dutch diplomat to be speaker seniors fail to sign cards three categories of seniors are presenting reasons why it is ne cessary for them to fill out senior record cards or to have their pho tos taken for the placement bureau records these men are those in ad vanced r o t c who think their being called into active service is imminent students expecting to take graduate work and students who have already made employ ment commitments e robins morgan director of the placement service says we are offering each senior something to which he is entitled but of which he fails to see the value advanced r o t c students should take interviews with the companies which are interested in seeing them these interviews may result in employment after the war interviews will start nov 1 such interviews will start on nov 1 but cannot be granted to any student who has not submit ted the proper records to the placement office morgan urges that all seniors fill in the record cards at once and requirements and point list general rules 1 character shall be the primary require ment for membership in this fraternity members of the class of 1944 must have a scholastic average for the preceding five semesters equal to or better than the un dergraduate university average in the sem ester previous to the application members of the class of 1943 and of following classes must rank in the highest thirty-five percent in scholarship in their college no person shall be eligible for active mem bership until he has been in residence at lehigh university at least one year all applicants will ordinarily submit their scho lastic average for five semesters applicants who have fulfilled the residence requirement but have not completed five semesters at lehigh must have junior standing and their scholastic average must meet the required standard 2 the membership in the circle shall in clude 15 or more undergraduate men three to be elected in february of each year from the junior class eight to be elected in may of each year from the junior class and four to be elected in september of each year from the senior class this number does not include any men who were active members during the previous year and are returning for a fifth year 3 subject to the provisions of paragraph 1 the election will be based on the point system i.e those men in college who have earned the highest school miss skinner is generally con sidered by drama critics to be the leading monologist in america she has also achieved a high rep utation as a playwright and pro ducer besides being a well-known actress on the legitimate stage her original monologues have been ac claimed throughout the country as a uniuqe attraction and were well received at lehigh a few seasons ago the second concert of the series will be a presentation of mozart's popular opera the marriage of figaro by the philadelphia opera company nov 16 presents own variations sascha gorodnitzki will present a piano recital dec 4 for the past decade he has been a leading artist at the piano and plays his own variations of well-known works the fourth concert will be given by anne brown march 12 the negro singer has recently been ac claimed for her performance in the revival of gershwin's porgy and bess the final attraction on the pres ent program will be john brown lee a baritone with the metro politan opera company april 12 single tickets used these student concerts-lectures are mainly supported by the one dollar fee paid each semester at registration season tickets to fac ulty and townspeople and general admission ticket sales also make the program possible instead of the regular athletic book a single ticket will be issued at tht athletic office upon presentation of the bur sar's receipt this ticket contains letters to be punched for s c l events and numbers for athletic events fewer men take rotc since many freshmen and soph omores are enrolled in the navy v-l program and are not required to take military training lehigh's rotc unit will be smaller than last year's the unit is composed of 266 juniors and seniors taking the advanced course while 742 un derclassmen are taking the basic phi changing status of erc students is clarified by statement from dean however my statement . . . has been interpreted in some quar ters to mean the end of all higher education for the duration of the war this is a misapprehension . . . need trained men the army is greatly in need of men of specialized training par continued on page 5 last week i announced that college students who are members of the army enlisted reserve will all or for the most part be called to active duty at the end of the term now beginning and thereafter as they reach selective service age this action has been foreseen as a possibility and in every presentation of the enlisted reserve plan to college students and college authorities it was clearly stated that enlisted reservists were subject to call at any time when in the opinion of the secretary of war the exigencies of war de manded it new change explained quotations from a statement by secretary of war henry l stimson follow conferences with the navy department according to dean congdon's statement warrant the declaration regarding the navy marine corps and coast guard collegiate training program that although there are no significant changes in the . . . program from the conditions set forth . . . previously ..." the emergency condition may arise which would necessitate the immediate call to active duty and immediate detachment from college training pro gram for duty ashore or afloat "... it is probable states the dean that enlisted reserve plans of the army and navy will continue to be slightly different not be cause of the basic difference in policy or values but because of the inevitable consequences of war the status of college students enrolled in the army enlisted re serve corps and the navy collegiate training program is made somewhat clearer by a compilation by dean wray h congdon of recent washington announcements concerning the calling of such reservists to active duty lehigh university brown & white price — 5 cents bethlehem pa friday september 25 1942 vol l — no 2 plan mass recruit day service men to talk on armed branches m-day at lehigh will mean mass recruiting day when on oct 19 a joint army-navy-mar ine-coast guard college procure ment committee holds forth on the campus under this joint plan for recruit ing reserve men it was agreed that such a board would visit each col lege campus about once a semester instead of interfering intermittent ly with college programs by sched uling random visits by various mil itary groups at the time of the committee's visit each branch of the service will first present its case in a fif teen minute talk at a general col lege assembly the services to be represented are army various branches army air corps navy v-l v-7 coast guard etc naval aviation marine corps following these presentations will be a 30-minute open forum for questions will return to recruit this all-university meeting will be held probably in the morning in the afternoon and evening rep resentatives of each service will have separate conference rooms to which students can go for further information and conference the representatives will then leave the campus without having done any actual recruiting about one week later each service will send a recruiting team and exam ining board to the campus to test pass upon and enlist students who wish to enlist and can meet quali fications students who are not in imme diate danger of being taken out of college by the draft will prob ably do well to defer enlisting un til they have heard the joint pro curement committee's presenta tions unless they have already in vestigated the various opportuni ties and have made up their minds applicants to see dean any applicants for the army enlisted reserve corps who are doubtful about going through with this enlistment until they have heard the oct 19 program should report to the office of the dean of undergraduates promptly and have their applications principal speaker at the founder's day ceremonies to be held in packer chapel at 10:30 a.m on wednesday oct 7 will be his excellency dr alexander laudon ambassador from the netherlands dr a laudon to deliver founder's day address see the art exhibit at the library a university advantage that not enough lehigh students take time to enjoy is the art gallery in the library starting this sun day and continuing until oct 11 the gallery will feature the fall exhibition of the lehigh valley art alliance a showing of the re cent works of about 60 artists from bethlehem and vicinity portraits and landscapes — done in pastels water colors and pencil — as well as some ceramics work will be on display this sunday most of the artists will be at the gallery in person a novel feature of the program this sunday will be that the names of the artists will be concealed so that it may be seen whether or not their works may be recognized from resemblance to former ex hibits the gallery is open from 2 to 5 every tuesday thursday fri day and sunday
