of the year friday evening at 8 o clock ; president b r nevins presided at the close of the business meet ing l smoyer 20 read a paper on electric traction in the mid dle west he discussed phases of the fare rate situation and spoke on problems connected with the operation of traction systems illustrating his talk with lantern slides following smoyer s talk professor william esty head of the electrical department spoke on the field of electrical engi neering and dealt with the op portunities open to men taking that course at the close of the meeting those present adjourned for the main at traction — ' ' e.e.-eats ' ' music was furnished by the serenaders town men elect arcadia representatve lehigh was highly honored last saturday when a commission of the alumni association of the ecole politechnique of the city of paris france visited the university and were conducted through the labora tories the gymnasium and other buildings on the campus the party arrived in bethlehem friday morning from new york in the afternoon they were taken through the plant of the bethlehem steel co and on saturday after noon witnessed the lehigh-new york aggies football game the party was intensely interested in the american game of football and expresesd themselves as having en joyed the contest immensely this having been their first opportunity to witness the american college sport the members of the party were particularly impressed by the physique of the members of both teams they expressed genuine ap preciation of the university in par ticular after their tour of inspec tion having selected lehigh from among the best technical schools of the country for visitation col c e t lull of the general staff of the u s army colonel lull is himself a lehigh man having graduated in 1900 with the degree of b.s in metallurgy the party included about twenty-five people headed by major general v cornille and m roume honor ary governor of the french colo nies also included in the com mission were m gatiene inspector general of finance m brisac in spector general of roads and bridges four french army lieu tenants and five cadets who were called to the colors before com pleting their education and are now about to return to their studies the ladies of the party included madame brisac and two daughters and three nieces of m gatiene the brown and white eleven rolled up the largest score of th 3 season last saturday when the totaled 51 points against the new york aggies on taylor field while the nearest the visitors came to scoring was in the last two minutes of play when they man aged to carry the ball to the 15 yard line by a series of forward passes but were unable to take it over the visiting french commission was present at the game and be fore the contest the lehigh band marched to the center of the field and played the french and ameri can national anthems while the crowd of several thousand and the players on both teams stood at at tention with heads bared the aggies were forced to play a defensive game almost entirely and although in the first half the_v head master of nazareth hall likens religion to science in forceful address the y m c a meeting sun day night was favored by an ad dress from dr a d thaeler head master at nazareth hall military academy dr thaeler was for years a resident of bethlehem be fore his career at nazareth and is well known by many of the stu dents the subject of his talk was a laboratory religion he re marked that one goes into a scien tific laboratory with a theory and performs a number of experiments and tests to show that this theory is a real fact so it is with religion it is taken into the laboratory of human experience analyzed and tested and emerges as a vital real indispensible factor in civilized life dr thaeler emphasized the fact that religion to be a religion must be concerned with everything we do and must be interwoven with every action we perform the moment we neglect to do this our entire religion is transformed into a fable in the so-called glorious days of rome the people had this faulty conception of religion a citizen of rome thought nothing oi com continue on living down town james cullen ganey 8.a 20 was elected to the office by acclamation college meeting october 20 1919 to the student body of lehigh university south bethlehem pa whereas the arcadia of lehigh university at its regular monthly meeting held on the evening of oc tober 3 1919 proposed and passed a set of recommendations de signed to cope with the situation in regard to the maintenance of freshman regulations and college customs without resorting to the method of hazing said recom mendations to be submitted to the faculty of lehigh university for their approval and whereas the faculty after having referred both these matters to a special committee has ap proved the plan as submitted on the maintenance of freshman regulations and college customs and whereas these provisions as passed by the arcadia and ap proved by the faculty are included in the following that the code of " regulations for freshmen and continued on second page pages 46 47 48 of the students handbook vol xxix 1919-1920 is reasonable and is designed to give that measure of direction for conduct for those to whom they may apply so that harmony mutual deference and respect may become instilled into and become an integral part of lehigh s stu dent body and to accomplish this purpose that if a man re fuses to abide by the freshman regulations or by any of the cus toms and traditions of lehigh university he will be called be fore the arcadia and if found guilty will be warned that such marlyand-lehigh club re-organization meet the eomimission was received at tea by dr and mrs drinker at their home following their visit to bethlehem and the university the commission left for west point to inspect the military academy a college meeting will be held wednesday october 22 at 12 m in the assembly room of packer hall the purpose of the meeting is to make arrangements for the trip to perm state for all those wishing to see the games there the entire student body will be urged to turn out and assemble at the central railroad of new jersey station next thursday evening when our football team leaves for pittsburgh and the carnegie tech game the train is scheduled to leave at 7 20 p.m thursday senior trip wednesday senior students in the courses of metallurgy chemical and mining engineering will visit the plant of the u s metals refining co at chrome n j wednesday to study the smelting and refining of copper at this plant which is one of the most modern in the country the trip will be in charge of prof j w richards head of the department of metallurgy and will be in con meeting of the civil engineering society on thursday evening at 7 30 p.m in the fritz engineering laboratory the program includes addresses by faculty members of the civil de partment and by colonel lang strength tests will be run in the laboratory and guessing con tests on the probable outcome of the tests will be an entertaining feature the meet will not be lack ing in the usual attraction — eats and smokes the invitation to attend the af fair is extended to not only stu dents in the civil but also those in the naval engineering courses put up a stubborn resistance aiid held lehigh to two touchdowns and a field goal the second half found their line weakening and the brown and white backs plowed their way through for long gains each run the only serious injury during the game came in the second period when henzelman who was carrying the ball around right end was tackled and fell on his side dislocating his left elbow the in jury it is thought will keep km out of the game at least two wee":s and his loss will be keenly felt by coach keady as his line plungirg is always good for a gain and lie plays a strong defensive game buzz herrington also receiv ed a minor injury in this period and retired in favor of coleman whose work during the balance of the game was of a high order tn the absence of coach keady the team was in charge of pat pazetti lehigh s all american quarterback of several years ago who has devoted a great deal of time this fall in helping keady handle his large squad in the second half he made a great many substitutions without apparently weakening the playing strength of the team to any great extent probabh the outstanding feature of the game came in the second period when herrington kicked a beautiful goal from the 40-yard line the kick was perfect in direc tion and cleared the crossbar with several yards to spare the other bright spots in the contest from a lehigh point of view were the line plunging of douglas liston cad son
