to go through the university at different paces and finish his program in as many years as he feels he needs said john hunt dean of the college of arts and sciences at wednesday's educational policy com mittee meeting other topics presented for future con sideration concerned a change in graduation requirements the academic problems of students who participate in intercollegiate athletics and must spend excessive time away from classes providing the option of plus or minus grades in addition to straight letter grades and including in the catalog the semesters when a course is usually of fered subcommittees were appointed to look into these topics hunt said we're getting much more sensitive in our advisory programs and it is possible to give the students this ser vice he said that students pacing themselves would tend toward ac celeration rather than deceleration joseph mcfadden chairman of the committee and professor of journalism pointed out that if a student delays his education it may take up space for a student who would be coming to lehigh richard roberts associate professor of mechanical engineering said the com mittee should examine whether a student should be able to take an exam to prove that he is proficient enough in a particular academic field to graduate without having taken the full amount of credits required for graduation . in other business john karakasri dean of the college of engineering said that one possible solution to the increasing problems with the 4 p.m quiz schedule would be to schedule two saturdays each semester for the quizzes this would relieve some of the conflicts he said hunt proposed that the committee on standing of students keep a record of changes made in distribution requirements for individual students who have petitioned brian brockway dean of the college of business and economics suggested a dean john hunt human relations panel keeps 97 probe secret by debby cawthon the human relations committee's investigation of the marching 97 will not be made public until the probe's conclusion according to nathan w harris assistant dean of student life and chairman of the committee during an investigation of alleged charges of discrimination or the proceedings of an investigation no public statements will be made by the committee regarding proceedings nor will they be open to the public harris said the committee held an organizational meeting tuesday which was closed to the brown and white for part of the time william quay requested late wednesday afternoon that the human relations committee hrc investigate women's membership in the university band harris said a request to investigate the band was needed before the committee could begin and added that the committee will convene as soon as possible to begin its investigation hrc is a university committee which serves as an investigative body in matters of alleged discrimination there are eight members on the committee two were elected by president lewis two were elected by the faculty and four were elected by the forum harris and stephanie stys 75 are presidential appointments mrs berry richards secretary to the faculty and leon n hicks assistant professor of fine arts are the faculty representatives jeff schoff , 76 vincent munley 73 ed fiedler 76 and bruce ballard 75 were elected by the forum any student who feels he is being denied participation in any university sponsored club or organization should file a complaint with the committee harris said larry miller discrimination inquiry requested in quay letter an investigation by the human relations committee of alleged discrimination on the basis of sex in the lehigh marching 97 has been requested by william quay dean of student life in a letter to nathan harris assistant dean of student life and chairman of hrc the committee needed a request for a probe into the situation before it could begin its investigative proceedings and quay's request was the first received quay's letter reads as you doubtless know the controversy regarding women in the marching band continues to occupy a prominent place in the brown and white as i indicated in a letter to the newspaper earlier this semester i have no way to judge the veracity of the facts as they have been reported to the brown and white about one thing i am sure an objective analysis of this situation must be made in order to be fair to the women the band the forum and the whole lehigh com munity therefore i am requesting the human relations committee to investigate the question of women membership in the lehigh marching 97 i am convinced that only through rational means viz a fair evaluation by your committee will we solve a vexing problem which has been brewing far too long copies of the letter were sent to band manager andy shmerler 74 and james brown assistant professor of music d.a defends fishkin probe from blast by mark linder i don't pay any attention to stroh meyer said northampton county dist atty charles spaziani in response to an editorial in the bethlehem globe-times of sept 19 the editorial charged that there had been a cover-up in the investigation of mitch fishkin's death the fraternity brothers didn't cause the boy's death spaziani said we know what the facts are we learned them in detail and there is no criminal respon sibility involved spaziani continued just because somebody dies doesn't mean somebody else has to be punished you can't blame people if there's no reason to blame them editor-in-chief john strohmeyer wrote in the editorial that an attempt to cover tracks was the first thing on the minds of many he called the death of delta phi pledge mitch fishkin a tragic and deplorable example of irresponsibility on campus saying that there was no way to excuse the indifference of fishkin's so-called six u students are arrested on drug charge six university students were arrested tuesday night on charges of possession of controlled substances the bethlehem police department reported the students were walter wilczynski 74 ronald svetz 74 charles wolfe 74 peter taubman 74 george young 75 and robert park~er 74 a northampton county community college coed was also arrested the students were arrested at young's residence 307 west st bethlehem at approximately 10 p.m wolfe and wilc zynski would not comment the others involved could not be reached gryphon society policy has undergone change by joseph tartaglia attempting to increase its effectiveness the gryphon society has undergone significant revisions in policy according to larry miller 74 president of the society miller said there has been much concern about ineffectiveness of some gryphon counselors who have been consistently unavailable because of academic or personal problems he said they have been unable to give proper counseling to students in their sections before this year's revisions in gryphon society policy miller said even those gryphons who might not have been doing their job properly would almost always be able to renew their contracts as many times as they wanted miller said that a gryphon no longer has this security at the end of the year the house coordinator and clarence b campbell dean of residence will review the effectiveness of each counselor advise him and if necessary refuse to renew his contract miller emphasized the change in the role of the gryphon house coordinator before the change in the society's policy the house coordinator was just an overseer miller said the coordinator's main function in the past was to make sure things ran smoothly throughout the house his new function is to give the gryphons advice and aid them in doing their job if a gryphon is not devoting proper at tention to his section the house coor dinator
