writer will speak m grace hall on may 2 at 8:30 p.m the speech is being jointly sponsored by the visiting lecturers committee and the university's school of education mead received her b.a m 1923 from barnard college one year later she received her m.a from columbia university and m 1929 her ph.d also from columbia honored many times for her work mead holds 20 honorary doctorates including an honorary doctor of science awarded hy harvard university m 1973 among her many prizes and awards are the american museum of natural history gold medal 1969 the arches of science award of the pacific science center foundation of seattle 1971 the gimbel national award the joseph priestly award of dickenson college carlisle pa ; the award for excellence of columbia university's graduate faculties alumni and the kalinga . prizes for the popularization of science awarded by unesco and the government of india mead began her career at the american museum of natural history m 1926 as assistant curator of ethnology m the an thropology department in 1942 mead was named associate curator and m 1964 she was appointed curator she is currently curator emeritus of ethnology for several years mead was engrossed m the creation and installation of the hall of peoples of the pacific at the museum which opened to the public m the spring of 1971 as it does for most of her work mead's office and staff at the museum served as the center for this project mead began her field work m the pacific m 1925 when as a fellow of the national - research council she made a study of samoan adolescents this research lead to her first book coming of age m samoa 1928 in 1928-29 as a fellow of the social science research council mead studied the children of manus one of the ad miralty islands in 1930 she did research with an american indian group during 1931-33 mead studied the relationship between sex and temperament among the arapesh mundugumor and tchambuli peoples of new guinea which resulted m her book sex and temperament m three primitive societies 1935 mead furthered her work m the ad miralty islands through visits m 1953 1964 1965 1971 and m 1973 when she made a film as a result of her lifetime studies of the peoples of the pacific she has mastered seven languages of the area mead's field work and research into both western and non-western societies have resulted m an enormous amount of writing which includes 20 books she has authored and another 15 she has either co authored or co-edited she has also written innumerable scientific papers monographs journal articles and popular articles including a regular column m redbook magazine mead has also written and narrated various films in recent years mead has studied contemporary western culture m the light of knowledge gained during her field work lewis report supported construction of acc in 72 by rob feldman • — fourth m a series — many persons realized that the forum's rejection of the athletic and convocation crater proposal by a vote of 43-39 was not the end of the acc controversy first it was well-known that president w deming lewis had the privilege of presenting a report of his own views to the trustees m the hope that he might in fluence them towards his own line of thinking second the board of trustees had the prerogative of overturning any decision made by the forum even though it would be a rare move in actuality a motion passed by the forum is not the final word it is merely a suggestion to the board of trustees which is where the real decision-making power lies third it was the prevailing feeling on campus that the trustees were keenly interested m the athletic development of the university because of its value as a selling point for the school so when the board of trustees reversed the forum motion at its meeting of january 1972 it wasn't a great surprise even thoigh it was the first time the trustees had overturned a forum motion the trustee's decision was largely the result of a report submitted to them by lewis which presented arguments m favor of the majority report of the forum's priorities planning and resources committee the lewis report as it came to be known showed lehigh to be rated favorably m faculty salaries and financial aid m comparison with other schools of the same size but seriously lacking m athletic facilities the schools to which lehigh was campared m the lewis report included several private pennsylvania colleges such as haverford lafayette and car negie-mellon the report indicated that the minority plan which the forum preferred would leave too little money m unrestricted funds for construction because of its concentration on endowment and library expenditures lewis listed the advantages of the majority plan as having better fund raising potential a greater adequacy for special events theater productions and athletics and greater value to the city furthermore the i_ewis report pointed out that the creative arts center a 4.5 million project which was part of the original 10-year plan of building priorities for the university would be difficult to subsidize based on conversations with lehigh's traditional large donors the pendleton committee had main tained that the arts center would have little drawing appeal because it was thought that it would serve too narrow a purpose at too great an expense but the lewis report said that an all-university under construction the field house of the athletic and convocation center is under construction m saucon valley the complex was the subject of heated debate ex-policeman gori requests list of charges by peter li a user the university has not yet responded m writing to a request for a list of charges regarding the jan 30 dismissal of campus policeman joseph gori according to chester a reybitz the attorney who is representing gori university personnel director robert evans refused to make a statement concerning gori until he knows something positive and has had a chance to review the matter further he said the 38-year-old policeman was discharged following a university in vestigation into an allegedly illegal en trance into kappa sigma fraternity during winter vacation campus police captain eugene dax said on feb 4 that the firing resulted from gori's failure to complete the required police report after entering the fraternity and for failure to perform his duty satisfactorily in addition according to dax campus new approach to gays is possible says flesher by donna frabotta the university is open to a new ap proach on the issue of a university group for homosexuals according to hugh flesher university chaplain if the situation is approached with equanimity and not sensationalism the administration won't clamp down flesher said flesher said he would help start a group if a clear existence of students who want such an organization is demonstrated a gay group called the homophile society existed three years ago on the university campus according to flesher the group was underground but was permitted to notify students of its existence by putting letters m the mail boxes flesher said people who were interested m joining the group contacted the chaplain's office and their names were passed on to groups leaders he explained fearing flak from the administration more than 30 faculty members volun teered to speak up for the existence of the group flesher said but the flak never came although there was a general kind of guffawing and prank playing on the part of students flesher said the homophile society disappeared because the leadership graduated and no new leadership has come up flesher said flesher said a gay group on campus raises consciousness a gay organization gives straights a chance to meet people who are gay and find out that they are human and not freaks he said educated people ought not to settle for dealing with stereotypes education if it has any virtue must go beyond that an
