chairman laura schrier 80 was elected president of the student activities council for the 1979-80 academic year but impeached publicity chairman jay yanavok 81 a candidate for president said he plans to appeal the election results on the grounds that the winner is not a fulltime university student schrier is m germany for the semester i find it indicative of the way the sac has been running this year to allow such a breach of the election rules to occur yanavok said sac election committee rules state m part that all full time undergraduate students of lehigh university shall be eligible to vote and eligibility to hold office shall be the same as eligibility to vote for that office schrier is not a full time student this semester yanavok said students who take a semester off for any reason must formally withdraw and be re admitted when they return according to mark ellis dean of arts and science college there is no such thing as a leave of absence he said you would not be considered a full time student if you are not studying here elizabeth jaffe secretary m the dean of students office concurred other election results are as follows didi foley 81 vice president rob hnthenherp 81 treasurer anne fite patrick 81 secretary john nersesian 80 concert chairman aurora dela cruz 81 publicity chairman grant danzer 82 fraternity representative linda brett 81 residence halls representative kathy benner 82 independent representative tisha amorusa 81 lectures chairman and karen miller 81 sorority representative next year's council will be left m good hands commented outgoing sac president rob rosenthai 79 in light of the extraordinary cir cumstances surrounding this year's council we did have a very successful year rosenthai said perched b*w photo by morrison have the flocks of prospective froth who visit the university this group is probably being told of the advantages of studying in quiet ' linderman library committee cancels spring fling by eric miller editor-in-chief the organizing committee of the spring fling voted at a meeting last wednesday to cancel the event due to administration interference according to committee chairman john connolly 79 an event such as the spring fling has been con sidered m the past but this year was the furthest the planning had ever reached connolly added however administration involvement m the organization of the spring fling was minimal according to william quay dean of students there was only one meeting involving the dean of students office and the organizing committee otherwise information was transmitted through connolly's weekly meetings with associate dean of students robert reeves as former president of the gryphon society connolly met regularly with reeves other problems m the organization of the fling included security alcohol food financing and attendance the event had been scheduled for may 5 the saturday before the start of final exams an event the scale of the fling requires at least two and a half months of lead time for planning quay said the first mention of the fling reached the dean of students office six weeks ago if we knew from early m the planning stage we would be able to help them from the beginning at any meeting of the organizing committee we would have been sure to send a representative quay said if we had been left alone we could have nulled something off connolly said administration interference caused the committee to lose its bid on a concert south side johnny and the asbury jukes and created a lot of confusion over the financial backing of the fling according to connolly the student activities council ac approved the concert and sent the proposal to the administration because the dean of graduate program chosen for discrimination review by ed fiedler does the university's graduate program discrirninaie on the basis of race color national origin or handicap federal investigators say an on-site compliance review which they will conduct here next week was not prompted by any specific complaints however the university is only one of five schools of its size this year to be chosen as a compliance review target according to ronald gilliam deputy director of the office for civil rights ocr region 111 a division of the department of health education and welfare ocr's emphasis up until now has largely dealt with large state college systems and specific complaints of discrimination gilliam said part of ocr's workload has now been taken over by the u.s department of labor and the 28 people on the pott secondary education staff have begun to concentrate on graduate programs giliiam said the proportion of women and minorities who receive advanced degrees determines what institutions will be investigated he said gilliam would not release the names of the four other institutions which will be under the agency's scrutiny because he said the presidents of those institutions may not have received notice of pending visits the ocr reviews are announced m a 14-page letter to the target institutions only two weeks before the review begins see financing page 14 see review page 13 inside :
