brown and white vol 89 no 40 bethlehem pa friday march 17 1178 v : vy : yv:::-::y 21541twi director opposed to band credit by jim donahue band director james brown assistant professor of music said he agrees with a report recommendation by the academic credit subcommittee of the forum academic environment committee that the marching band should not get academic credit brown said the marching band works 95 per cent on marching and thus had less of a concentration on music than do the other university musical groups the subcommittee report recommended that credit be retained for those other groups such as the concert band glee club and women's choir on the other hand band manager david rush 79 and robert haines 79 said they want credit for the band continued only one thing will keep the marching band full and that is credit rush said a lack of credit for the marching band would give the other groups at the university an unfair advantage in recruitment of members according to haines and rush the students disagreed that the mar ching band has little academic value as the report states according to larry weitzner 79 subcommittee chairman the statement is an assumption by the committee based on brown's remarks at the subcommittee's open meeting weitzner said the corn mittee accepted the report unanimously haines commenting on the band's academic value claimed that most people in this country get their musical ex perience from marching bands although haines said brown's statement that the marching band worked mostly on mar james brown little value seen in referendum on plaza project by peter schilling a referendum gauging student opinion on the proposed plaza highrise would have minimal impact on the administration's decision-making process according to brian finn 78 forum chairman the administration more than likely would ignor any referendum that asked students if the university should build the plaza for several reasons finn said first finn explained since the vast majority of the student body does not know project details the administration would consider such student opinion uninformed the administration questions the amount of input the seven-member student review board that is familiar with the situation makes towards the plaza project how do you think they would accept the opinion of the general student body that doesn't know the details finn said secondly he said to complete a referendum before the administration made its decision would be difficult he added that if such a referendum were taken only the opinions of current fresh men and sophomores who planned to remain within the residence halls system would be relevant because they are the ones who would be living there when it is completed the present plaza completion date is fall 1979 when asked how effective a referendum that simply asked students whether they would live in the plaza would be finn again answered that the administration would not consider seriously such a referendum according to finn the ad university secretaries consider unionization by linda pickens a letter and pamphlet concerning unionization has been sent to university secretaries and clerical workers by a group calling itself the lehigh university secretarial office and clerical employe organizing committee the letter states we have met with representatives of the retail clerks union local 1361 allen town on several oc casions and decided this letter was the best way to present our case the university group would join the union only if a secret ballot election held by the national labor relations board favored unionization in order for the national labor relations board to hold an election it first must be petitioned by the university group the secretaries and clerical workers are asked in the letter to mail attached cards to serve as the group's petition we feel our only hope to a more secure financial future is to seek union representation the letter states the letter does not list specific grievances although it states many of us are finding it increasingly difficult to live on our salaries with no foreseeable improvement in the near future the letter stresses that the group has the legal right to unionize as guaranteed by the national labor relations board it also states that union dues of 2.45 per week will not be required until a majority of the employes vote to accept a negotiated contract also dues cannot be increased unless a majority votes to do so and no union initiation fees will be required of present or future employes before a contract is instituted according to the letter we shall never know whether or not unionization is the answer without an election and a mandate for the union the letter concludes the pamphlet sent to the secretaries and clerical workers is a retail clerk's union publication it explains why employers bb.w photo by heioenreich plmo warm temperatures and melting now created eerie v*fv/dc7 ground fog
