lehigh university brown and white bethlehem pa tuesday october 4 1f77 2is-86i-«31 vol 89 — no 10 administration locks plans for transportation to arena by jim donahue the administration has not made any decisions yet concerning student tran sportation to the arena to be built in saucon valley according to eric ottervik vice president for planning other plan ning details are more important he said the university probably will arrange a form of bus service he continued ottervik said that the university has not made any estimates of the cost of a bus service the bus service probably will be paid for by the university for events such as wrestling matches and basketball games he said for events when ad mission is charged the cost of the service will be included in the price of the ticket he said the student activities council's use of the arena will depend on its accessability to the student body according to chuck heller 78 sac president james harper director of community relations said the arena definitely will be used for commencement and other similar activities the university hopes it can host conferences that it had to turn away in the past because it did not have a facility large enough to handle crowds over 3,000 people he said however the students needs come first and no student function would be preempted by non-university activity he continued the amount of use the arena gets from non-university groups depends on whether or not the university solves the parking probtem harper said currently the university plans to allow parking on a gravel lot and on some fields the athletics division will be the main user of the arena according to william leckonby director of athletics the arena will be used for most winter sports home games it also will be used daily by the basketball team for practice the marching 97 the university's marching band will not hold any concerts in the arena james brown band director said the only time the band will use the arena is for marching band practice during inclement weather the arena will not be used for most events sponsored by the music department because the facility will be too big jerry black assistant professor of music said groundbreaking for the arena is scheduled for this month plans call for a seating capacity of 6,000 the arena is the second unit of the athletic and con vocation center acc student interest in religion grows by peg pfenninger there has been a clear growth of religious interest at lehigh over the past few years according to university chaplain hugh flesher both the number of students involved in the campus religious organizations and the number seeking consultation from his office indicate this growth of interest flesher said in a recent interview and also there is a much greater sense of solidarity and of common cause within those groups he said they are seeing their worth and are really gaining a sense of positivism leaders of the several student-run religious ogranizations also cite the increase in religious interest displayed by university students especially in the past year i am very encouraged by the interest shown by students in our organization this year according cal covert 79 president of the university's campus crusade i feel that we have a very solid and very dedicated group—maybe even more dedicated than in the past we have a group of very enthusiastic freshmen who i know will work hard to help hugh flesher ifc weighs hiring security guards by eric hokenson hie interfraternity council ifc is considering the hiring of pinkerton guards to patrol the sayre park on weekends according to steve detwiler 78 ifc president and hershel dorney assistant to the dean of students in response to problems of thefts and underage drinking by local non-university persons the university has urged the ifc's committee on security to develop possible solutions dorney said suggestions by the committee include id card checks at fraternity doors by the brothers and additional foot patrols in addition to hiring pinkerton guards steve shymon 79 committee chairman said shymon said the university has hired guards several years ago to increase security but the practice has been discontinued additional suggestions will be con sidered at tonight's meeting of the security committee shymon said shymon said foot patrols are used during weekend parties but additional security still is needed if guards are hired their salary will be paid by the ifc and not the university detwiler said the ifc officially maintains that in creased security is necessary frater nities especially those located on the lower hill had trouble with fights and thefts last semester detwiler said he noted that although university students complain about security measures by saying they are being in convenienced they do not realize the seriousness of the problems fraternities must assume responsibility for the problems in which they are in volved dorney said the weekend party atmosphere at the university has become an attractive nuisance he continued because a halt to drinking on campus is not very probable a more responsible drinking attitude must be taken by university students dorney said he explained partying is not a problem in itself when limited to university students however the at tractions of free beer and liberal attitudes by police have attracted a large number of townspeople on campus dorney said the administration has expressed concern with thefts at fraternities by non university people dorney said underage drinking by those people also is a matter of concern he said parents of city teenagers might become concerned if they discovered their children were drinking at the university he said lawsuits against the university by disturbed parents could result he said fraternities also will be required to hook up to a central fire alarm system during the semester which will be monitored 24 hours a day in the university center detwiler said this system should enable the bethlehem fire department to arrive on the scene of a fraternity fire much faster than is currently possible hershel dorney lafayette week talent show permitted with restrictions by deborah barker after a one-year hiatus the lehigh lafayette week talent show will be per mitted this year with restrictions ac cording to dean of students william quay quay said the show must be restructured to prevent a mob scene like the talent show of two years ago john steckbeck associate professor of physical education and director of in tramurals and recreation stressed that the show seeks serious talent not per formances in bad taste steckbeck acted as master of ceremonies for past shows quay explained the talent show usually consists of funny skits however two years ago it included acts with sexual illusions and was obscene last year the show was canceled on the basis of the obscenity he noted students were told that the show must be ' clean ' or would be discontinued indefinitely the show can be fun if it's done right quay said and we certainly want to build up spirit for lafayette weekend quay after discussions with various student leaders decided to permit the show under the conditions that the acts be prescreened by a faculty committee from the music and drama departments only three acts will be allowed to per form quay said total performance time will be limited to 90 minutes with the university stage band to play between acts he noted if any acts are changed without notice both the living group and the individuals involved will be disciplined he emphasized the student activities council sac will assume full responsibility for the show quay said because drinking is prohibited in grace hall where the eveni is held the show must be policed to prevent the excessive drinking and rowdy behavior exhibited by students at the show two years ago he said quay said no intramural points will be given for
