criteria for determining tenure was approved by the tenure subcommittee of the forum on monday according to the report by the student representatives on the subcommittee a faculty member carrying nine teaching hours per week or more should have his student evaluations weigh between 30 per cent and 49.9 per cent in the department's tenure determination chairman sutton monro professor of industrial engineering said some ad ditions will be made to the reports in cluding more specific recommendations in regards to other kinds of faculty con tracts he said the complete proposal should be ready for presentation to the forum on march 18 a discussion between student and faculty members of the subcommittee centered on the importance of teaching excellency as opposed to pure research contributions in determing the value of a faculty member eligible for tenure the student members of the sub committee state in the report we believe excellence in teaching must be the primary criterion in deciding who receives tenure it is through excellence that students truly benefit from the lehigh experience although it is recognized that students can evaluate only teaching effectively it is understood that research is equally im portant in deciding the granting of tenure the report states we reaffirm the position of not hiring faculty members for research purposes only thomas cheng professor of chemistry remarked a dichotomy is being drawn between the teacher and the researcher some scholarly activity should go hand-in hand with teaching we should look for a faculty member who is both a good teacher and a good researcher he added that everybody does some teaching even if it is on the graduate level he also explained that one million dollars a year is received from research and said most of this goes for salaries j donald ryan professor of geology commented tenure is not meant to protect somebody who is simply doing research the first-class researchers never have any contact with un dergraduate students and that is what is different about lehigh the student's report to the sub committee also states that determination of tenured professors should proceed from a consideration of the amount of time spent in the classroom the evaluations should be weighted proportionately to the teaching hours performed it said a faculty member carrying nine classroom hours a week should have his evaluation weighed three times as much as those with three hours a week of classroom commitment time spent on teaching varies from semester to semester however said ryan and added i think you have to ira schulman new ambulance service is possible says quay byrobfeldman the university is currently in vestigating the possibility of subscribing to a private ambulance service according to dean of students william quay i think that the possibilities are pretty good especially for the coverage of public events in addition to some of the events which are not covered now he said quay acknowledged that the present system by which a request for an am bulance must be made through the bethlehem police who in turn call the campus police can in some cases be inadequate according to the standard operating procedure of the bethlehem police department an ambulance is dispatched simultaneously with the campus police to the scene of uie emergency in some in stances however that does not always happen instead the campus police arrive first to determine whether or not an am bulance is required that's why it would more than 30 to run for forum by marsha m arson approximately 30-40 stu.lents have turned in petitions to run for the 60 positions available to graduate and un dergraduate students for forum vi ac cording to forum chairman george krauss i don't think that's too bad at all at this stage krauss said and added we certainly would like more petitions the deadline for petitions has been extended until wednesday forum secretary-treasurer gary lacocca 76 said he is pleased with the number of petitions in so far he en couraged students to run for forum vi noting that more than 30 of the 50 un dergraduate students on forum v are seniors who are unable to run for re election students should run for forum vi because the forum affects students and it affects university decisions he said there is so much that the forum can accomplish with 60 concerned students he said adding the past years are past and every year something new can be achieved the main reason to run for forum vi is that the forum's actions affect one's own personal life on campus according to krauss the major purpose of the forum is to provide a means to carry on a dialogue between all segments of the university community which includes students faculty and administration he said krauss added that the forum is the only place where this dialogue can become some type of legislation and this legislation affects all our lives janet scagnelli 75 forum vice chairman said the forum is the best way to effectively do something at the university the forum provides the op portunity for students to give input for the university the forum is an educational ex perience as to how things are being run at the university according to lorna velardi 75 forum representative to the board of trustees velardi said working on the forum provided her with an awareness about the world and social concerns if all one is getting out of school is from the classroom then one is missing out on a lot she added velardi said she questioned what the university would be like without the forum and said the administration now realizes that it must be accountable to the forum richard boig 76 forum represen tative to the board of trustees said i don't think i'll run for forum vi but that doesn't mean others shouldn't run elections for forum vi will be held on march 17 and 18 petitions are available in the forum office and at the student ac tivities desk gary lococca ottervik says university won't buy post office by dave klucsik the university is no longer considering purchasing the south side bethlehem post office at fourth street and brodhead avenue according to eric ottervik vice president for planning purchase of the 58-year-old building was considered in august 1974 after university officials were notified that the postal service would no longer handle door-to door delivery on campus university in coming mail would have been deposited in one central location leaving sorting and delivery up to the university a job ex ceeding the limited facilities of the campus mail room the post office department is selling the building due to relocation of facilities in a new 1.25 million complex on east broad street to be completed in 1976 so far the university has been the only interested buyer we didn't really want the building ottervik said he noted that the building is not close to the campus and is not part of the 10-year plan for the university but he said the university would have needed some increased facilities to handle its own mail we're talking about 10,000 pieces of mail a day for a city of 6,000 here ottervik said adding they the postal service were going to just dump the mail here we asked them to reconsider it he said we have worked this out with postal authorities and we do not need the building engineering poll's value is discounted by donna frabotta neither john karakash dean of the college of engineering nor albert zet tlemoyer vice-president and provost expressed concern over the absence of the university from a recent listing of the top five engineering schools in the united states the poll conducted by professor peter blau and graduate student rebecca margulies of columbia university and originally published in change magazine appeared in the dec 30,1974 issue of time magazine the schools named for engineering were massachusetts institute of technology mit the university of illinois and stanford university tied for second the university of california at berkley and california institute of technology according to karakash being on a list doesn't mean anything schools are in the business of educating people he said adding that it is what a school can do for itself that counts he also said the university cannot be compared to a school like mit because mlt's department of engineering is larger than the university's college of engineering zettlemoyer said he wouldn't get ex cited about the university's absence from the list ratings are questionable he said and often behind the times a department may be rated very highly one year and may lose some of the men who see poll's page 4 see university page 4 see forum page 4 see ambulance page 4
