some good men the frosh are scheduled to play wyoming seminary at kings ton tomorrow and the game will undoubtedly be a good one for wy oming is said to have a crack team a number of games have been easton jan 22 — moravian college at moravian feb 12 — lansford high at lans ford pa feb 16 — bethlehem business college at home march 2 — lafayette at home march 12 — nazareth hall at nazareth march 19 — perkiomen school at home dr drinker elected member of a i m e visitors from allentown show good resistance to lehigh at tack first half 19-15 final score 35 - 25 lingle does clever work at for ward scores 4 field goals capt frain & maurer each 3 the lehigh basket ball team easily defeated the mulhieniberg quintet wednesday night in taylor gymna sium the final score stood 35 to 25 and although the game was fast and close during the first half it slowed i 1 p during the second and the re sult of the game was never in doubt lingle was the individual star of the game with four field goal's to his credit and eleven out of sixteen fouls he was closely followed by maurer and capt frain both de positing in three field goals a piece and passing excellently for muhlen'berg rhode starred tossing four field goals and seven out of fifteen fouls james al'so played an excellent game for muhl enberg the score at the end of the first half was 19 to 15 the summary follows : lehigh bstes for many years a lecturer of lehigh university was given at 11 a m dec it7b before the student body of the university in the grand opera house the lecture was il lustrated by moving pictures pre pared by the division of public health education by the state de partment of health announcements as to several col lege matters were made by registrar j walters who had charge of the meeting in the absence from the city of dr drinker amd vice-president emery the use of the grand opera house was donated to the university by managers sabosky and mcgurk wrestling tryouts coach sheridan has announced that tryouts for the meet with west virginia on jam 23rd will be held on j tuesday thursday and friday of next week i as this is the mountaineers initial ! engagement with the lebigh grap j piers the meet is looked forward to with much interest among the veterans of last year's team that have reported are capt bertolet good loeser childs locke ray meyers and several ! others on dec 17 lehigh was defeated by catholic university in a hard iought contest by the close score of 2y to 27 lingle was probably the star for the brown and white by virtue of his fast playing making three field goals and fifteen out of seventeen foul goals springsteen also played an exceptionally good game at guard in the second half it was plainly seen that lehigh out played the fast catholic university team the opponents playing was conspicuous by an unusual number of long field goals 1 he next day lehigh was defeat ed again this time by the strong navy team as in the game the day before the playing was slowed up considerably by the large num ber of fouls in this game frain showed up well for the brown and white making two field goals and playing a hard defensive game mckee navy's football star of the main acts are being rehearsed and plans have been made for two ad ditional surprise acts to make up a complete variety entertainment the stage in drown hall has been completely arranged fo<r the electri cal effects by j h widmyer 21 electrician of the club and the scenery and stage settings are near ing completion under the direction of l l dixon 21 stage carpen ter following the plans of last season two tag days will be held next week for the sale of tickets to the student body these days will be wednesday and thursday on these days tickets will be sold to the student body for 50c and a tag will be given to each student buying one or more tickets regardless of the personal taste of each individual student concerning the kind of show to be given the variety show is worthy of the support of the en 4*fe college and each one should feel it his duty to buy a ticket j whether able to attend the show or not the tickets sold may be exchanged for reserved seats for an additional 50c dancing will fol low the show and the time of the show will be arranged so as to give plenty of time for the dancing l l dixon 21 stage carpenter extends a call for a number of ad ditional assistant carpenters to re port at once in drown hall after i uooits from four to six o'clock this presents an opportunity for men who have no thespian ability to still make the club provided they have a fair amount of mechanical talent new york lawyer at y meeting trustees meet at a meeting oi the american institute of mining engineers held in new york city on dec 17 president drinker who is one of the founders of the institute was elected an honorary member of the institute this is an exceptional distinction which the institute has bestowed upon only forty-one emin ent engineers and men of science in its fifty years of existence among the sixteen living honor ary members are prof richard ackerman of sweden sir robert hadfield of england herbert c hoover and robert w hunt of the united states ezequiel ordonez of mexico alexandre pourcel of france prof dimitry constantin tschernoff of russia and prof tsumashiro wada of japan among the twenty-five deceased were sir lowthiani bell bruno kerl joseph le conte j p lesley franz posepny theodor richter william c siemens and lehigh's past president dr thomas m drown and andrew carnegie am interesting feature of the in stitute meeting was the display of the original receipt for dues of dr drinker for the first year of the in stitute 1871-1872 the institute was founded in may 1871 when dr drinker was a student at le high the call to form the insti tute was issued early in 1871 by eckley b coxe martin coryell and richard p rotbwell distinguished mining engineers of that day mr rothwell who had his office as min ing engineer ini wilkes-barre was then serving as demonstrator of the lehigh university school of mines upon his invitation dr drinker who was a senior in mining attend ed the organization meeting of the institute in afternoon at 3 o'clock in taylor pool on mon day afternoon the prelim for the 100-yard candidates will be staged these try-outs are likely to give some inside dope on the standing of the squad and it will doubtlessly be of interest to many to witness them about 30 men are out for i he team notice is given to members of the class of 1922 of the junior orator ical contest to be held on tuesday morning feb 22nd in packer memorial church this contest was established by the alumni as sociation of lehigh university in 1882 prizes of 25 15 and 10 are offered contestants must be memibers o-f the junior class tak ing a regular course juniors who contemplate com peting should at once see prof thayer head of the english de partment at his office in saucon hall prof thayer will give in formation about suitable subjects length of oration and other details as the oratorical contest is one of the traditions of the university juniors are urged to take part so that the class of 1922 will worthily maintain the standard set in past years prepare for junior oratorical contest lehigh expects a tough battle with cornell's fast squad in game at ithaca tomorrow night cornell has a victory over the strong princeton five to her credit one of the most important bas ket ball games of the season will be played saturday next when le high meets the strong cornell team at ithaca starting the season with only two men from last year's varsity on hand coach murphy has succeeded in putting out a fairly formidable team ' lees from last year's squad seems to have won the center position and springsteen and lingle fill the re maining vacancies while the team has been somewhat weak on team ' play in the earlier games the men have shown some good individual playing lingle has been doing some good foul shooting and is well able to take care of this depart ment cornell will oppose lehigh with probably one of the best basket ball tears in the east three men re i maim from last year's strong team and the remaining places will be i filled by the championship freshman team the cornell team is said to be fairly heavy and very fast i cornell has won several games this season including a victory over ; the strong princeton team but losing 1 by two points to the university of i buffalo this game was played dur ing the christmas vacation however ] and probably does mot represent the ' strength of the team while le ] high does not expect to beat the new york state five the affair should prove to be an interesting ] exhibit of basket ball the lehiigh line-up will be the < same as christmas holidays track activities have been practically at a standstill however th board track has been on the upper field since before the holidays and every day several of the conscientious men who want to keep in condition may be seen bard at work although most of the men are idle just now manager barthold is working on a schedule thiat will give all of the men plenty of work to do when the spring season openis he is however having the same diffi culty that most of the managers of the various sports have had the intercollegiate athletic association has not yet arranged its schedule and until that is dione no definite dates cam be decided upon how ever manager barthold is in touch with some very good teams and all that need be decided is the date of the meets sophs attention a meeting of the class of 1923 will be held today at 11 a m in packer hall all sophomores should make it a point to attend ! ! senior electives in english announced prof thayer head of the eng lish department has posted on the bulletin board in saucon hall the second term electives open to mem bers of the senior glass the first is american drama to be given by prof thayer three hours a week with the use of baker's modern american plays as the text book the second is tournalism a practi cal course without text book to be conducted one hour a week by asst prof walters applicants for the latter course should give their names at once to mr walters at the university office in packer hall sword & crescent elects new men the following seniors who were not present at the tap day exercises have up to its full quota of fifteen burr notice there will be a regular meeting of the burr board this evening at seven o'clock in drown hall the sunday addiress at the v | meeting for january 9th is to be delivered by mr j bruce curray a prominent lawyer of new york city for several years mr curray has been a professor at columbia university law school and is well known in his profession the men who were at the silver bay con ference last summer will remember him for his forceful and inspiring talks it is certain that mr cur i ray will bring to us a vital message and everyone is strongly urged to i be present sunday afternoon at 4.15 p m at this meeting r t settle 23 will play a violin solo which is but one of the special features being ar ranged for musical clubs resume rehearsals at the meeting of the board of trustees of lehigh university held in new york dec 28th at the of fice of mr c m schwab no action was taken in the matter of the elec tion of a president to succeed dr drinker except the continuance of the committee who have the matter under consideration as dr drink er's resignation tendered last spring has been accepted to take effect on the 31st inst the board adopted
