to hold rally in grace hall tonight tonight at 7:15 in grace hall the junior class will hold its pep rally and smoker for the perm state game c l t sonny ed wards will be the main speaker of the evening mr edwards is a le high alumnus and has been in con stant touch with lehigh's football teams and should make some in teresting predictions concerning the game hugh boyd m e will be the master of ceremonies for the rally perm state is the first home game and after the good showing that the team put up against the lads from new haven it is ex pected that a large crowd will turn put at grace hall there will be free cigarettes and corn cob pipes for all who attend many frater nities have planned on an earlier dinner in order that the members of their houses may be on hand for the start of the rally both the lehigh collegians and the university band will play dur ing the rally the collegians will play four numbers and the band is expected to introduce a patrio tic theme skinner appears at scl tonight service operations gives period profit of 52,500 university profit on various service operations for the fis cal period 1941-1942 totaled 52,505.88 these operations include chemistry store 83,790.47 ; dining service 1,105.30 laboratories 508.28 supply bureau 14,299.90 eta sigma phi holds banquet for four pledges four pledges of eta sigma phi honorary classical fraternity hap pily shed their bedsheets at an initiation banquet last night initiated were david m john arts 45 david j e sweet arts 45 albert e hartung arts 45 and robert a mckinley arts 45 cornelia otis skinner well known american monologist will appear on the student concerts lectures series program at 8:30 tonight in broughal high school auditorium the sketches miss skinner will present are all her own composi tion she has had a successful ca reer on the stage as an actress playwright anr producer and for the past decade has been among the better known theater people two seasons ago she presented a program at lehigh and was well received by the audience the curtain time has been changed from 8:15 to 8:30 to ac commodate all students attending the perm state rally students will use their athletic cards for admission and the fac ulty their special booklets gen eral admission tickets will be sold at the door for 55 cents tax in cluded but the annual frosh sophomore games in the afternoon during which the freshmen were victorious climaxed the informal activities leaving packer chapel at the conclusion of wednesday's formal cel ebration president clement c williams and dr alexander louden would also be signed was intimated by kirschner this would provide dancing on both the gym and drill floors of grace hall to name second band robert p whipple chem senior president also expressed confi dence that the band would be well received saying that the ball committee has done a fine job in signing a top name band despite the unusual problems facing them this year the announcement of byrne's lehigh engagement was made last night by william c kirschner chem chairman of the ball com mittee after several other well known bands had been considered for the occasion kirschner ex pressed satisfaction that the choice of byrne would prove acceptable to the student body second band for ball may be named bobby byrne and his orchestra have been selected as the feature band for the senior ball to be held the night of friday oct 30 the weekend of fall houseparty in grace hall gordon presents new system of awards until now there have been spe cial awards for the class i and ii sports but no arrangement has been made for the clubs the pro posed system might tend to put the club sports even further out of touch with the general sys eight members were elected to the xi circle of omicron delta kappa honorary senior society at a meeting wednesday night an nounced samuel j davy e e president four seniors were chos en and four accelerated juniors were also added to the list of ac tive members the seniors are john a thurn m e preston parr jr ch e william d schaeffer chem and robert d bailey i e the accelerated juniors select ed are kenneth g swayne m e blame d ferrell ch e david f cox eng phys and theodore peters jr ch e james a gordon director of athletics presented the proposed awards system to the group for discussion one of the points in the system no athlete may be recommended for a letter in any sport who has not been a mem ber of the squad in good stand ing ..." the phrase in good standing brought up as one of the main points of discussion m on manager's letter other points discussed were the problem of procuring the awards and the proposed system of having a small m on the manager's let ter and a small cl on the let ters awarded to the university cheerleaders the most important point that was discussed was that the new system destroys the distinction be tween class i and ii sports but it leaves the class 111 or club sports completely out of the picture the society felt that something should be done to strengthen the posi tion of the club sports continued on page 2 the freshman class gained a 4-0 victory over the sophomores in the annual contests on the upper field on wednesday afternoon and in so doing the class of 1946 will no longer be required to wear the regulation attire on sundays wear the identification button or be in before ten o'clock in the evening as officially announced by cyanide neither team had scored by the end of the medicine ball rush and the event was called a draw in the other events however the freshmen scored decisive wins they defeated the class of 1945 in the tug of war medicine ball relay push ball contest and the flag rush there were approximately 250 freshmen on the field and only 75 sophomores frosh victorious over sophomores precede the university band in the recessional to the flag pole where with the singing of the alma mater the formal observance came to an end . . . mcgee will play at ball from 10 til 2 featured vocalists with the band are lynne richards and alan ger ard johnny mcgee his singing trumpet and his orchestra will be featured tomorrow night at the engineers ball the dance will begin at 10 p m in grace hall and will run until 2 o'clock the dance lehigh's first fall so cial event is sponsored by phi eta sigma and eta kappa nu hon orary mechanical and electrical engineering societies and proceeds will go toward the upkeep of the packard laboratory lounge tickets on sale at the supply bureau and the arcadia office cost 2.20 per couple and 1.50 for stags diesel
