for a special meeting to amend next year's calendar was sub mitted friday by forum members mike maskaleris 75 and roy taylor 75 the petition received the 10 signatures required to call a special meeting the amendments include starting classes several days earlier in both the fall and spring semesters and either deleting the yom kippur holiday or cancelling classes the next day thereby creating a four-day weekend taylor said he is very much in favor of starting the spring semester jan 20 in stead of jan 23 which would allow a four day weekend in february he noted that this ch ige would alleviate the strain of eight straight weeks of classes neither taylor nor maskaleris would speculate on the chances of obtaining the necessary quorum of 30 per cent of the forum members at the meeting taylor said however that i'm going to try very hard to make people understand why 4t is worthwhile to come to the meeting maskaleris added that he felt that the amendments had a fairly good chance of passing if the quorum could be obtained senior gift campaign begins nov 5 harry r gustafson of phi sigma kappa president of the senior class says it is the duty of the seniors to contribute to the class gift campaign the 1974 campaign begins nov 5 with a kick-off dinner at the hotel bethlehem and runs through nov 19 since lehigh's already high tuition covers only 60 per cent of the actual in dividual college cost the other 40 per cent depends upon donations and endowments gustafson said it is up to the seniors to make sure that the university can stay a private institution and maintain the high standards for which it is well known the present pledge to the class gift campaign is 20 per year for a 20-year period when the campaign began in 1938 the pledge was 12 per year for 20 years until 1960 the money was accumulated and put into insurance policies where it earned only one per cent interest since 1961 the money has been invested in mutual funds where it earns 8 per cent interest this year the class of 1954 will talk to the present seniors to find out the current needs of the university the class of 1954 will vote on the use of the money at their 20th reunion the class of 1974 will use their money in 1994 if the desired response of 60-80 per cent is achieved the matured gift in 1994 monetary loss on hark is greater than expected ~_ by eileen canzian about half which was not over by the production's 8:30 p.m starting time because it was upperclassmen parents weekend snyder said it was also presumed that there wouldn't be any fraternity parties friday evening
