campus police of non-university persons who vandalize or cause disturbances on campus has increased partially due to the new patrolling techniques adopted by the police force in the past year according to eugene dax campus police captain new police methods dax mentioned included 24-hour radio monitoring and undercover student patrols these methods along with the regular car patrol are the most effective at night when most vandalism and disturbances occur dax said . vandalism probably is one of the most frequent violations on the campus by non university individuals he explained one of the worst places is behind fritz laboratory he said broken lights ruined shrubbery and obscene graffitti frequently appear there dax also said the walls of mart library are frequently vandalized he added that the most frequent violators are local juveniles many of the juveniles have been caught for more than one offense he said the campus police recently ap prehended three juveniles one aged 11 in connection with several incidents of vandalism and possibly a petty theft the patrolling campus police are solely responsible for apprehension of vandals and agitators dax said the radio monitors and student patrols are available only to inform the police of where crimes are being committed currently the university has two cars patrolling in a day shift and three at night they patrol the main campus warren square the saucon valley sports complex sayre park and smags student patrols are a very effective part of the campus protection system dax said three students equipped with small police radios patrol the campus and report any disturbances they encounter they are instructed never to intervene they just find a closet somewhere and call us that makes them the most effective he explained the student radio monitors are also an integral part of the campus police force the captain asserted currently the university employs 15 students to man the radio located in the university center dax's secretary monitors the radio and state agents charge student with drug sale by michele macdonald a university student has been arrested by the pennsylvania bureau for drug control on charges of possession and delivery of marijuana die brown and white has learned jonathan berger 79 was arrested at his residence at 446 carlton ave oct 10 for allegedly selling one quarter pound of marijuana a bureau spokesman said the dean of students office was not informed of the arrest prior to or after the incident according to arthur mann associate dean of students the bureau an agency of the state department of justice made the arrest with assistance from the bethlehem police and the campus police district magistrate john gombosi said a preliminary hearing for berger was held oct 27 he will be tried in nor thampton county court in february under pennsylvania drug law con viction for possession and delivery of marijuana is a misdemeanor and carries penalties of up to one year in prison a 5,000 fine or both in a separate incident reported earlier two students were arrested oct 20 by the bethlehem police and charged with inflation blamed for rise in price of saucon arena by jim donahue inflation has caused the cost of the athletic convocation center indoor arena to rise from 3.5 million to 3.7 million according to erik ottervik vice president for planning ottervik said the increase is about equal to the 10 to 11 per cent inflation rate of the construction industry over a half year the board of trustees approved plans for an arena costing 3.5 million last april ottervik said the board's executive committee has been contacted and has approved the arena with the new price tag the administration had suspected that the cost of the arena would be above the 3.5 million limit ottervik stated over the past several months the ad ministration has been working with the architect and the construction managers humphreys and harding inc trying to hold down costs by changing the ar chitectural drawings a new drawing of the building was released this week ottervik said the actual cost of the building may be more or less than the 3.7 million bad weather strikes and further steel price boosts could raise the cost of the arena he added that there is money in cluded in the 3.7 million for contingencies if these do not occur the cost of the arena may be lowered humphreys and harding inc will accept bids from subcontractors that will build the arena humphreys and harding has been the construction managers for four other buildings on campus the field altered plan this new drawing of the athletic convocation center indoor arena was released this week the architectural drawings were changed m an attempt to keep the cost of the arena down in spite of the changes the cost of the arena has risen from 3.5 million to 3.7 million according to eric ottervik vice president for planning he said the actual cost of the arena may be higher or lower than 3.7 million depending upon the weather and other contingencies administration will meet to study affirmative action by linda pickens the administration has agreed to meet with members of the faculty and staff to discuss concerns about affirmative action at the university according to richard spriggs vice president for administration and head of the affirmative action directorate the meeting was suggested in a letter sent by 42 faculty and staff members to university president deming lewis last thursday in due course there will be some kind of meeting spriggs said he added that it would be totally inappropriate to discuss outcomes of such a meeting spriggs emphasized that the faculty group took a month to respond to lewis memo of oct 3 and the administration in turn needed more time to prepare a response to the faculty group both he and lewis were out of town friday and have not had time to discuss the letter spriggs said no date has been set for the meeting between the faculty group and the ad ministration spriggs said he does not expect it will involve all 42 of the signatories austin gavin executive consultant to the president commented in a separate interview that a response
