the work forum credit survey misleading by michele macdonald results of the forum's survey on academic credit for activities are of little significance and are possibly misleading according to two university faculty members who specialize in statistical analysis the survey is seriously flawed said carol barner-barry assistant professor of government if a survey is going to have an influence on any policies then it should be more carefully done i think useless is too strong a word for it said robert thornton associate professor of economics but it really doesn't tell you very much the survey was conducted last semester by the forum academic credit sub committee to determine how the university community felt about granting credit for participation in extracurricular activities the nine-question survey was mailed to all faculty members as well as graduate and undergraduate students larry weitzner 79 who designed the survey said it was definitely one of the major projects of the forum this year the project was created to try to get credit for forum members and to make the university credit policy move con sistent weitzner added currently only a few activities are credited the primary flaw in the survey ac cording to barney-barry and thornton is that it cannot be said to be representative only about 40 per cent of graduate students responded to the survey if the respondents had been randomly selected or if the number of responses had been higher then you could say there was a high probability that it was represen tative barner-barry said but with this the other 60 per cent of the faculty could feel just the opposite of those that responded you just don't know with such a low response the survey is just so flawed that it is a problem to know what to do with it she added results of the survey had indicated that a majority of faculty members were against giving credit for any activity undergraduate students were fairly evenly divided on the issue graduate students responses have not been tabulated yet it could give you a misleading view thornton said i would bet that they got most of the faculty who felt strongly against credit the others probably larry weitzner sorority rush successful fraternities have bad year sororities by linda pickens all three sorority houses will be filled next year as a result of this year's suc cessful rush program according to the rush chairmen of alpha phi alpha gamma delta and gamma phi beta the response was a lot better than i think anyone expected lee kraushaar 79 rush chairman for alpha gamma delta said each sorority was limited to a total of 23 new pledges by the panhellenic society fraternities by 808 fisher fraternities pledged approximately 40 fewer freshmen this year than last ac cording to steve detwiler 78 in terfraternity council ifc president a preliminary count shows that 350 fresh men pledged to fraternities at the end of formal rush detwiler said he is optimistic that the number will grow with intensive post-rush efforts we would consider this a bad year detwiler said he attributed the decline to no fault of the ifc system—just cir cumstances he noted that the downward trend has been going on since four or five years ago when the system had a record of almost 500 pledges detwiler confirmed that the turnout for the open houses held to introduce fresh men to the fraternities was down from last year however he said that this probably was not a factor in the low pledge numbers detwiler noted that the fresh shop talk les whitten 50 who writes a syndicated column
