evolve said university president w deming lewis at a waterhole series lecture on wednesday lewis gave his perspective on what lehigh education is all about the primary goal of education is to prepare and encourage people to live successful and happy lives in order that they may influence others in society to do the same lewis said viewed in this way education still has a way to go before we can say it is per fectly successful he said the principle goal of the university is to provide an education at a higher formal level lewis said secondarily the university education must be used to aid society directly by the application of the knowledge it provides and through un derstanding he added lewis referred to graduation as a desirable objective but said that technical and financial practices change from decade to decade he asked what good mastery of a field would be in 10 years accordingly board fundamental principles must be taught as they do not change to readily lewis said the education of students in only the im mediately-marketable skills would produce graduates who are only technicians lewis said that as no faculty ha foresight of future areas of knowledge the university education must teach the ability to learn and understand new ideas and theories as they evolve learning must be regarded as an active par ticipatory practice rather than a passive process he said no man however expert he is professionally is an island lewis said adding that he must interact successfully with others around him this means the university must expose him to academic asking for a review of university financial priorities before construction of the arena is started according to eric ottervik vice-president for planning ottervik speaking at a meeting of the forum administration committee tuesday said it would make more sense for the forum to participate in a review of the priorities of the second half of the university's new century fund than to attempt to review the priorities of the nearly completed first phase the athletic and convocation center ( acc is one of the few remaining goals of the first phase of the university's new century fund a 10-year development campaign the center includes a field house now being constructed and an arean the building of which was postponed in october due to lack of funds ottervik said that a review of the priorities of the first phase is not tenable now becuase it is really too late to turn back about 40 per cent of the cost of the arena has been raised in restricted funds because the money has been
