graduate advisor pat naylor and yanavok's university friend sharon siegler head of public services of mart library were allowed in university center room 210 the site of the hearing the brown and white and interested students were barred from the proceedings william quay dean of students said yesterday that yanavok had filed a cover letter indicating his intent to appeal the decision according to the new sac disciplinary guidelines appeals can be asked for only on the basis of a lack of due process yanavok was found guilty of the second of two charges brought by the council the charge said he had violated article iv section 14 of the sac constitution that section says all members of the council shall attend all functions and among other things uphold the spirit as well as the letter of this constitution perform such duties as prescribed by this con stitution and the parliamentary authority adopted by the council or by the president or vice president the charges alleged yanavok filibustered the oct 17 sac meeting and disrupted another meeting by walking out during a serious discussion further the charges said his relationships with other council members bad deteriorated so members felt they could no longer operate effectively with his presence on the council the third charge said his at tempt to create a scandal concerning movie fund inaccuracies further served to injure the name and reputation of the council yanavok was found innocent of the first set of charges brought against him the first set of charges came under the section of the constitution concerning the duties of the publicity committee had been unstable under his supervision inadequate publicity had been supplied for some sac events and publicity committee members had become disenchanted the meeting started at 4:15 p.m and a decision was rendered at 9:50 p.m with only a 15 minute dinner break yanavok called six witnesses from outside the council while sac vice president john nersesian 80 who acted as prosecutor called two non-council member witnesses one of whom was a yanavok witness council members said sources were also called as prosecution witnesses despite the fact that each of the nine active members had a vote in deciding yanavok's guilt or innocence according to sources at the hearing council members were the only people questioned in reference to the second set of charges relating to deteriorating council relationships film money discrepancies and the filibustering of a meeting yanavok was found guilty by the council on this charge yanavok ran his own defense with ad vise from siegler walter kunz concert chairman was chosen at the beginning of the proceedings to be the manager the manager according to the disciplinary procedures adopted by the council jan 25 decides what evidence will be ad ' forum in recommending the elimination of the add drop fee as of fall 1979 at their meeting on wednesday elimination of the add drop fee which is a part of priorities rules and regulations requires approval of the board of trustees larry weitzner chairman of the forum academic environment committee presented the forum's position to edpol the add-drop fee doesn't work he said if a student is already paying 6,000 a year to come to lehigh he'll pay the 10 fee if he wants to drop a course enforcement uneven enforcement of the fee is uneven weitzner pointed out a small percentage of the students are carrying the burden of payment he noted elimination of the fee is important to the students it's a nuisance he said weitzner said some students attribute the number of add-drops to the poor ad visory system here pre-registration is only one week long some schedules are made up without much thought on the part of the student or the advisor weitzer claimed the committee passed a motion to support the forum's recommendation by a 5-1 vote david van horn chairman of the civil engineering department opposed james wagner registrar answered questions from the committee about the add-drop fee he explained that pre registration enables his office to plan staffing requirements and to balance class sizes the percentage of add-drops has in creased gradually over the years he said the percentage of add-drops increased only slightly from 1973 to 1978 the add-drop fee could be considered to be both a processing fee and a penalty fee to keep the number of add-drops as low as possible wagner said the fee may be waived by an advisor for one of three reasons failing a course changing curriculum or a scheduling conflict however edwin kay associate professor of psychology pointed out that some advisors waive the fee like they're waving at a crowd fee waived often wagner estimated that the fee is waived in about 75 percent of the cases peter beidler professor of english said he didn't think advisors should be in the position of judging their students he said it interferes with the working relationship between advisor-advisee kay agreed saying policing by professors was inappropriate beidler also said students should have the right to shop around forum group hears south african debate by kathy mangan the forum subcommittee on university investment policy and south africa at tended a formal debate yesterday at princeton university on investments in american corporations with businesses in south africa according to david amidon subcommittee chairman by hearing both sides of what news week magazine has called the hottest issue on u.s campuses since the vietnam war the subcommittee hopes to gain insight to help draw up a report and rec ommendations to be submitted to the forum next month the university has 13.5 million worth of stocks in 17 corporations with south african operations according to the 1978 treasurer's report this is a little less than half of the university's total investment last spring over 100 lehigh students signed a petition to protest the ownership of stocks in these corporations the trustees agreed to use their proxy votes to make companies adopt responsible social reforms since spring of last year students at colleges across the country have been staging rallies skins and demonstrations to protest their schools investment policies in corporations with south african subsidiaries there has been a high level of activity at ivy league schools with princeton the leader in organized protests amidon said princeton
