university has increased the number cf women hired and promoted since an affirmative action plan was completed in 1976 but has failed to hire and promote more minorities ac cording to recently released statistics the statistics were given to the brown and white last week by thomas verbonitz director of administrative services and include figures on supporting and administrative staff personnel changes from 1976 and 1977 we have made a good effort verbonitz said of the attempts to implement affirmative action the minority figures are not high enough to be outstanding but our first goal was to get females into jobs originally held by males verbonitz supervises the personnel office which is respon sible for advising university supervisors on the hiring and promotions of non-facuiiy personnel approximately 450 of the 850 full-time employes are not faculty members the approximately 400 faculty members are hired by the provost's office in a seven-page summary of affirmative action results verbonitz noted the increases in females hired for technical and paraprofessional positions i.e technicians programmers analysts etc of 16 new employes for these positions in 1976 four were female in 1977 nine new employes were hired including six females altogether there currently are 26 females employed out of 37 total paraprofessional positions 12 females out of 57 technical positions 34 females out of 123 professional i.e assistant deans storage conditions defended by rosse by ellen feldman the conditions in the service building on fourth st where 40,000 library books are stored are basically no worse than the conditions that prevail in the stacks of linderman library joris rosse director of physical planning said ted bahr 80 a member of the library user's committee said at last week's forum meeting that many of the books are being destroyed by rats and through neglect rosse said he has inspected the building many times and has never seen a mouse or a rat bahr said rosse should take another look at the building bahr noted he did not actually see a rat in the building but saw holes big enough to stick an arm through and shredded paper on the floor rosse said deterioration of books may be caused by moisture in the air which reacts with sulphur in the pages of the books to form sulphuric add no at tempts have been made to dehumidify the air at the service building rosse said such a solution would be feasible if money were available he ex plained if the proposed library building or addition is constructed rosse said books from the service requirements being formulated by govern mental agencies he said no recommendations are before the trustees on any short-term or long-term plans for the university's libraries mohler said in a one-hour press conference with the brown and white editorial board friday afternoon mohler responded to a wide range of questions concerning the university the board of trustees met at the university friday according to mohler the trustees heard several reports but made no decisions mohlers comments included the time element is most important in implementing an affirmative action plan — te city of bethlehem has exerted some pressure on the university to par ticipate in the proposed plaza highrise project an additional 100,000 in pledges for the arena have been received leaving 900,000 more to be raised the administration was correct in making public the grade-buying scheme if thc administration is enlarged whatever is required in extra costs does not have to come out of the academic budget mohler said mohler would not say how the university would compensate for an enlarged administration university's libraries regarding the university's libraries mohler said the administration says the subject is definitely under consideration the university's library system is overcrowded funding for any con struction of a new addition or separate building for the libraries would be included in phase ii of the new century fund campaign mohler said the trustees have had no discussion of phase ii objectives we are sheeting fcr four or five years from now to inaugurate a second phase he said the first phase was completed in 1976 the forum and administration are currently devising the objectives for phase 11 affirmative action affirmative action at the university is definitely the responsibility of the chief executive officer the president mohler said university president deming lewis will have to decide the best way to manage the situation he continued b&w photo by bogucz
